PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I am writing this on Sunday afternoon, April 26th – a week before you actually read it. This is truly a week of uncertainty with the Governor’s new orders coming out, the County Judge’s mask wearing order and wondering how Church will fit into all of this. As I write, we are not sure what the Governor’s orders of re-opening will fill out in the practical realm. Last week a couple of staff members, a couple of liturgical ministers and I started to imagine what we could do to resume Masses. We know there are certitudes, such as social distancing, that must be forefront. The distance from the back of one pew to the next is right at three feet. So, we skip every other pew to give a distance of 6 feet between the person in front and the person behind. Now, we have to figure six feet to each side. BUT, what about a couple or a family. How do they factor into the equation? Well, if a family of four sit together, then the 6 foot distance starts with the last member of the family. With guidance of a well-trained Minister of Hospitality, we might we able to make that happen. But first, we will have to begin a new ministry … The Ministers of Temperature Taking. People who are ill or that have a fever would not be able to enter. Will we have people willing to make masks to give to people who come without one? If not, where do we buy them? It’s very clear that the order states, no mask, no entrance.

Now let us consider the time for Holy Communion. People will have to maintain that 6-foot distance between people while in procession. Hmm, ok …. Leave a pew between each person. Now comes the tricky part …. You cannot have two people walking in the same aisle at the same time because there’s no way to maintain that 6-foot requirement on either side of the persons since our aisle as 4 foot wide. That would mean a whole section at a time would have to receive Holy Communion before the next section. OK … keep going – starting with the section nearest the choir (call it section 1), we could distribute Holy Communion to all the odd number sections first and once those are complete, we could start with the even number sections. That procedure would ensure that people are not walking side by side in a 4-foot aisle. (Are you still with me?) Here comes the really tricky part.

How will people actually distribute and receive Holy Communion. One of the concerns is the safety of the communicant and minister while at the same time the other concern is the security of the Holy Eucharist. If people wear disposable gloves, particles of the Blessed Sacrament could stick to the gloves. That means they must be disposed of in a way that safeguards the Holy Eucharist; in other words, someone can’t just toss their gloves into the trash nor can they brush off the particles onto the floor. If the ministers are gloved, that’s fewer people wearing gloves and touching the Blessed Sacrament and a better control of what happens to the used gloves can be implemented. I heard in one diocese they are talking about using tongs to distribute Holy Communion and then following Holy Communion they would be purified as are the vessels. The ministers would wear gloves and use the tongs to take the Blessed Sacrament out of the vessel and place on the communicant’s hand. But, what about the person receiving Holy Communion? The consecrated host would have to be placed on the “naked” hand and people may still be fearful about not having their hands gloved.

So, if Holy Communion gets worked out, what about the dismissal? People come into the church in a scattered pattern, but at the dismissal everyone leaves together. How does one make sure that people follow proper social distancing while exiting the church? Do we dismiss row by row starting at opposite ends of the nave using specific doors when approaching the narthex? Crowd control anywhere can be complicated in normal situations; so, what about now? How do we keep people moving and not congregating in the narthex?

Thank you for allowing me to free think all of this with you to show you that re-opening is more complicated than what meets the eye. What we knew as normal will no longer be normal when we return. But whatever is developed also entails the participation of everyone who comes to Mass. There are a lot of “free thinkers” who will refuse to follow the established protocols either because they don’t agree to them or they may think they have a better way. Part of a proprietor’s responsibility is to ensure the safety of the people who come to the place of business. Similarly, our responsibility here at Mass would be to make sure that everyone arrives and leaves healthy. May the Holy Spirit enlighten us all!

Be assured of my prayers as well as those of Fr. Justin. May God keep us all safe.

With Easter Blessings of joy,

THIS WEEK’S READINGS THIS WEEK’S READING

Sunday, May 03, 2020 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER; GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY Follow the leader When we were kids, playing “follow the leader” was easy. One child was designated as the pattern to imitate, and we just did whatever they did. In these days of crisis, it can seem harder to tell who the designated leader is. Is it the president or the pope, the pastor or the medical expert? Do we do what our parents advised, or listen to the recommendations of trusted friends? What do we do when media experts disagree? If we call ourselves Christians, then Christ is the ultimate authority for our values and criteria. Make a verse of scripture your daily companion.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 2:14a, 36-41; 1 Peter 2:20b-25; John 10:1-10 (49). “For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.”

