Editor’s Note
From the President june 2018
De Residential Fum MembsSummer has arrived and with it the busyness of the
exterior painting season. I hope you will carve out
some time to attend AST 19 in Minneapis on July
27 and 28th. For those that have never been, it is peer
driven conference built around the best practices for
Residential Painting Contractors. You will hear presen-
tations from contractors like yourself and have time to
discuss best practices with some of the best in our
industry from around the country. Add two great
evening events, one an evening cruise on Lake
Minnetonka and you will come away with knowledge
and friendships that you will never forget. There are
a bunch of excuses and I have them too. Decide that
there will be no excuse to keep you from attending
this year. We have a few spots remaining and would
love to see you there so don't delay and register today!
See y in the Twin Cities! Thanks
Scott Lollar

AST 19 in Minneapis

From The BodBack in 1999 I attended AST (Paints Advanced Sh Talk) in Chicago, it was the most inuential decision I have made in my profes-sional career – I attribute millions of dollars of sales and years of optimal business performance - and really good fortune to boot – to the luck of
that decision.
I use the word luck intentially; I was lucky that smart, aggressive and savvy business men and women decided to create and attend this event. AST was the original crowd-source fountain of wisdom for our craft & trade,
attended by self-selected individuals intent on increasing performance, prots, and vacation time.
Through those introductions I have saved thousands of hours of doing, thinking, fretting, undoing, rethinking, re-fretting. Not that those activities and reactions no longer occur – they certainly do. The dierence is I have an informal board of directors that I can call, text, email when I am vexed, or need info or resources I don’t possess. An invaluable resrce that has given me back years of my life.
Of the friends we count as true, none count more highly than the ones we suer with; being in this business, the opportunities for suering are without end and I say with complete honesty that my best friends today are the people who have helped me along the way – these people.
Never has this band of entrepreneurs and friends let me down. My hope is that in some measure, I have been equally useful to some of them as well.
1st Rule of AST: Nev miss AST. See you in Minneapolis!

With all the major rocks in my jar,why am I prioritizing AST? It is unquestionably because a couple of those huge time and stress expenditures in my life right now are business related. A possible buyout of my brother, which will bring the need to ll two management positions in a world where unemployment is nil is at the top of the list. This will bring lots of new training, and dening and renewing processes and systems. I will need answers, sometimes the questions, a fair amount of encouragement, and maybe a little commis-erating.
I nd that those that attend AST are a common interest clan that nd themselves honestly sharing the ins & outs of business by lessons learned and sharing resources we have found or created. I hope your company is sending at least one person to Advanced Shop Talk 19 in Minneapis this summer. The content and presenters will be all about what matters to the residential and small commercial painting contractor, for the purpose of improving your workplace in a condensed format. I promise, you'll come out a better person and a better businessperson.
I hope to see you there,
Randy Forno

Editor’s Note:Some of you may have heard part of my AST story before, but he’s the gist again. My rst AST was in Annapolis, MD back
when I rst joined the family painting business and was as green as you can get. I sat quietly soaking it all in and trying
not to give away what a novice I was. Fast forward to today, and I now have the honor of saying that I was once the President
of the Residential Forum, have presented enough times to get over my fear of public speaking, and have fged se amazing iendships, that as Doug stated as well, have seen me through the many ups and downs of working in the Residential Painting
Industry.
In short, AST is always on my calendar and I look forward to re-cnecting with everyone each year. While the height of
the busy season may seem like a bad time to step away from your business for a few days, it’s actually the perfect time to
reect and regroup and then nish the year out strong. And it doesn’t hurt that Tony knows how to throw a great party.
So whatever your reason for coming - be it for the education, the networking, the events, the friendships, or just to get
away and explore a new city - take two minutes right now and register. You’ll thank yourself come Sunday morning
when you’re headed home with a whole new arsenal of information to help your
business thrive.
See you in July, Suhaiba Neill
