Sugars and Terpenes Phase 3

Chapter VI Final Question Set2.10 The units were wrong in the passage itself.

2.11Sucrose has lost a water molecule, so CO2 would make up a bigger percentage of sucrose, so it can give more CO2 per gram.

2.13You should have figured out the kJ per gram here.

3.16Oxidation does NOT occur when you switch N to O for example, at least in organic chemistry.

4.27A meso compound is one with a mirror plane that will NOT be optically active. Therefore, C should have been the right choice because it is NOT a meso compound, so the reason that they say it is “optically inactive” is incorrect.

Terpenes2.10It is true that isoprene is derived from 3 acetyl-CoA molecules.

2.11Terpenes are lipids.

2.13A terpene in number has 10 carbons. Nerol and citralal have the same connectivity of terpenes.

3.17Careless mistake when evaluating arachidonic acid. CO2H is the same thing as COOH.

6.41The intermediate will be a cyclohexene because the double bond relocates and then it will bond to the larger reactant.

6.42The role of MeLi is to add Me to the reactant. Because Me is going to be negatively charged, it must act as a nucleophile. Therefore, the answer is B.

6.43For conjugated dienes, H+ always adds at the ends of the conjugated diene. Therefore, the answer to this question would be A, since it is less sterically hindered than D.
