EDI Governing Board (As on January 1, 2013)
Director’s MessageThe Post Graduate Diploma in Management - Development
Studies is a novel programme which was previously offered as
a one year NGO Management programme. This programme is
designed to train and groom students to become
professionally competent development experts and socially
responsible individuals.
Several years of teaching, research and training experience of
the faculty at EDI has led to make this programme
theoretically sophisticated, empirically grounded and multi-
disciplinary in orientation. The programme is divided into four
components. The first component familiarizes the students
with the basic management and social sciences such as; organizational behavior, accounting,
economics, political science and sociology. The second component equips them with analytical tools
like quantitative and qualitative research methods, philosophical and methodological foundations of
development research, and project planning and evaluation. The third component provides them
grounding in theoretical understanding of 'development' through courses such as; development
theories, development economics, public economics, environment and sustainable development,
and institutions, governance and policies. The fourth component delves into theme-based
perspectives like human development, education and development, civil society groups/non-
governmental organizations and development. As part of the programme, students write a
dissertation based either on field research or secondary data and undergo an internship.
With such comprehensive learning about development process and practical training through their
dissertations and internships in development issues, the graduating students can successfully enter
professional careers in civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, socially
responsive corporate organizations, or channelize their entrepreneurial spirit by setting up social
enterprises and businesses.
I wish students all the best in their future life and ensure organisations participating in EDI
Placements, that they will find rich resource in our students with professional competence and
social change entrepreneurial capabilities.
Good wishes
Dinesh Awasthi

- About the Institute
“
”
Business is not just about making money. Business is about making a contribution, creating jobs, prosperity,
not just for yourself, but for your family, for your workers, for your community and for the nation.
Dr. Sam Pitroda,
Adviser to the Prime Minister, Public Information Infrastructure & Innovations.
Chief Guest at the 13th EDI-PGP Convocation: 2011-12.
It is possible to grow entrepreneurial capabilities through well-conceived and well-directed
initiatives. The majestic, sprawling and architecturally brilliant EDI Campus has been harvesting this
vision to nurture entrepreneurs since 1983. The green and eco-friendly campus won the
prestigious “Aga Khan Award for Architecture” and was adjudged as a place with an “inviting
environment for work, interaction and repose.”
The Entrepreneur is in all of us...
Innovative Approaches - 360° Development
EDI applies innovative training techniques, competent faculty support, consultancy and quality teaching and training materials to create specialists in fields of development research, micro finance, fund raising, corporate social responsibility and social entrepreneurship. This vision is brought to life by some of the best research academicians, consultants, extension workers, trainer motivators and a large section of visiting faculty from academic institutions and professional organizations.
EDI offers academic opportunities that are intellectually rigorous and extraordinarily diverse. Three decades of pioneering work has elicited national and international recognition from such organizations like World Bank, International Labour Organization, UNIDO, Commonwealth Secretariat and several other agencies. EDI is one of the panel institutes for Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India’s Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Program (ITEC). We have developed and submitted the National Entrepreneurship Policy (currently under review).
Several centers have been strategically planned to administer programmes to generate awareness, sensitize environment, fortify institutional linkages, networking and offer training in specialized areas.

All academic programs conducted by EDI are socially relevant, and serve a vision to build a just and
equitable society. The PGDM- DS program is specially constructed to energize a sustainable social
development vision.
The students are selected through a rigorous, merit-based selection procedure. This includes some
of the toughest entrance exams scores of the country, followed by a group discussion and personal
interview to select only the best talents with committed intention.
A robust course architecture inculcates a wealth of contemporary knowledge in diversified
subjects. The course pedagogy enhances the student’s ability to critically explore and understand
development practices, policy analysis, document and present proposals, conduct PRAs and develop
alternatives.
This academic learning is enhanced with extensive field exposures, workshops and interactions.
Each of the six trimesters take the students through a component of field exposure to give them an
insight into grass-root level needs, exemplary examples of social entrepreneurship and functioning
institutions of the government. For instance, this year’s activities and field exposures included many
enlightening events: workshops on Corporate Ecological Responsibility, Natural Resource
Management, Management of Health and Education sector with Chetna and Pratham; a thirty hour
session course on International Institutions and Strategies; field visits to Juhapura, Vatva, Dahod and

others.
Extra-curricular activities
further support practical
learning. This year, the students
conducted Pahele Aap, a road
safety awareness program by
SEED; a trek at eco-park in
Anand, and book reviews like
understanding liberal freedom
by interpreting Gandhi’s Hind
Swaraj with deliberations by
Dr. Parmanand Mishra.

The Placement ProcessThe PGDM-DS offers you a wide range of options with students and graduates at all levels of experience, from fresh graduates and post graduates to seasoned alumni. The campus recruitment program facilitates connecting the aspirations of professionally trained current graduating students. It prepares the students with career counseling, structural personality development program, and pre- placement orientation.
Our dedicated placement staff will help organisations implement recruiting strategies for an optimum match of professional talent and organisation needs.
The placement office will keep the students informed about job announcements as and when they are received. Afterwards, the employers may carefully scrutinise the profile of the students and prepare a shortlist of students they would like to interview.
It will be preferable, but not obligatory for the organisations to send their representatives to EDI to meet the graduating batch. We encourage participating organisations to take telephonic interviews and Skype Calls for student interaction. The participating organisations will be invited for campus interviews at EDI on mutually convenient date in March-2013. The participating organisations should send their representative with full authority to make final job offers, immediately after the interviews. It will be our privilege to host the representatives of the recruiting organisations and provide all necessary assistance to make their stay on our campus comfortable. The Gujarat
Ahmedabad is the largest city in the state of Gujarat and one of the largest urban agglomerations in India. Located on the banks of the River Sabarmati, the city is the administrative centre of Ahmedabad district and was the capital of Gujarat from 1960 to 1970; the capital was shifted to Gandhinagar thereafter. In colloquial Gujarati, it is commonly called
Amdavad. Ahmedabad was founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah to serve as the capital of the Sultanate of Gujarat. The city is named after its founder. The city established itself as the home of a booming textile industry, which earned it the nickname "the Manchester of the East." A rising centre of education, information technology and scientific industries, Ahmedabad remains the cultural and commercial heart of Gujarat and much of western India.
