we are always climbing, wanting more. We tend to put on the blinders and completely disregard the Au-thor of Life and the One who puts everything in mo-tion and gives us life and breath. Children model themselves after their parents. After all, children are around their parents the most. Parents are the disci-plinarians, the setters of the schedule and their child’s greatest support and cheering section. They are there to comfort, encourage and set an example. Believe it or not, children learn many patterns of be-havior from their parents and hang onto those pat-terns throughout their lives. I’m a living example of that! If parents are not modeling the importance of attending holy Mass and learning about our faith, children will not see it as something which is im-portant, and with each generation that follows, they become once more removed.

This weekend, I invite all parents to really ex-amine how you look at our faith, and how you teach the faith to your children. Is the faith something you value? Is it set above all other things, or is it just an-other thing to fit into the calendar? Do you talk to your children about the faith? Do you help your chil-dren integrate the faith into the many complex expe-riences they encounter in this life? The Church stands as a partner with you to deepen and expand what is brought into the home. I liken it to a child be-ginning with piano lessons. They will not excel in their mastery of the piano if they don’t spend some time working at it outside the classroom. If they only touch the piano when they come in for lessons, they’ll grow frustrated because the teacher will de-mand more from them, and they cannot meet those demands by simply playing at practice time. It’s the same way with our faith. The real learning and em-bracing of the faith occurs in the home. We can build upon the foundation that is laid out in the home, but if the only time children experience the beauty of Christ and the Church is when they’re physically on our campus, they’re only being exposed to it for a very short time, and they’re not making the connec-tion of how faith and life go hand in hand.

We all need to be about the work of embrac-ing our faith and learning about the wisdom that flows from what the Church teaches. We can easily form opinions and truths based on what the world shows us, and 99% of the time, those opinions are misguided. Our truth comes from Christ, not the world, and as we learn more about our faith, we seek the truth from Christ Himself, and from His Church. That is what fulfills us and helps keep our salvation before us in all we say and do.

Our sympathies are extended to the families of Marie Geiger and Audrey Mausolf, both of whom died recently. May the Lord grant them peace and joy in the glory of His kingdom.

Peace,

Fr. Michael

W E L C O M E T O T H E P A R I S H O F S T . B E R N A R D ! Dear Friends,

It is with great joy that we welcome our spiritual father, Bish-op Donald Hying, to our parish this weekend. Bishop Hying has made it his quest to visit every parish in the Diocese in the first year of his episcopate, and he is well on his way to achieving that. We’re grate-ful to Bishop Hying for being with

us this weekend and celebrating holy Mass for us. It’s always a beautiful witness to the faith when the bishop is present with us, as he is the visible sign of our communion with the universal Church - most especially, the Holy Father. We continue to keep Bishop Hying in our prayers, and ask the Holy Spirit to continue to guide him in bringing our Diocese closer to the Father.

This weekend is also Catechetical Sunday - a day set aside to pray for those entrusted with teaching the faith. When couples are married in the Church, they complete what’s called a pre-nuptial investigation, which assures that both parties are canonically free from any impediments and are fully able to enter into marriage. One of the questions asked of the couple is if they will take responsibility for the education of their offspring. As I reflect back on my years growing up, faith formation was a fami-ly affair. I remember specifically my preparation for First Holy Communion. There was time together in the classroom, but there was also a portion of the preparation which involved my mom and dad. All three of us would sit down at the kitchen table to-gether and work on lessons. It was a time to not only learn, but to ask questions and to share the faith of the Church together. I learned a lot from those times, but I think my mom and dad learned quite a bit, too! I really enjoyed those times togeth-er with them - it was a wonderful opportunity to talk about the faith together as a family.

I fear, friends, that these kinds of encounters are few and far between. The world of 2019 is far more complicated than the world of 1985, that’s for sure! Instead of being life-giving and something we joyfully embrace, our faith has become just another thing that vies for our time. For so many, the thought of catechesis and learning more about the faith we believe in and profess is not one which evokes joy and passion. We place far greater value on athletics, extracurricular activities and other ex-ternal “stuff” that we somehow think is more im-portant. For so many parents, it’s about allowing their child to shine and to build up their resume and their experience so they can get into a good college and get a good job. There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with this, but the last time I checked, the Lord isn’t basing salvation on whether or not you make more than $100k per year or you can attain a good average at shooting three-pointers during a basket-ball game. There is never a feeling of satisfaction -

We are now accepting registrations on the parish’s new communications platform, FlockNote. Those of you who receive electronic communication from the parish should have received an email this past week inviting you to sign up. Please visit http://sbmsn.flocknote.com and fill

in the needed information. You can also register via your mobile telephone by sending the letters “sb” (without the quotes) to 84576. You’ll receive a response link to complete your registration. During the registration process, you’ll have an opportunity to join different announcement groups for ministries and parish groups that you’re a part of (for example, Eucharistic Ministers, Adult Choir, etc.) Be assured that we won’t “take advantage” of this opportunity and send tons of messages to your phones or email addresses. We’ll communicate needed information when it’s needed. If you’d rather have the parish sign you up, we’re happy to help with that. Please call Fr. Michael or send him an email ([email protected]) and include your name, email address and a mobile telephone number (if you have one). Thanks for signing up as we move over to this new communication platform!

This weekend of September 14 and 15, volunteers from our St. Vincent de Paul Conference will be handing out bags for the collection of donations after all Masses. We are looking for clothing, furniture and household items that are in clean, working condition and are suitable for resale in our stores.

Please bring the filled bags (or any other bags or boxes) of donated items back to church the following weekend, Sep-tember 21 and 22. There will be a trailer placed in the parking lot to collect your items. Your generous donation provides direct assistance to those in need. Donations purchased from the stores support about half the overall cost of the services St. Vincent de Paul provides in Dane County, including the food pantry, free pharmacy, housing programs and vouchers for free clothing, furni-ture and household basics for people living with low incomes. Any unsold items are given another chance at our Dig & Save outlet or responsibly recycled. Thank You!

SVdP Needs Your Donations

More Ushers Needed We are in need of additional ushers for week-end Masses. We are looking for one additional usher for the 4:30pm Mass and three ushers for the 10:00am Mass. Ushers work together as a team and scheduled for one month (4 weeks at a time), rotating every three months. Please consider this important opportunity to

serve our parish! Please call or email the parish office ([email protected]) if you are interested in helping.

Attention Liturgical Ministers Please make sure to respond to the mailing that was sent to you so we can update the contact lists for the upcoming ministry schedules. If you haven’t signed up for the FlockNote platform yet, please do so (instructions in this weekend’s bulletin). Thanks for your assistance as we prepare for the next set

of ministry schedules.
