Annual Report 2015
Message to our friends and supporters
QUALITAS OF LIFE FOUNDATION | ANNUAL REPORT 2015 | 01
There is no doubt that 2015 has been a great year for Qualitas of Life Foundation with
everything beginning to fall into place.
This was a consequence of the commitment and dedication of the Board of Directors to
make this happen. I’m very thankful for the way each member shared their talents and their
time thinking about different ways in which we could help Qualitas fulfill its mission.
Having the necessary resources and the right people to manage the organization has also
been a powerful contributing factor. We now have a committed staff of individuals from a
diverse field of expertise that is inspired by their daytoday work and the influence that it
has on the Hispanic Community in New York and beyond.
During 2015 we trained 1,050 people, contributing to changes in their attitudes and
behaviors related to their financial management. Participant testimonials such as this one
make us feel very proud of our work and inspire us to continue on this wonderful journey:
"After attending Qualitas’ workshops, I I understood better the banking system and wasable to open a bank account. Now my money is safe and I know I will not lose my savings. It
is safe even if there's a burglary at my house as it happened once". Minerva Salazar
My special thanks to our donors and supporters, who increase their donation every year and
to whom we are accountable.
Qualitas is about to turn 10 years old, and we will celebrate this anniversary with all of those
who are part of our family, and of course by continuing to strive to reach more and more
people with our powerful programs. Thank you everyone, for believing in us, and enhancing
the lives of those we serve for the better.
I know that the idea that my dear Alexis and myself once had, is now shared by many
others and Qualitas will continue to respond to the poignant needs of Hispanic families in
New York for comprehensive financial education for years to come.

QUALITAS OF LIFEFOUNDATION
Qualitas of Life Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides basic financial
education to Hispanic individuals and their families in New York, in order to foster
their financial security and improve their standard of living.
Lack of information and access to basic financial services are
pressing issues for Hispanic individuals, a rapidly growing community
in New York. This problem deprives Hispanic families of economic
opportunities, prevents them from establishing financial security and
stability, and makes them targets for scams and abuses.
In 2004, Marcela Orvañanos de Rovzar moved to New York City. As
a Mexican philanthropist with a background inability development and
fundraising, Marcela was startled by the critical living conditions of
Hispanics and was determined to find the means to support this
community. After consulting financial education experts and working
closely with community members, Marcela founded Qualitas of Life
Foundation.
Qualitas financial education workshops began in 2007 and, thanks to
the continued support its’ Board, our committed volunteer base,
sponsors and strategic alliances, we have expanded to teach
workshops in community centers in all 5 boroughs of New York City.

According to Pew Research Center, the Hispanic community makes up 27%
of the population of NYC. Many of whom, came to NY to pursue the American
dream, however, for most, that dream seems unattainable as they face
countless barriers to fully integrate into US society.
At Qualitas, we believe that Financial Education offers participants essential
information and tools to strive towards that dream.

Our participants
Our participants come from lowincome
communities and benefit from our financial
education program through workshops held
in our strategic alliances throughout the five
boroughs of New York City and beyond..
Through our workshops, we enable our
participants to use the available resources to
improve their personal finances and provide
more opportunities for their families. What
makes the program unique is the way in
which trustbuilding, selfempowerment, and
communitybuilding elements have been
strategically embedded into the curriculum –
tailored specifically for the Hispanic
population.
By gradually opening accounts, eliminating
credit card debt, improving credit scores,
budgeting, saving, and avoiding high fees of
loan sharks and check cashing
establishments, participants will foster their
financial security and improve their standard
of living.
Upon finishing, many graduates have
obtained credit, secured insurance,
purchased Certificates of Deposits, and
opened bank accounts, or simply learned to
better manage their households’ finances
while communicating more openly about it
with their families.

In the workshops, we talk about emotions regarding yourfinances, do you notice a difference in your attitude towardyour finances when you think about how you felt before andafter the workshops? My attitude to money change, because before I was afraid that Iwas going to pass something sick me, that if he spent a lot and ifI do not have to pay, and if I get sick. Now with the budget andI'm not afraid, I see how much there first won and then I can notspend more than that, or spend more than they can not afford. Ithink I am now careful now I'm more careful with money.
In the workshop I learned that the credit cards should be usedresponsibly, it is not good to have many cards, but it is not bad touse it. I have also learned how to do a budget, which helps me torealize that in effect, I’m able to pay the monthly amount of thecredit card and it’s more convenient to use it instead of myfriend’s loans . She asks interest, but the ones from the bank arelower and also help me with my credit history.
Do you have a financial goal?My goal is to open a restaurant here. I have been working inrestaurants for a long time, think I know the business. Besides, Ilearned that I just need the ITIN number to open a business and Ialready have that.
What was the workshop that served you more? The budget workshop helped me a lot. I started we my budgetand has helped me to put limits on my own expenses. As abusboy, my income is based on the number of tips that I receiveevery day. Every Sunday I do my budget, it’s not easy because Iam not used to it, but now I check that is a good practice becauseI have more control of my money.By managing my budget well Ican start saving for my dream. After the workshop I also openeda savings account.

