BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES12/17/02 18 Thescorreans present

La vena has the quarterly report done and available foranyone who wants a copy. There are two outstandingfunds that were requested but have not been expended yet($100 for scribal supplies and $60 for gloves for thefighters) . She added that she is still concerned about thebarony's fixed annual expenses (including $1,200 for rentfor St. Stephen's).

The metal symposium will rescheduled from the end ofOctober due to the participants' desire not to camp in thecold. Lavena said she hopes to move it to the end ofSeptember.

Planning for the Lady and the Lion event is going well.

Alison asked to amend her College of Three Ravens bid toadd $100 for lunch costs (for a total of $200 for lunch),since she realized that the original amount requested wouldnot be enough. The motion carried.

Gwen: There will be no demo on Friday for Lord of TheRings: The Two Towers.

There will be a demo/event on June 7, "The Mists ofAlbion," at Genesee Community College. The Hael will holdits baronial champs on a different weekend, Gwen noted. The college is "paying for almost everything." There won't bea feast, but Katrina is planning a lunch, which will be $3per person. (The cost has been budgeted at $2 per person,so the Barony will make $1 off every lunch sold.) There willbe space for fighting, fencing, merchant, various demoactivities and classes, and possibly thrown weapons.

Grendel: The Fyle School gymnasium will not be availablefor the next two months, so fencing practice will take placeat a dojo Downtown until February. The jugglers can jointhe fencers, he added.

Caradawc presented a bid for Pax Intermptus, July 4-6,at Long Acre Farms again. The site will have more shadethis time, he said, and there will be another port-o-let (for atotal of four). Also, campers can camp in the fenced»in areaagain. Caradawc does not currently have a head cook, although he has asked someone. Astridr spoke up, sayingshe might be willing to do the meal as well. Devon said theBarony will consider the bid when he has a cook on the bid.

Katrina presented a proposal to move the Barony's meetingsand dance practices (and possibly other activities, such assewing circles) from St. Stephen's Church to the Adams StreetCenter, in Corn Hill (The heavy fighters have held practice therefor almost two years.)

She recently talked at length with the director, who is veryenthusiastic about the Barony using the center. He is willing toamend the current written contract with the heavy fighters toinclude the meetings (and other activities). The Barony coulduse the facilities Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays free ofcharge, provided that we do a few demos and allow the publicto watch.

The building is open throughout the year, including summers, and is open until 9:30 p.m. There are two rooms available, alarger room for dance or martial activities, and a smallermeeting room. The larger room contains pool and foozballtables. The site includes a kitchen, which has a stove, twoindustrial refrigerators, and a microwave oven. In addition, there is a swimming pool and a large, well-lit parking lot. Thebuilding has 24-hour security and on-site staff, as well as anelevator. It is on the bus line.

The fighters already participated in two demos for the Centerearlier this year: a Main Street event, where all the activities inthe Center occur on Main Street. (The dancers could have astage in the middle of the street, Katrina noted.) There was alsoa city-wide martial arts demo in March, in which the fightersdid a melee; the public thought it was really cool.

Peregrine was very concerned that she talked to arepresentative from the Center earlier that day, and was toldthat the Barony would have to apply for a permit and pay $25an hour to use the building. Katrina said she'd talked to thehead of the city's Park and Recreation Department, so she wassure that the person Peregrine talked to was wrong.

A lengthy discussion ensued as to the merits of leaving orstaying at St. Stephen's, with which the Barony has a month-to-month agreement to rent the church for meetings and dancepractices. Some were worried about "leaving St. Stephen's highand dry" after over a decade of close ties (especially when thechurch is in financial needs) while several said that thechurch's relationship with the Barony has deteriorated a greatdeal over the past couple of years (less cordial relations, severalrequests for other forms of remuneration, a rent increase, less-than-polite complaints about parking and bathroom problems).Devon noted that he, personally, would be happy not to dealwith the stairs anymore.

After much discussion, Peregrine recommended that theBarony try out the Center for a few meetings and practicesbefore considering moving there permanently. Devon said wewill hold the January business meeting at the Center, in orderto give enough time to notify everyone in the Barony about thelocation change.

Peregrine said she knew that this would be a businessdecision, and that it would be good to decrease the Barony'sannual expenses. However, she noted, the Barony has had along relationship with St. Stephen's and she felt that there wassome comparison to corporations closing up plants and movingbusiness overseas to make use of cheaper labor.

In response, several gentles suggested ways of showingappreciation and support for the church in recognition of thelong relationship, such as a fundraising dinner, demos, orvarious non-monetary donations.
