I think that sometimes we need an excuse to just take a moment from the hectic schedules we follow, slow down and contemplate about what we have in our lives for which we should be thankful. We tend to think of the big things in our lives, but if we really think about it, most of the time it is the small things that happen every day. NEW FEATURE ARTICLES ON OUR AR-CHIVAL COLLECTION The Tradition will now have a special feature of Archival material from our collection in each is-sue. We will have historic photographs, articles with photographs and objects from our showcase collections. Over the last 5 years, under the direc-tion of Margret Bertolone Maritz 6 women (Class of 1966) Anna Georgalis Thanos, Jewell Kovalchik Demo, Karen Blower Charek, Nancy Fedak, Ellen Dean Durbin (deceased) made up our Archival Directory Committee. They have cataloged literal-ly thousands of all forms of memorabilia sent in by thousands of Alumni over the last 67 years. We have two large display cases one in the front hallway and the other in the back hall by thr Ar-chival Room. In todays edition the Archival page we will look at four photos from the Parma Schools. The John Muir elementary staff, 1943-44. The cheerleaders from 1948. 1960’s photo of the Sr English room with the oak bookcases, Windsor chairs and the working firer place. The Home Economics show-case in the cafeteria hall way . Each issue we will try to give you a glimpse into our vast files. Some of the photos may not be in the best of shape, but we will do the best to clean them up. Hope you enjoy them We will go with a different era in the Spring issue.. We are expanding the number of Alumni display showcases by one after the holiday break. They will become part of our PSH guided tours we provide for Class reunions, Golden Re-union and small group tours.

The 1943– 1944 Faculty of John Muir elementary school on Broadview Rd. The faculty of all women was not unusual during the War. I do not have their names, but students who graduated in the 50’s –70’s might.

Show case of the home Economics department in the cafete-ria hall way circa 1950’s / 60’s. Notice the Bobby socks and Spalding shoes.

The 1948 Parma Schaaf High Cheerleaders for the first undefeated team at Schaaf Stadium on W54th. From L to R Lois Bedrend, Sally Jargensen, Virginia Lahut, Carole Basil.

This was the Sr English room in the 1950’s and 60’s. All the wood trim was oak and the chairs were Windsor style. Students sat at tables instead of desks. The English dept. designed this room as it was to be built by the construction company to their specifications.

Wanted Graduates for 2019 PSH Distinguished Hall of Fame Nominations

We have had thousands of graduates from the Queen of High School, PSH. Many have taken their education they received from Parma Senior High School and developed it into a successful vocation or profession. We have many Lawyers, Volunteers, Artists, Teachers, Doctors, Scientists, Designers, Social Workers, Police Offic-ers, Musicians, Service Men & Women, Nutritionists, Tradesmen, Businessmen & Women, Accountants, Ad-ministrators, etc. Many of our graduates have met many challenges in their lives, professions and or communi-ties and have become very successful. Yet, out of the thousands of graduates, we only have about 75 Distin-guished Hall of Famers.

Part of the Distinguished Hall of Fame process is attending an Assembly with 11th and 12th graders presently enrolled at PSH. These students are genuinely motivated and encouraged by the Inductees. This is another way we can give back to our youth. We can inspire the youth of today to become the Distinguished Citizens and Hall of Famers of Tomorrow. The program begins with an Assembly followed by a Brunch, and a Tour of PSH today. You will be surprised how well behaved the students are and see the changes that have occurred at PSH. The day is topped off with a cocktail hour and delicious dinner at the Event Center of St. Michael’s Woodside.

All nominations are reviewed by a committee of individuals who come together with a variety of talents. The committee then recommends the nominees to the Alumni Association Board.

Why not nominate someone you know for this honor. The 2019 Nomination form can be downloaded from the PSH Alumni Association website. Nominations are due April 30, 2019. You can email the applications to Barbara (Tomc) Filipow’61 ([email protected]) or Chris Leo’03 ([email protected]). You can also mail the application to Parma Senior High Alumni Association 5311 Longwood Ave. Parma, OH. 44134. Your participation and support is always appreciated.

From the Editors Desk Cont pg 1 PSH for the Holidays, but today, the feeling I get from walking through the halls and greeting students at the Archival room is the same. Good memories and hope for the future.. Hope those memories of PSH are happy ones. New Feature for the Tradition—THINGS FROM THE PSH ARCHIVAL/ MUSEIUM COLLECTION We are starting a new feature that will be a regular series in each edition of the Tradition. We have planed to incorporate what we have collected over the years from individual alumni donors and from classes. Some of the photos will be of Parma high stu-dents from various times and other will be of objects and collectables we have stored at the high school. We will also provide photos of the three Parma High Schools from the oldest to the current building. We will show you the insides of the bell tower, the third floor , the remains of the movie projection room be-hind the auditorium balcony. We look forward to your comments and suggestions about this new feature, Write us and let us know.

THE TRADITION IS NOW ACCEPTING BUSI-NESS CARD ADS. In the past the Tradition was restricted by the Fed-eral Postal System and the rules pertaining to 501 c 3 tax exempt non-profits on ads in the newsletter. Because we used a postal indicia for our mailing ( used for mailing over 200 pieces of mail at a re-duced rate per item) we were restricted on the ads we could use. Today we have been given the green light on accepting certain types of ads for the Tradi-tion because we now send them 1st class mail. The Tradition and the PSH Alumni Assoc. retains the final acceptance on content and acceptance of all ads. We will not accept political, religious, or objec-tionable business cards. There are no plans on changing the Redman to another name at this time. As you can imagine at this time there are those who would want to make a change. We have maintained that we will not change the name that we have had since 1936 and for the reasons it was chosen by the students, the school system and the commu-nity at that time. Until we are required by the Ohio High School Ath-letic Department or the Board of Education we will keep the name.

In 1953 Carol Kneebusch was to be crowned as PSH’S first homecoming queen when , only 3 days before school started, she was struck down with po-lio. She never attended classes in the new building nor saw a game on the new Byers Field. At City Hospital polio ward, a handful of her friends crowned Carol Queen of the Class of 1954. Her close friend, Claire Justice Eckles, stood in for her on the field at homecoming in 1953. In 1993 new field was installed and as part of the rededication ceremonies. Carol, now 56, received her crown, 40 years after that 1953 homecoming. Carol Kneebusch Vaccariello went on to graduate from Baldwin-Wallace College, marry, and have a child. She taught speech therapy classes at BW and supervised the speech clinic one day a week. She was a grandmother. (Carol passed away in 2002)
