All exhibitors in beef, dairy cattle, meat goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep and swine must have
received Livestock Quality Assurance training or testing through a UNL Extension program.

Egg Science Experiments
Each summer, over 500 4-H'ers convene at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus to test their skills in animal science and family and consumer sciences dur-ing PASE (Premier Animal Science Events) and Life Challenge. Teens compete in a variety of different contests including: livestock, meats and poultry judging, livestock skillathon, livestock quiz bowl, life challenges and clover challenge. While on cam-pus, young people have the opportunity to take part in faculty-led workshops, cam-pus tours, and special sessions by UNL recruiters. Events will be held June 30-July 1. Contest entries from May 16 through June 13.

Reminder: If you plant to exhibit flowers/vegetables at the
fair, SAVE THE TAGS! Cultivar and Variety Names are
required, so store the tags/seed packets in a safe spot!
Career Portfolio Update - May
Public speaking is a communication skill with many career possibilities. Present 4-H
members and 4-H Alumni have identified communication skills as some of
the most important life skills gained through their 4-H experience.
Remember to document your speech in the 4-H Portfolio!

Tractor/Farm Safety Training Events
Classes consist of two days of instruction plus homework assignments. Classes are from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. each day. Dates and locations include: May 22-23, Fairgrounds, Kearney May 28-29, Haskell Ag Lab, Concord June 2-3, West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte June 5-6, Fairgrounds, Valentine June 12-13, Farm & Ranch Museum, Gering June 16-17, College Park, Grand Island June 19-20, Ag Research and Development Center, Mead Pre-registration is strongly encouraged at least two weeks before a location's start date to the Holt-Boyd UNL Extension Office, 128 N. 6th Street, O’Neill, NE 68763. Cost is $60, which includes educational materials, testing, supplies, lunches and breaks. Maverick Young Entrepreneur Boot Camp The Nebraska Development Center in Omaha is sponsoring the Maverick Young Entrepreneur Boot Camp, designed for high school freshman and sophomores, June 2-6, 2014 at the UNO College of Business Administration. The camp will run from 8:30AM to 12:30PM Monday through Friday. Students will learn about innovation and business startups, meet local entrepreneurs, have on-site visits to local startups and lots of hands-on experiential exercises. The cost for signing up is $149.00 per participant. Significant scholarships are available for eligible students. Please note that hous-ing is not provided.

4-H Horticulture Judging Contest A horticulture judging contest will be held on June 18, 7:00 p.m. at the Rhebb Acreage located 3 miles northeast of Norfolk, NE (84494 Saddle Rd). The program is open to all 4-Hers and interested adults. There will be prizes for first, second and third place finishers; snacks and fun for all. Contact the Wayne County Extension Office at 402-375-3310 for more information and to register. Pre-registration due by 5 PM, June 13. Directions will be given when registering. This would be a great way to practice for the 2014 Nebraska 4-H Online Horticulture Judging available from June 16
th
at 1:00 a.m. until June 23rd
at midnight.

2014 Beef Ambassador Contest Do you know a student that has a passion for the beef industry? The Nebraska CattleWomen will host the 2014 Beef Ambassador Contest on June 11 in Gothenburg, Nebraska. The contest will begin at 1:00 pm. The contest provides an opportunity for youth to become spokesperson and future leaders of the beef industry.
Cash prizes will be awarded in each of the three age divisions. Age divisions are based on the student’s age as of September 1, 2014. Junior division is 8-12 years old, intermediate is 12-16 years old, and senior division is 17-20 years old. The winners of the intermediate and senior division may be eligible to compete for the National Beef Am-bassador contest in Denver, Colorado. All Nebraska Beef Ambassadors will be invited to promote the beef industry at events such as the Nebraska State Fair.

All of the animal ID affidavits are available for download. Please remember that all remaining ID sheets MUST be turned in June 15 to be eligible to show at the County Fair, State Fair, Ak-Sar-Ben or other 4-H Animal Shows. Don’t forget deadlines for some ID sheets are due at different times, so please reference the Animal ID Guideline link. The Animal ID Guideline link is new this year!
