How the Mind of a Middle Schooler Works
Dear Families,
Thank you for attending our Ice Cream Social and Book Fair event. A HUGE thank you to
our PTO and Community Contributors for sponsoring this fun and educational event as
well! Mrs. Slough and Mr. Stoddard provided excellent overviews of school happenings
and upcoming noteworthy topics. Mr. Stoddard will post his power point online for your
review.
Congratulations to our students who participated in the Regional History Fair Wednesday
night. We have two winners who will be going on to the state competition. Way to go,
Hanna and Veronica!
Please take a moment to ask your child our student Mission Statements for Student
Success. Can he / she recite these personal mission statements and explain what they
mean to him / her?
Have a lovely weekend and rest up for the first round of FSA exams starting MONDAY. Our
students will perform exceedingly well, but do need to rest and eat a healthy and nutritious
breakfast.
Thank you for your continued support!

Mrs. Harrison

I can develop areas that matter to me.
I have the skills and confidence to over-come any obstacle.
I celebrate my success.
I believe I can accomplish my goals.

Wanted! New Kindergarten Students!
It’s time to get the word out in our community regarding kindergarten and new student registration for the 2016-
17 school year. We ask that all of our Patriot Oaks Academy parents share the news with neighbors who have
incoming kindergartners or students who will be new to Patriot Oaks for the coming school year. We want to
encourage as many parents as possible to come to the pre-registration dates shown below so that we can get a
jump start on our kindergarten student numbers for the 2016-17 school year. Please help us by telling
neighbors to visit the school website (http://www-poa.stjohns.k12.fl.us/) for our registration packet and
information. Documents can be brought in or dropped off at any of the registration dates and prior to school
starting. We appreciate your helping us get the word out!
Pre-Registration for the 2016-17 School Year
St. Johns County Schools will be holding pre-registration for entering kindergartners and new students. The reg-
istration dates are as follows:
Thursday, March 10 — 1 pm to 5 pm
Friday, April 8 — 9 am to 1 pm
Monday, May 9 — 1 pm to 5 pm
The purpose of the selected days is to help reduce the number of students that need to be enrolled in August for
the beginning of the 2016-17 school year. It also greatly helps us plan for the number of teachers needed for
the new school year.
Parents can start the registration process by bringing the following:
1. Proof of Residency – Three proofs of residency must be provided. These proofs must include a copy of the HUD-1
closing statement on your home or a current mortgage statement, a lease or rental agreement, and two other forms of resi-
dency documentation such as: a copy of your water/electric bill showing the parent/guardian’s name and address, a driver’s
license, vehicle registration, voter registration, and homeowner’s or renter’s insurance statement. Please note that P.O. box-
es are not acceptable as a proof of residency.
2. Student Information/Entry Packet – This is available at our website (http://www-poa.stjohns.k12.fl.us/) or it may be
picked up in our front office.
3. Birth Certificate – Must be original (we will make a copy for our records.)
4. Immunization Certificate – Must provide a Florida Immunization Certificate (HRS Form 680). This form can be obtained
from your private physician or the St. John’s Co. Health Department (825-5055). This form is mandatory for Kindergartners
or a first-time enrollment in a Florida school. Students who are transferring into our school district may be granted thirty days
to provide this document.
5. Proof of Physical Examination – Must be dated within one year prior to enrollment in school. Required for Kinder-
gartners or a first-time enrollment in a Florida school. Students transferring into our school district may be granted thirty
days to provide this document.
6. Social Security Number – Please bring original card if available; we will make a copy for our records
7. Custody Papers – Needed if parents are divorced
8. Final Report Card – If your child was previously enrolled in another school
** Kindergarten students must be 5 years of age on or before September 1, 2016
** First Grade students must be 6 years of age on or before September 1, 2016
Students can be registered during the spring or summer for the 2015-16 school year; however, parents are strongly encour-aged to register during the designated dates shown above so that our school can adequately plan and prepare for the new school year.
SUMMER MARINE SCIENCE PROGRAM INFORMATION
Applications for the summer Marine Science Program will be passed out by sci-ence teachers at all schools during the week of February 16th. Applications will be due back to science teachers by March 4th. Applications can also be downloaded at any time from the website prior to April 15 at http://www-grms.stjohns.k12.fl.us/ and click on the Marine Science link. The link also will have a complete day by day curriculum for each grade level, parent information, and a video from last year’s program. This summer program is available to all students currently in grades five through seven and has been sponsored by the school district since 1982. Three eight day sessions are held at Gamble Rogers Middle School with bus transportation provided. The dates for the three sessions this summer will be May 31st through June 9th, June 13
th through June 23rd, and June 27th
through July 8th. Small classes of 12-14 students are separated by grade level. All instructors in the program are St. Johns County School District teachers. The Marine Science Program is a carefully designed experience for responsible students who are interested in learning about our local marine environments. Learning is “hands on” in the field with students kayaking, canoeing, boating, hiking, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, SUP, etc. Specific grade levels activities and curriculum are attached to the applications and are also available from the website. More information about the program can be had by emailing John Gordon at [email protected].

NOTES FROM THE CHARGER CAFÉ
We have a lot of outstanding balances here in the Charger Café. If your child owes money from this point forward they will NOT be al-
lowed to purchase any a-la cart or extra items. I ask that you please check your child’s balance and pay any debt that is remaining. I also rec-ommend everyone signing up for a Paypams.com account just to be able to receive balance noti-fications as well as to be able to see what your child is being charged. I have and will continue
to email those families who owe money, but sometimes I am not able to get to everyone. Please contact me, if you would like to place a limit on any account, if you have questions or
concerns. I am here from 6:15 am to 2:15 pm.
Thanks! Katie

LOST AND FOUND
Parents, we are implementing a new system for
handling lost and found. Here are some important
steps you can take to help us with our abundance of
lost items.
1.) Please write your student’s name on all jackets,
coats, lunch boxes, etc. If there is a student’s name
on an item, we will locate the student and return their
lost item to them. Otherwise it is the student’s respon-
sibility to locate any lost items.
2.) Please have your student check for any lost items
several times a week as soon as items are lost.
At this time we have a lot of old lost and found items.
Starting the end of this week, all of these items will be
placed by the stage for students to go through during
their lunch. Parents may come to the school during
Extended Day hours (3:00 pm - 6:00 pm) to look for
items as well.
In 2 weeks, any items that are left over will be taken to
a local charity for distribution.
