Design by testing works by having several design options
Design Options A, B and C
Where:
Option A is based upon standard construction details and is therefore known to work. Option A provides zero cost benefits since it contains typical construction tolerances
Option B is based upon reducing tolerance levels, and hence providing some cost savings
Option C is mathematically proven to work but has zero or little level of tolerance, this option provides good cost savings

The construction team must fully buy into the Design by Testing Concept.
All three options must be build able.
Procurement times must be considered for all three options.
Early on site testing must be carried out to ensure which design option is to be taken forwards.

Regulation E1 – Impact Isolation – MACH Acoustics proposed to use carpets as the resilient floor finish.
Regulation E1 - Party walls to corridor spaces - MACH Acoustics proposed to remove the need for high spec walls to corridors.
Regulation E1 – Doors – MACH Acoustics proposed to reduce the performance of doors from 29 dB acoustic doors to 28 dB.
Regulation E3 – MACH Acoustics used the performance standards given in BB93 ‘Acoustic Design for Schools’ to reduce the levels of treatment in circulation spaces.

B2.13 Impact sound insulation tests should be conducted on a floor without a soft covering (e.g. carpet, foam backed vinyl etc) except in the case of (a) separating floor type 1, as described in this Approved Document, or (b) a concrete structural floor base which has a soft covering as an integral part of the floor.

Regulation E3 – states that soft treatments are required within common circulation spaces.
Approved Document E does not provide specific performance standards, it is therefore seen appropriate to use performance standards given within BB93.

ADE requires a reasonable level of sound insulation between living spaces and circulation spaces,
ADE advises that the sound insulation of the door achieves 29 dB Rw. MACH Acoustics propose to use 28 dB Rw doors.
