THE FOUR- WAY TEST

Of The Things We Think,Say, or Do.

1. Is it the TRUTH?2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

***********

Conceived by Herbert J. Taylor, a Chicago Rotarian in July 1932In January 1943, Rotary International Board Of Directors agreed that

‘The 4-Way Test’ should be part of Vocational Service Ideal. Herbert J Taylor was RI President in 1954-55

WhatisRotary?WhatdoesaRotaryclubdo?ThesequestionsareoftenaskedofRotariansbyprospectivemembersandotherinterestedpeople,andtheyaredifficulttoanswereffectivelyinafewshortminutes.

AlthoughourprimarymottoServiceAboveSelfhighlightsouraltruisticnature,itfailstoanswerthetwoquestions.Therefore,Idecidedtosearchforabrieflystatedthemethatwouldfulfilltwoobjectives:

The first to explain the purpose of Rotary to non-RotariansandthesecondtoconfirmandvalidatetheimportanceofourprinciplestoRotarians.

Inmysearchfortherightwords,IreviewedthefourAvenuesofServiceandnotedthatClubServiceandVocationalServicebothhelpustoenjoylifeandtobegoodcitizens.CommunityService and Vocational Service combine to make our localcommunities better places for us to live and work. AndInternationalServicepermitsustopartnerwithclubsinothercountries and on different continents to make the world abetter place to live with an improved opportunity for worldunderstanding, goodwill, andpeace.

ItisimportanttorememberthatRotaryisa“spiritofservice”as well as an organization of Rotary clubs, and we need to shareourcorevaluesofservice, fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership with other people and organizations. Iconsidered many words and phrases to capture the essenceofRotary, andthewordsIfinallyselectedtodescribeRotary’scurrent mission and to highlight our achievements are whatwedobest:

Building Communities - Bridging Continents

Ihopeyouagreethatthesefourwordsaptlyreflectwhoweare, and what we do, as Rotarians. We are a unique and apremierorganization-certainlyoneofthebestintheworld.Webuildthespiritandresourcesofourlocalcommunitiesinanimportantway,andwearethebestintheworldatlinkingpeopleofgoodwill around theglobeand thengaining theircooperation and support to make the world a much betterplacetoliveandwork.InthewordsofEdCadman,“Rotaryisunitywithoutuniformity.”

We are indeed fortunate to be Rotarians!

I applied the same philosophy in developing the PresidentialCitation for 2010-11. I consider each of the four Avenuesof Service to be equally important, and we have created anewcitationprogram intheformofaquestionnaire tohelpclubstesttheireffectivenessinallfouravenues.Wealsohaveproducedahigher-level“PresidentialCitationwithDistinction”to challenge those clubs that routinely earn the annualpresidentialcitations.

BUILDING COMMUNITITESBRIDGING CONTINTENTS - RI PRESIDENTIAL CITATION 2010-11

Wehopethenewquestionnairewillbeahelpfultooltoboththe clubs and the district governors as we seek to lengthenourstrideandimproveourlevelsoffellowshipandservice,aswemoveforwardintothesecondcenturyofserviceforRotaryInternational,whichstartedwiththefirstconventionofRotaryclubsin1910.