Meet Martin Luna
He attended Qualitas of Life workshops at
H.A.N.D.S. Community Center, South Bronx
artin Luna is from a small village in Oaxaca, near Guajaca,Mexico. Martin has lived in NY for 5 years. When he first arrivedhe stayed in California, then Oregon before finally coming to NY.He is the eldest brother of 10 children. He couldn't finish highschool because he had to work to help his parents and siblings.
When I came to NY, says Martin, it was a difficult time, I didn’tknow the city, the language or anyone else besides my cousin. Icame to NY looking for better job opportunities, today I work in anItalian restaurant as a busboy.
How do you define your Finances and what was the mostimportant thing you learned in the workshops?I think, I’m not so bad managing my finances. For my emergenciesI have a friend who lends me money, she's a good friend whohelped me with money when my father died; also I have creditcards, with $500 approved at the beginning, and after a year thebank increased it to $3,000. So for now, I'm fine.
Although I had a credit card, before the Qualitas workshop I didn’tknow much about the banking system. For example, I didn’t knowif credit cards were good or bad so I would rather ask my friend, and I pay her weekly.
In the workshop, I learned that the credit cards should be usedresponsibly and that it is not good to have many cards. I alsolearned how to do a budget, which allows me to pay the monthlyamount of the credit card which is more convenient than myfriend’s loans and this also helps me with my credit history.

day, it is worth it"

lba MedinaOsorio is from Bogotá, Colombia. She came toNY in 1997. She studied law in her country but has never beenable to work as a lawyer in the US. She says that the systemhere is different from the system in South America. "I tried toenter to the system several years ago, that was the goal ofcoming to NY, but here I encountered a difficult language barrier, cultural barriers, economic barriers and all obstacles possiblebecause education in this country is extremely expensive."
Since Alba could not work as a lawyer, she started working withher physical skills, as most Hispanic individuals do, she workedin a restaurant and began babysitting children. For the last 15years, she has worked as a taxi driver in New York City.
How do you define your financial position and what was themost important thing you learned in the workshops? My finances have not been very stable, my work does not giveme a steady income. In addition, my work is affected by theseasons, winter is a very good for me because there is a lot ofwork, but summer people prefer to walk so I need to learn toproject my income better to account for the seasonal variabilitybetween winter to summer.
Given my difficulties in planning for the future, I have made manymistakes in my finances. The biggest mistake I was making wasto have a single budget for my personal finances and mybusiness, my finances were a disaster and I had to ask for aloan. In Qualitas’ workshops I learned that it is important toconsider the risks and benefits of the banking system, and beforeaccepting a credit card it is best to calculate your annualpercentage rate. The facilitators taught us how to calculateinterest. They explained to us that before making a financialdecision you have to really take the time to consider your optionsand do the necessary calculations.
In the workshops, we talk about emotions regarding yourfinances, do you notice a difference in your attitudetoward your finances when you think about how you feltbefore and after the workshops? In the first class, I learned how finances can affect moods andvice versa. Not having money or being heavily indebted candefinitely make you feel one way I get stressed, depressed itcan be a feeling of great frustration. But if you learn todetermine what part of you, you are projecting on yourfinances, if you know the root of the problem, you can fix it. Inthe workshop, I realized I was not alone and that I was not theonly one who had made mistakes.
Do you have a financial goal?My financial goal is for my child to go to college, he is 15 yearsold and soon he will graduate high school. I also I haveanother goal, but longer term, "I want financial peace"
What was the workshop that served you more? The workshop on the banking system, because I never knewwhat a credit union was let alone the difference betweenbanks and credit unions. I didn’t know that there were smallcredit unions exclusively for people who run small businesses.Among the changes, I made after Qualitas, was to put $ 300 ina credit union I recently joined in Queens.
