Description
A .25 in. Offset Duplex Color Brochurewith a contour cutout along the top and right edges.
ObjectivesSet up, align, and print a color, full bleed, duplex, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure and incorporate at least four
quality images. One image should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped.
Write at least 250 words of original copy with
at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
ProcessAfter conceiving the concept of a karate student brochure,
I decided to designt the logo rst. After some sketches, I took my
design to Illustrator and created the full color logo.
With a color scheme, fonts, and layout decided, I gathered the images I needed.
To complete my design, I needed to create a silhouette and an illustration of the boy
in the kicking pose. This took some time, patience, and skill with the pen tool in
Illustrator. Finally, once printed, I used an X-ACTO knife to acheive a precise trim.

A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiserusing only Microsoft Word and a scanner.
ObjectivesFind, scan and import a high-quality image and
resize in Photoshop to comprehend image sizing.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using
any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.
ProcessI used a scanner to scan in an image from a magazine, and Photoshop only for
resizing the image by adjusting the ppi. I used Microsoft Word 2010 to import,
place and size the image, as well as adding text, logos, and shapes. To create a
color scheme, I had to open the image in a browser (Chrome) and use an extension
to get hex values for the colors I wanted. Then I used RGBtoHex.net to convert the
hex values to RGB to input into Words color picker. To complete the tetradic color
scheme, I picked a green that worked well with the yellow, purple, and red.

Design 3 logos for the same company, then rene the best of those logos andrepresent it in full color, grayscale, and all-white on color.
ObjectivesUse only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.
Market research: gather opinions from at least
ten people about which logo appeals most to them.
Rene one logo with variations for color.
ProcessFor the nal logo, I simply drew a circle, then used the Alt+click+drag method
twice to copy 2 more circles exactly the same size. I aligned them with the vertical
alignment tool, and overlapped them evenly with the distribute horizontally tool.
Then I used the Pathnder divide tool and the Shape Builder tool to create my full
circle and two crescent shapes and moved them away from each other slightly. I
applied a monochromatic color scheme initially, but settled on a complimentary
scheme for my nal design. Using guides and tracking, I aligned my text.

Create a logo and use it to design a business card.
ObjectivesCreate a new logo to t a company or personal image.
Design a layout for a business card. Business card should be 3.5 x 2.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and
drop shadows and plenty of white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email.
Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/hyphens.
ProcessIn Illustrator, I began with the gear image. Using 3 concentric circles, the star
polygon tool, and the shape builder, I was able to make a decent looking gear. Then I
used the pen tool to make the mouse, using the Direct Select tool afterward to make
minor adjustments. The watch hand was added afterward when I felt like something
was still missing. Again in Illustrator, I created a new le for my logotype. I found
Century Gothic, a font whos W was a near mirror-image of the M, and used it to
create the continuous MW mark adding the rest of each word in a contrasting color.

Create a logo and use it to design a letterhead.
ObjectivesCreate a new logo to t a company or personal image.
Use the new logo to design a layout for a letterhead.
Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy. Keep designs simple with light
watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each
piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/hyphens.
ProcessOnce I had the logo design, placing the elements was an experiment in balance.
With the logo and logotype having such a strong presence in the upper left,
I felt like adding a watermark that bled of the right edge would provide some
asymmetrical balance. Placing the text was just a natural progression from there.

Create a montage with 2 or more images to portray a spiritual message.
ObjectivesLearn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks.
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements.
Use a mask to apply a lter to one part of the image.
Apply typography principles and select good quality images.
ProcessI started with the message. Once I found a quote that inspired an image in my mind. From there I searched out images that could combine to portray that mental image.
Once I had the images, I used Photoshop to trim, place, and blend the images.
Input masks were vital to this process, additionally I used a Motion Blur on the
reection of the stars on the ocean (a vertically ipped copy of the space image)
that when combined with a reduced opacity, created the illusion of the night sky
reecting on the water.

Create a design that includes an original photograph, a color scheme from thephotograph, and some text and design elements.
ObjectivesLearn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo, then
incorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digital camera to take
a quality image to match those colors, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, and sharpen
tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing).
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.
ProcessIn meeting the objective, I was inpired to get a good photo of the local historic
theater and combine it with a quote from The Majestic. An important lesson I
learned is to get the best light possible when taking the photo because only so
much can be done in Photoshop before the image starts to lose its authenticity.

A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.
ObjectivesSize & optimize an original logo (.png) for a web page so the long side is 300500px.
Write content to describe the creation process and appeal of your logo.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML.Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.
Customize the CSS provided to format the HTML to complement the logo design.
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a
quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for printing.
ProcessFirst, I created just the html page with sample content to make sure the content
and its containing html elements were in the proper order. Next, I used the provided
css le to apply styles to my page. I edited those styles and used the eyedropper tool
built in to Chromes developer tool to pick the proper hex codes from my logo.
I used Times New Roman for my headings and Arial for my body copy,
as to mimic the serif and sans-serif fonts in my logo.

Description
Use provided copy, image, and logo to produce a compelling and attractive ier.
ObjectivesApply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic
InDesign skills to improve basic ier layout. Retrieve image and logo from
provided links. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document
to keep links in InDesign intact.
ProcessFirst I reviewed the copy that was provided and
some of the past ier examples, then I set out to sketch. (Formulate a plan)
After sketching several options, I took my best sketch into Adobe InDesign
and got the general layout in place. (Organize the content)
I then chose two different fonts, and picked the image,
logo, and shade of gray I would use. (Contrast the elements)
By placing items nearer to each other and changing the leading between some of the
text, I was able to clarify which items belonged together (Unify the parts)
Finally, after receiving feedback from my wife, a fellow student, and my instructor, I
made some minor changes that helped clarify my piece. (Simplify the message)
