DEFINITION OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
It is a bodily movement produced by the skeletal muscles that expends energy beyond resting levels.
There are various types of physical activities; Occupational ( walking, sweeping, lifting). Transport (Walking or cycling to school or
work.) Recreational (hiking, gardening, riding,
dancing). Exercise (jogging, swimming, sports) .
HOW MUCH P.A. SHOULD YOU GET
Children and adolescents require at least 30 to sixty minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily

Physical inactivity results in many health problems – obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, osteoporosis and cancer
Obese children have a 70% chance of being overweight or obese as adults, facing higher risk for heart disease, diabetes , strokes and several types of cancers.
Diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension are now the leading cause of death in the Caribbean.

Improves cardiovascular and muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and physical fitness
Facilitates the development of self discipline
It aids in stress reduction by providing an outlet for releasing tension and anxiety.
It helps children and adults socialize and improve their self- confidence and self- esteem.

Physical activity gives us a beter appearance. It helps keep down our fat levels and delays aging
Physical activity reduces our risk of illness.It can reduce the risk of colon cancer and diabetes by 50%.
It can also reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later years by enhancing peak bone mass
An active lifestyle during adolescence can play a role in optimising growth and development
Physical activity can help adolescent girls improve their self esteem, assertiveness, pride, confidence independence and leadership skills
BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Physical activity also promotes menstrual regularity and may help decrease the number of teenage pregnancy and risky sexual behaviours
Engaging in physical activity allows us to join clubs, meet people with the same interest and make new friends
It allows us to develop a spirit of teamwork and cooperation which is useful in our working lives
There are many career opportunities available through engaging in physical activity
Physical active people make fewer visits to the doctor. They feel good about themselves and live longer, healthier and more satisfying lives.
