Dear Parents and Community Members…. Oration
The friends of the School of Arts Committee
invited our Choir to open the Henry Parkes Oration on 26th
October. This event is held in Tenterfield and Canberra in
alternate years.
The choir sang our ‘School Song’ and ‘I Am, You
Are, We Are Australian’. Laylah Maher and Deakin Lee
followed with a presentation regarding Henry Parkes. Both
items were warmly received by the crowd with acclamation
and a presentation of appreciation by Mr Ian Thom – Great
Great Grandson of Sir Henry Parkes.
The friends of the School of Arts expressed their
thanks to the students and the teachers responsible for
their support, especially on a Saturday afternoon, and look
forward to continued interaction with our school.

Term 4, Week 8, 2013
Did you know???
If a child misses
half an hour per day
it equals:
half a day per week
which is:
4 weeks per year
and over 13 years of schooling that’s
Nearly 1 ½ years
Last P&C Meeting for the year will be tonight at 6pm.
Everyone is welcome it would be fantastic to see you all there.
Crunch and Sip
Some simple, easy, quick, cheap and healthy
ideas for Crunch and Sip:
* A piece of fruit eg. an apple, plum, peach,
nectarine, pear, mandarin
* Fruit cut into pieces eg. orange cut into quarters;
watermelon, rock melon, honey dew cut into slices
* A handful of fruit eg. cherries, strawberries,
berries, a bunch of grapes
* A handful of nuts (preferably not roasted or
salted)
AVOID dried fruit as dried fruit is often high in
sugar.
Health Message
PASSIVE SMOKING – is the breathing in of
other people’s smoke. Cigarettes contain over 7000
chemicals which are not just harmful to the smoker
but those around them. Some of the health risks
include:
Sudden deaths in babies and infants;
Increased risk of developing respiratory
illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and pneumonia;
Increased likelihood of having coughs, wheezing,
phlegm and breathlessness.
Increased risk of meningococcal disease;
Increased risk of heart disease including stroke;
Increased risk of premature birth, complications
during delivery, miscarriage and stillbirth;
Increased risk of blood clots;
Reduced circulation;
Lower immunity;
Increased risk of developing some forms of cancer.
Smoking in government areas / grounds,
including schools and hospitals is PROHIBITED
(ILLEGAL). It is also illegal to smoke in or near many
sports grounds. In some states it is also illegal to
smoke in a car with passengers who are under the
age of 18.
If you are a smoker, it is never too late to
quit – just think of the health benefits (easier to
breathe, reduce the risk of heart disease and many
forms of cancer) and how much money you could
save. Also, think about those around you, especially
children, who don’t choose to smoke but have to
inhale all the polluted, unhealthy, disease causing air.

Intensive Swimming Scheme
Last week, students from Year 2-6 started
two weeks of intensive swimming. The program
concludes this FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29th .
All students are progressing extremely well.
We encourage families to take their child swimming to see
what they now can do and to further assist in their
development – “Practice makes Perfect” (or at least better).
5-A-Side Hockey Last week, the finals for the 5-A-Side Hockey
Competition were held. The Bubblegum Heads (Thomas
Newman, Tamika McDonald, Hamish Cook, Loughlin Brack and
Sophie Ryan) and Billybob Square Pants (Deakin Lee, Amber
Butler, Shaun Brodie, Isabella Franchi and Anthony Luxford)
finished equal third with the Party Rockers (Chaney Rhodes,
Courtney Tonkin, Phoebe Cooper, Declynd Morris and Tyler
Sargeant) and the Crunchy Munchies (Liana Meneguzzi, Jade
Shearer, Jayden Zellers, Jacob Chawner and Paddy Hawke)
playing off to be the champions. In a tight game, the Party
Rockers scored an early goal, but did not secure their win
until 20 seconds from the end when they scored another goal
to win 2-0.
Congratulations to all the students who participated
giving up many lunch times to compete. It was fantastic to
witness the improved skill, team work and the development
of communication skills between the genders and the various
year levels.
Summer Reading Challenge Scholastic is holding a Summer Reading Challenge in
which children are being encouraged to read and log their
reading minutes. The reading minutes are recorded for our
school and our country as the Challenge is also between
Australia and New Zealand. The students just have to lodge
t h e i r s u m m e r r e a d i n g m i n u t e s a t
www.scholastic.com.au/summer to win some great prizes for
themselves and the school.
Reading for at least 10 minutes a day during the
school holidays sets your child up for a great start in the
new school year, keeps their mind active during the break
and develops overall reading skills and a love of reading.
Scripture Teacher and Parent Helpers Thank You Lunch
On Thursday, December 5th at 1pm, the staff are
holding a “Thank You” Lunch for our wonderful scripture
teachers and parent helpers. The lunch is for all people have
have taught scripture this year and/or helped our school
(some examples include: parent helpers in the classrooms
during reading, maths and other lessons, assisting in the
coaching of sport teams etc.).
This lunch is a small recognition to show our
appreciation for the amazing contribution you give to our
school providing our students with many opportunities and
assisting the staff.

Movember Update
As Movember draws to a close, our male staff have remained strong and avoided the urge to shave
for almost a month. In order to make the sacrifice worthwhile, the school will hold an out of uniform day
this Thursday 28th Movember. The dress will be ‘BLUE’ and correlates with Beyond Blue, the charity
behind Movember in support of men’s health. The cost will be a gold coin donation with all proceeds going
directly to Beyond Blue.
The boys would like to thank everyone for their support and look forward to a shave over the
weekend. Although, there is a vicious rumour that Mr Maher will continue with the growth as he’s run out
of razors!
