Retouching photos is one of the first basics of

    Photoshop we covered

    retouching-and-enhancing) in our night

school, and you have most of those tools

available in the GIMP as well. You don't

    have the advanced histogram that

Photoshop does, but you can access the Color

Balance, Levels, and Curves tools under the

Colors menu in the toolbar. The closest

equivalent of Photoshop's "Auto Tone"feature is the White Balance tool under

Colors > Auto, and you'll find the Healing

Brush and Clone Stamp tool in GIMP's

    toolbox (http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-

heal.html), with the familiar stamp and

bandage icons near the bottom of the

    topmost pane.

    1. Create Instagram-Like Effects

    Unfortunately, emulating old-school

Instagram-type effects in the GIMP is not as

easy as in Photoshop. If you're using

Photoshop, you can just download a couple

    of Photoshop actions

    instagram+like-effects-to-your-photos-with-

    free-photoshop-actions), but these w on't

work in new er versions of the GI MP.

However, doing them manually usually isn't

hardour friends at the How-To Geek have

already shown us how to make the Nashville

    and Lord Kelvin effects

    instagram-style-photo-effects-with-gimp-or-

photoshop/), and a quick Google search

should reveal details on any other effect you

want. If you're lucky, you might be able tofind GIMP plugins that simulate them, too,

    like this Lomo plugin

    (http://registry.gimp.org/node/7870) or this

vintage plugin (http://registry.gimp.org/node/1348), though there don't seem to be as m any

that perfectly emulate Instagram's filters. Doing it manually might take a little longer, but it

gives you more control and, ultimately, a better image, so it's worth the work.

Photoshop and the GIMP aren't exactly equals, but with a bit of ingenuity, you can get pretty

far with free software, no matter what you're trying to do. For more Photoshop tricks, checkout our #photoshop (http://lifehacker.com/photoshop) tag, and when it comes to finding

comparable tools and tricks in GIMP, remember that Google is your friend. If you're trying to

do it, chances are someone else has tried before, and found a solution. Got any of your own

image editing tricks that work in the GIMP? Share them with us in the comments.

    bobkoure and 2 others...

I tried GIMP and found it very hard to learn.

The second time I tried to use it, it was still

hard to learn. I switched to Paint.net and

found it easy to learn and use. The only trick

from the above list I've used is #4

    (http://lifehacker.com/4/) (Extract

    subject/new background); however, I can

visualize how to do most of the rest using the

    Paint.Net tools.

Any interest in doing a Paint.Net

    comparison?

Damn, every time I see someone use curves,

they don't really explain what they're doing.

This is why I've used Photoshop for years

and never used curves. Nobody seems to be

able to explain it, they're just like, "and then

    you do this!"

    'Curves' tool generally adjust the

color/brightness of a photo, on a scale. You

see the flat line in the screen shot above,

with the peach color 'graph' behind it? That's

a histogram. It's showing the density of the

colour on a spectrum. Using the curves tool,

you can 'bend' the straight line in order to

change some aspects of the color to

    brightness/saturation level. Usually, y ou

curve the line for good results, hence 'curve

    tool' .

what's going on w ith curves.

I am a fan of GIMP but only have a single

complaint: It takes forever for the program

to start up! I don't mean a few seconds, I

mean it can take up to 30-45 seconds for the

    program to fully load.

My computer is by no means new (~2009)

but hardware-wise, it has no problems

running programs that are just as recourse-

intensive as GIMP. Any idea why this may

be the case? As a result, I've strayed away

from GIMP and have been using Paint.NET.

A comm on issue to large startup times with

GIMP, is computer fonts, GIMP plugins, or

activation of the Script-fu server. GIMP

Reads/loads changes for any fonts on yourcomputer it can find, and has to get the

plugins 'initialized' or whatever it does to

them. More fonts/plugins == longer startup

times. Also, the Script-fu server, ensure it is

DISABLED through GIMP , or it'll spend a

while trying to make some network

    connections and what not.

I wouldn't be too smug. :) .NET Framework

Think of the .net framework as part of

Windows in the same way all the .dlls are.

When you load Chrome/Firefox/IE9 youdon't think of it as being heavy but those dlls

pack just as many bytes as the .net

    framework.

The whole .net framework isn't loaded into

memory for each progtam, just the

necessaty parts so it can be indeed, a light

program. .net is much more memory

efficient than the msvc libraries it replaced.

Has anyone figured out how to change the

default save format in Gimp yet? At the

same time that Gimp finally after years

decided to fix their awful interface with its

non connected palettes and windows, they

decided to force you to use their format for

    saving. Every other format requires

exporting, which is annoying and arrogant

    on their part.

I can feel a major upgrade to Pain.NET

coming before the end of the year. Thepublisher just released an alpha of version

    4.0.

Nice, great to see free alternatives to

    expensive software. Hopefully it'll encourage

Adobe to lower their ridiculous prices.

My take on Adobe's ridiculous prices is that I

can't bring myself to denounce anyone who

uses a cracked version for personal

home/hobby use, but if you're using them to

make money, it's absolutely worth the price

    and you should pay.

Well you piqued my curiosity so I did a little

    unofficial benchmarking.

Photoshop CS5 Extended just took 12

seconds to launch on my system (Quad Core

2.83GHz with 4GB RAM). That is without

the speed loader that can be launched with

Windows to make PS launch even faster. I

    have several third-party plugins installed,

which I mention because all installed PS

plugins are known to increase the launch

    time.

It used to be much worse than this though if

    I recall CS2 - CS4 correctly.

I'm so used to using Gimp that I don't think

I can't ever go back to Photoshop. Photoshop

became bloated with each new version. The

last Photoshop version I'd like was version 7.

I love that Gimp is cross-platform and I can

I've been using photoshop in a professional

I'm in the same boat as you - a G IMP user

for so long, I cant even come up with a good

reason to return to Photoshop. I demo'd the

new 'puppet morph' tool, and found it

insanely useful, but not $700+ useful...lol

other than that, I saw nothing there that I

couldn't do with GIMP, especially with the

    PSPI plugin active. ;)

As a longtime user of The GI MP I alway s

thought that the interface (menu design and

the way how the tools behave) is much

better than the one of Photoshop. Also, it still

is the only program with a good selection

tool. Seriously other programmers need to

    steal it from the GIMP.

This, exactly. The Philosophy of Non-

Destruction is a core principle that I believe

should be at the head of any beginner

tutorial of this kind. Y ou can end up with a

huge mess of a layer stack, especially on

composited images, but that's better than

    passing the point-of-no-return in your

history and having to start completely over.