Monday, May 04, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY Stand your ground “The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger,” said Father Stanley Rother, and he didn’t, which made him a martyr in 1981 in civil war-torn Guatemala. Even though he knew his name was on a death list, this priest from Oklahoma stayed with the people he had been serving since 1968, during which time he built a farmer’s co-op, a school, a hospital, and a radio station. He was beatified in 2017. Learn more about this inspiration for faith in the book The Shepherd Who Didn’t Run.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 11:1-18; John 10:11-18 (279). “A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

Tuesday, May 05, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY Keep things in context Catholics celebrate 50 days of Easter with a special emphasis on the Gospel of John. But with the Gospel of John comes a particular concern. At Mass, we hear—amid the evangelist’s poetic prose—some jarring references to “the Jews.” Historically, such language sadly led to a legacy of hate and harm. With anti-Semitism making headlines again, look to the short Vatican II document called Nostra aetate. It honors the Jewish people as our faithful forebears, tapping a truth right out of John 10: Jesus was an observant. Honor our religious ancestors by learning more about them.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 11:19-26; John 10:22-30 (280). “Jesus walked about in the temple area.”

Wednesday, May 06, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY Follow the Light “This Little Light of Mine” has been young Christians’ joyful favorite for nearly a century. It has also been an anthem for civil and human rights movements. For people of faith, we who believe that Jesus has come into the world as light, the song serves as a directive to allow God’s light to shine

through the example of our lives. Reflect today on the example you have set during difficult times. Have you given into darkness and despair or served as a beacon of hope and support for those around you?

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 12:24—13:5a; John 12:44-50 (281). “I have come into the world as light, to keep anyone who believes in me from remaining in the dark.”

Thursday, May 07, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY A masquerade to take seriously In today’s gospel Jesus says, “Whoever receives the one I send, receives me.” It is in keeping with our tradition to see the poor, the migrant, the refugee as sent by God to stretch our hearts and open us to the Good News. Mother Teresa often referred to seeing Jesus “in the distressing disguise of the poor.” Indeed, how distressing it is to see the suffering being endured by those with the least. Take a step today to “receive” Jesus in the disguise of the poor.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 13:13-25; John 13:16-20 (282). “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

Friday, May 08, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY Youthful mystic Imagine growing up with a saint in your hometown! New Jersey-native Teresa Demjanovich, honored today, was like many young people with responsibility for caring for aging parents while also getting an education and a job. She then became a religious sister but died just two years later at age 26. Known as a prayerful, holy woman, Teresa was deeply spiritual and considered a mystic. “Our heart is the compass that magnetically follows the north star of desire,” Teresa wrote. “To locate my treasure I have but to unearth the lodging of my desires.” As you pray this day, consider how God is leading you through your heart and desires.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 13:26-33; John 14:1-6 (283). “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me.”

Saturday, May 09, 2020 EASTER WEEKDAY Light a fuse! Peter Maurin, who founded the Catholic Worker movement with Dorothy Day, was born on this day in 1877. He longed for a world where it would be easier for people to be good to each other. While he was the visionary, Day translated his ideals of justice into practical actions: a newspaper, houses of hospitality, and farms. He found “dynamite” in the gospels, which could solve the problems of society if someone would “blow the lid off.” Day lit the fuse, and their flame continues today in Catholic Worker houses.

TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 13:44-52; John 14:7-14 (284). “The one who believes in me . . . will do greater works than these.”

LITURGY

Prayer for Vocations

O loving and gracious God, Father of all, you bless your people in every time and season and provide for their needs through your providential care. Your Church is continually in need of priests, deacons, sisters and brothers to offer themselves in the service of the gospel by lives of dedicated love. Open the hearts of your sons and daughters to listen to your call in their lives. Give them the gift of understanding to discern your invitation to serve you and your Church. Give them the gift of courage to follow your call. May they have the spirit of young Samuel who found fulfillment in his life when he said to you, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAYMay 3, 2020

God Bless our Priests

EASTER TIMEToday, Good Shepherd Sunday, the Church invites us to pray for priests and for those you whom God is calling to the priesthood.

A Prayer for Priests by John Cardinal O'Connor, March 1995.

Lord Jesus, we your people pray to You for our priests. You have given them to us for OUR needs. We pray for them in THEIR needs. We know that You have made them priests in the likeness of your own priesthood. You have consecrated them, set them aside, anointed them, filled them with the Holy Spirit, appointed them to teach, to preach, to minister, to console, to forgive, and to feed us with Your Body and Blood.Yet we know, too, that they are one with us and share our human weak-nesses. We know too that they are tempted to sin and discouragement, as are we, needing to be ministered to, as do we, to be consoled and forgiven, as do we. Indeed, we thank You for choosing them from among us, so that they understand us as we understand them, suffer with us and rejoice with us, worry with us and trust with us, share our beings, our lives, our faith. We ask that You give them this day the gift You gave Your chosen ones on the way to Emmaus: Your presence in their hearts, Your holiness in their souls, Your joy in their spirits. And let them see You face to face in the breaking of the Eucharistic Bread. We pray to You, O Lord, with Mary, the mother of priests, for Your priests and for ours. Amen.

Haz
