May 28, 2017 The Ascension of the Lord Dear Parishioners and Friends:
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all na-tions, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to ob-serve all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” [Matthew 28:18-20]
This is the great commissioning by the Risen Christ. Pope Francis says that it is a call “to go out to the peripheries.” In other words, it is not enough to just be a Catholic. One must be a disciple of Jesus who wit-nesses to his love and shares in his mission to bring good news to those outside one’s comfort zone. This is the process of evangelization. Pope Francis is also fond of saying that the Church does not exist just for itself as a holiness club. Rather, it must move from maintenance to mission, from simply being focused on oneself to bringing God’s love to those who are in need.
This weekend we recognize a sister in Christ who has fulfilled her mission in Waycross and is de-parting this week for a new home in Statesboro. Nelda Ballagh has been a life-giving witness in her disciple-ship for many years at St. Joseph’s. We thank her for her ministry with us, as a bridge-builder between our English-speaking and the Spanish speaking communi-ties and as an associate with the Franciscan Missionary Sisters. Thank you, Nelda for your Spirit-filled wit-ness! God indeed is with you as you move to St. Mat-thew’s in Statesboro.
Questions for the week: Where do you car ry on the mission of Jesus? How do you teach others about Christ? What “periphery” have you been sent to in or-der to witness God’s love?

“Vayan, pues, y hagan discípulos de todas las naciones, bautizándolas en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, ensenándoles todo lo que yo les he mandado. Y sepan que Yo estaré siempre con ustedes, hasta el final de los tiempos.” [Mateo 28:18-20]
Este es el gran mandamiento de Cristo Resuci-tado. El Papa Francisco dice que es un llamado ä ir a las periferias”. en otras palabras, no es suficiente el ser católicos. Uno debe de ser discípulo de Jesús que da testimonio de su amor y comparte en su misión tra-yendo las buenas nuevas a aquellos afuera de nuestra zona confortable. Esto es un proceso de evangeliza-ción. Al Papa Francisco también le gusta decir que la Iglesia no existe solo para sí misma como un club di-vino. Más bien, debe moverse para mantener su mi-sión, de simplemente estar enfocado en nosotros mis-mos a traer el amor de Dios a aquellos que lo necesi-tan.
Este fin de semana reconocernos a una herma-na en Cristo que ha cumplido su misión en Waycross y esta mudándose esta semana a una nueva casa en Sta-tesboro. Nelda Ballagh ha sido una testigo que da vida en su discipulado por muchos años en San Joseph. Le damos las gracias por su ministerio con nosotros, como puente constructor ente las comunidades de los que ha-blan Inglés y los que hablan español y como una aso-ciada con las hermanas Misioneras Franciscanas. ¡Gracias, Nelda por un testimonio lleno del Espíritu! Dios está contigo al mudarte a San Mateo en Statesbo-ro.

O Holy one, show us how to nourish this commitment through faith formation, hospitality, and stewardship, so that through us your compassion may embrace the cross of all the needy, through Christ our Lord. The PRE Students would like to thank Knights of Columbus and Fr. Bob for sup-plying their Sunday morning breakfasts!
While you are on vacation this summer, PLEASE do not forget your parish! While we have fewer folks around, our expenses are higher because of the heat. Last July, our Util-ities amounted to $2,778; our parish assessment (tax to the diocese) $1,419; our pastor’s Health Insurance/Welfare etc. $2,708; our property insurance $2,816 – just to give you a few of the “normal bills.” So we pray that we might be “mindful stewards” and also just tighten our belts and have to do without some things that are not absolutely essential. Pray that it’s not the Air Conditioning!

Stations of the Cross Meditation Benches: There’s a quiet movement going on as people are enjoying the Sta-tions of the Cross. Families are purchasing “meditation benches” at Lowes for $54 each. You can see several now just outside the south side doors of the church. Check it out. Does your family want to contribute a prayer bench? Please turn in a copy of your receipt so that we can give you credit for it as a church contribution and tax deduc-tion.

RCIA – The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults –
will begin again on Tuesday evening, July 18, at 7:15 in the Parish Hall for all those who are interested in learning about the Catholic Faith. This Inquiry phase
does not require any necessary commitment to the Catholic Church, just a commitment to study its teach-ings, history, scriptures, and the spiritual formation

The New Catholic Answer Bible: NABRE. This is our parish favorite bible with RCIA Catechism inside
as well as the best translation. Leather bound with larger print, $35. See Barbara in the office.
A Suggestion for On-line Bible Studies: If you have not tried it, I would suggest that Lumina http://lumina.bible.org/is a wonderful site for indi-vidual Bible study. You can use several different translations of the Bible, and you simply go to the book you want to study, and the chapter, and scroll to the appropriate verses. On the right hand screen is a section with language translation and my favorite, Constable’s commentary. Dr. Constable is a professor emeritus of Bible Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, and he writes un-derstandable, clear commentary on the Bible, which is well referenced, and which has easy to use links to allow you to cross-check other vers-es. It has been very helpful for me, in conjunction with the US Conference of Catholic Bishops http://usccb.org/ daily Mass readings. -Adrienne Butler
