A Letter From the Artistic DirectorRogue Machine was created ten years ago. I answered an ad –Writer looking for a Director. I didn’t know the writer and I had little hope I would like the piece. I did. The writer was John Pollono, the play was his first full length play, Lost and Found, the World Premiere of which was produced at The Lounge Theatre in 2006.

Intimate theatre has changed since then. In those days when I shopped World Premieres to existing theatres, I was told no one came to World Premieres. There were also a lot of funny, dark, poetic, and often disturbing plays coming out of England, Chicago and New York that no one was producing here. There were new playwrights that needed to be heard. There still are. My colleagues and I began talking about creating yet another theatre in Los Angeles. We all thought there were enough theatres here already, but there was work that we thought Los Angeles should know and no one was doing it.

Welcome to the third play of Rogue Machine’s ninth season. In the last nine years we have won every major award in Los Angeles multiple times and almost all of our productions are Critics’ Choices. We have sent five plays on to larger theatres including Off-Broadway productions, Baltimore Center Stage, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and now the Donmar Warehouse in London. We have won The American Theatre Wing’s National Theatre Award, a Shubert grant and been selected for Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Arts Innovation and Management two-year program.

Theatre is a community, a family, and you, the audience, are an important part of the family. We are grateful for your support and loyalty. We are a non-profit charitable institution and our Board of Directors is also very important to us. They are our representatives in the greater Los Angeles community – our champions and our conscience. In the next few months we will be seeking some new Board members. If you or someone you know is a good candidate for the Board please reach out to us. We’d love to talk to you about what Board members do and answer any questions you might have.

Tonight you are seeing Greg Keller’s Dutch Masters. We chose this play because it evokes the devastation of the politics of race in America in an intimate, very personal way. These are real people and as their story unfolds, it’s funny, then frightening and then heartbreaking. What’s most alarming is how timely this piece is, how little has changed since 1992.

We’ll end this season with two World Premieres. The first is Tom Jacobson’s Captain of the Bible Quiz Team which we will be presenting in local churches throughout Los Angeles. Tom’s play is an immersive experience – a tragicomedy delivered in seven sermons with jello. Our last production of the season opens in early November – The Super Variety Match Bonus Round! by Deb Hiett, a playwright with a unique voice and a hilarious vision of how a game show can cure what’s right and wrong with America. Please remember, if you like what you see, the best thing you can do for us is share your enthusiasm with a friend. Word of mouth will always be the best advertising.

– John Flynn

Rogue Machine Proudly AnnouncesThe Henry Murray Fund

The Henry Murray Fund was created to honor our dear friend and Rogue Machine Theatre founding member Henry Murray, who passed away in December 2014. Henry was a talented playwright and gifted dramaturg. Rogue Machine produced three World Premieres by Henry including Treefall and Three Views of the Same Object, both of which have had significant subsequent productions. Henry was Rogue Machine’s first Literary Manager and he created the Dramaturg’s Table, Rogue Machine’s ongoing new play development program. The Henry Murray Fund was created to nurture and support playwrights and new play development, two things Henry cared about deeply. If you wish to support this mission, we invite you to make a tax-deductible contribution to the Fund today.

Darkness in December a joint message to the Los Angeles Community from Pro99 and the plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Equity

Beginning December 14th, 2016, despite the Los Angeles Community’s urging and a lawsuit served on Actors’ Equity Association by Equity members and producers, Equity will impose new rules and regulations which will change theatre in Los Angeles forever. This change will take away most of the opportunities for Equity actors to work in intimate theatre in Los Angeles and destroy Los Angeles Intimate Theatre as we know it.

48 years ago Equity actors in Los Angeles fought for and were granted the right to form theater companies and perform without pay. These were professional actors. They wanted the same thing that we want now: The right to do the work we have always dreamed of – to be artists in relationship to our community, in theatres that are safe and treat all the artists fairly.

Equity’s new rules and regulations destroy a system and a community that have been in place for almost half a century. The changes will eliminate the prior 99-seat plan and a settlement agreement approved by both actors and the union after actors sued the union in 1986 to prevent similar changes. These current changes were brought to an advisory referendum on April 21, 2015 and were defeated by the Los Angeles Equity Membership 67% to 33%. Actors said they did not want these new rules and regulations by a margin of 2 to 1. No one is forcing actors to volunteer. It is an actor’s choice. It is an actor’s right. Equity is going to make these changes and take away the actors’ rights even though the members have said no.

Equity’s new rules indicate Equity believes making money must take precedence over making art. These new rules purport to create more paid contract work for actors and stage managers in LA’s small theaters. That’s a positive goal, and one we can all agree on in principle. Unfortunately, creating a rule doesn’t create a reality. All of us in this community would be like to be paid more to do the work we do but that is not why we make theatre. Los Angeles’ Intimate Theatres are one of the few places on earth created to house hope – and so they are priceless and must be protected at all cost. Equity’s New Agreement and new internal codes won’t help theater artists in LA, it will hurt them. Art is not and cannot be solely a commercial venture.

Many theatres you know and love will either be forced out of business or have to use non-union actors. Actors you know and love will no longer be appearing in intimate theatres. The theatres that will be forced to change or close include theatres that are large and small – The Odyssey Theatre, The Fountain, The Skylight Theatre, Boston Court, The Victory, The Blank and more than 70 other theatres.

Equity says their new internal rules and codes will afford actors similar opportunities to what they used to have under the old agreement. This is not true. The new codes have budget and rehearsal period restrictions so onerous that the good theatre being done and seen in Intimate Theatres will disappear after December 14th. These rules and codes greatly diminish both actors and theatres’ ability to achieve excellence.

Page 11: P W C P Dutch Masters - Home - Footlights · Masters received a workshop production at LAByrinth Theater Company, and subsequent productions in Massachusetts and Philadelphia. As

The only exclusion which continues to give Equity members the opportunities they have had for the last 48-years is “the membership company rule.” Equity members can continue to volunteer in “Equity approved membership companies”, but without protections. This means that Equity members working in these theatres are no longer guaranteed the safety and other protections Equity still guarantees them in the other new rules and codes. Some Equity approved “membership theatres” you may know include Pacific Resident Theatre, Theatre 40, Theatre West, Rogue Machine, Antaeus, and many more. Why can actors volunteer in these theatres but cannot in other legitimate not-for-profit 99-seat and under theatre organizations?

The Los Angeles Intimate Theatre community has survived for almost a half century. It has been both a laboratory and a proving ground. Actors, playwrights and other theatre artists who may not have ever gotten an opportunity have found the beginnings of significant careers here. More than 120 plays that received world premieres in the Intimate Theatre Community have gone to contract. They’ve been seen on Broadway, Off-Broadway and all over the world. In most cases the local Equity actors who originated roles have benefited. Last year, Spring Awakening went from a 99-seat house to Broadway. 15 Los Angeles actors went with it.

For more information and to find out what you can do to help go to our website: www.ilove99.org

Don’t let Equity turn out the lights in December. Don’t let LA theatre go dark.

Mission Statement Rogue Machine only produces world premieres of new plays, primarily by Los Angeles based playwrights, and plays new to Los Angeles, including American, West Coast, and Regional premieres of significant contemporary theatrical works. Rogue Machine seeks to be a theatre of ideas and imagination, a theatre which mirrors and examines contemporary culture, a theatre which nurtures contemporary playwrights, and a theatre whose work continually engages the community and creates a dialogue which resonates after the curtain closes.

Rogue Machine also considers building an audience for the future to be an important part of its mission and seeks to attract and serve a younger, more diverse Los Angeles adult audience.
