PASTORS COLUMN
Dear Friends in Christ,
The photo above of Pope Francis was taken on the Vigil of Pentecost Sunday just prior to his address to an audience of about 200,000 people in St. Peters Square. His passionate half-hour plus talk included his personal tes mony, a gentle fraternal cri cism to the crowd, and a manifesto to the Church. He observed that the crowd gets so keyed up when the pope-mobile comes out and they chant his name Pope Francis or “Francesco” but he asked them to chant instead the name of “Jesus.” He lovingly spoke of how we human beings are weak when we come to the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament in prayer, o en falling off to sleep, but we must seek the strength that comes from prayer. We need this to become the missionary Church God calls us to be. The pope encourages us to be an open church, one that goes out in this era of the New Evangeliza on and not become closed in on ourselves or get stagnant in our faith. As we engage in an intensive me of prayer during our 40 hours of adora on this weekend, please remember to pray for the modern day martyrs about which Pope Fran-cis speaks. Please also pray for an increase of voca ons to the priesthood and religious life. Pray that our parish will be united in Faith, Hope and Love in the service of our LORD. We pray in a special way this weekend for those who will be taking on the role of extraordinary minister of the Eucharist. They will be receiving a special blessing at the 10:30am Mass this weekend. Some of our EMs will be exercising their ministry at the Spanish Masses. The seminarian that has been assigned to come to our parish this summer is delayed in his arrival due to an intensive language program at the Spanish Academy Sevilla in An gua Guate-mala from June 3rd un l July 12th because as Archbishop McCarthy used to say…a priest that speaks two languages is like having two priests. Jackson Reeves will be with us at St. Clement from July 15th un l July 28th to complete his summer field educa on. I’ll give you more informa on about Jackson as the date for his arrival draws near, in the meanwhile, keep him in your pray-ers. Although we already had our formal farewell for Msgr. Cesar Pe lla two weeks ago, I cannot let this opportunity pass to again wish him well as this is his final weekend with us. Bon voyage Father, enjoy your vaca on, return to the Bay area safely and don’t forget to visit. The plans are ge ng underway for a farewell party for Fr. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament In honor of the Solemnity of Corpus Chris
Friday, May 31st-Sunday, June 2nd This celebra on will begin Friday, May 31st at 9:00pm in the Chap-el. We will process with the Blessed Sacrament to Cronin Hall. The stage side of Cronin Hall will be open all day and night for ad-ora on from Friday un l Sunday. On Sunday, June 2nd at 1:00pm, we will process with the Blessed Sacrament from the hall back to the Church where we will have Benedic on to conclude our celebra on of Corpus Chris . Please take me to sign up to spend some me with the Lord, al-lowing Him to “feed” you with His love. There must always be at least 2 (unrelated) people present at all me during adora on. Queridos amigos en Cristo,
La foto del Papa Francisco fue tomada en la Vigilia de Domingo de Pentecostés justo antes de su dis-curso ante una audiencia de cerca de 200,000 personas en la Plaza de San Pedro. Su apasionado discurso de media hora incluyo su tes monio personal, una suave crí ca fraterna a la mul tud, y un manifiesto a la Iglesia. Observó como la gente se pone tan exci-tada cuando el Papa-móvil sale y gritan su nombre Papa Francisco o "Francesco", pero les pidió que griten en lugar del nombre de "Jesús". Él amo-rosamente habló de cómo los seres humanos somos débiles cuando llegamos al Señor en el San simo Sacramento en la oración, a menudo cayendo en sue-ño, pero debemos buscar la fuerza que viene de la oración. Necesitamos esto para ser la Iglesia misionera que Dios nos llama a ser. El Papa nos anima a ser una iglesia abierta que sale en esta era de la Nueva Evangelización y que no nos cerremos en nosotros mismos y que se quede estancada en nuestra fe. empo intenso de oración durante nuestras 40 horas de adoración este fin de semana, por favor recuerde orar por los már res de hoy en día sobre los que hablo el Papa Francisco. Por favor también recen por un aumento en las voca-ciones a la vida sacerdotal y religiosa. Oremos por nuestra parroquia para que se unidad fe, esperanza y amor en servicio a nuestro Señor. Oramos de una manera especial este fin de semana por los que va a tomar el papel de ministro extraordinario de la Eucaris a. Ellos recibirán una bendición especial en la Misa de las 10:30 am este fin de semana. Algunos de nuestros Ministros Extraordinarios de la Eucaris a ejercerán de su ministerio en las misas en español. El seminarista que ha sido asignado a nuestra parro-quia este verano a retrasó su llegada debido a un programa intensivo de idio-ma en la Academia Española de Sevilla en An gua, Guatemala del 3 de junio hasta el 12 de julio, como el Arzobispo McCarthy solía decir ... un sacerdote que habla dos idiomas es como tener dos sacerdotes. Jackson Reeves estará con nosotros en San Clemente del 15 de julio hasta el 28 de julio para comple-tar sus estudios de verano. Les daré más información acerca de Jackson con-forme se acerque la fecha de su llegada, mientras tanto manténganlo en sus oraciones. Aunque ya tuvimos nuestra despedida formal de Monseñor Cesar Pe lla hace dos semanas, no puedo dejar pasar esta oportunidad para desear-le lo mejor ya que este es su úl mo fin de semana con nosotros. Bon voyage Padre, disfrute de sus vacaciones, regrese pronto y no se olvide visitarnos. Los planes se están llevando a cabo para una fiesta de despedida para el Padre Rafael Martos en tres semanas, el 23 de junio de 2013.

APRECIAR LA EUCARISTÍA Durante siglos, la fiesta que hoy celebramos se llamó Corpus Chris (Cuerpo de Cristo) y se conmemoraba el jueves siguiente al Domingo de la San si-ma Trinidad. En muchos países ha sido movida al domingo siguiente, para que más personas puedan par cipar de esta celebración. Hoy en día, la liturgia de esta fies-ta concentra nuestra atención en el significado de la Eucaris a, que tantas veces recibimos. La lectura de hoy del Génesis nos dice cómo “Melquisedec, rey de Sa-lem, presentó pan y vino” y bendijo a Abram. Aunque esto tuvo lugar casi dos mil años antes de Cristo, este momento ha sido usado siempre por la Iglesia como un anuncio de la Eucaris a. La lectura de la carta de Pablo a los corin os es la misma que se procla-ma el Jueves Santo, volviéndonos a contar la historia de la primera bendición y distribución del pan y el vino en la Úl ma Cena. La historia de Lucas sobre la mul-
plicación milagrosa de los panes y los peces para alimentar a una mul tud en el Evangelio de hoy es una clara alusión a la Eucaris a. Por tanto, las tres lecturas de hoy nos brindan la oportunidad de profundizar nuestro aprecio por el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
