Turner’s House in Twickenham has been closed for extensive restoration work and things seem to be progressing well. Here is an extract from a bulletin from Catherine Parry-

Wingfield the Chairman, of Turner’s House Trust. “The beginning of a New Year marks a considerable change in the pace of work at Sandycombe. The roofs are complete, Welsh slate fitted in a traditional manner. Much of the cleaning and repairing of the brickwork has now been done by skilled bricklayers, including a heritage apprentice. It is hoped that the scaffold will be dismantled in January, as the work begins to focus on the interior. A great deal of preparatory work has been done for putting in underfloor heating, which will be music to the ears of the volunteers who valiantly wrapped up against the cold in the past. Essential services are also being installed, as discreetly as possible. We know that Turner relied for water on a well on the corner of his plot of land, but times have moved on. Conservation on the laylight above the stairs has been expertly carried out by Holy Well Glass, and is now back in place. This handsome feature is now unrecognisable from the grubby glass across which squirrels used to scamper. The design team is now moving forward on presenting the interior of the building. We have also made some significant advances in looking after the future of Turner’s House. Three new trustees have been appointed. We have also appointed a House Director, Lucy Thompson. “ I am sure that you are looking forward to the time when the work is finished and we can visit there.

Two stalwart volunteers have given many hours to support Arts Richmond and have also enjoyed attending many of the events that Arts Richmond has publicised. Here are some facts about these lovely ladies.

Joan Heath has been volunteering for Arts Richmond for over 40 years and remembers that it has been based in about 6 different venues. At one time she was vice-chair and has helped the organisation in various ways. More recently she has been a reliable member of the team which puts the newsletters and leaflets into envelopes ready for the monthly mail out. She was brought up in Staffordshire in a family where volunteering was a natural thing to do. She enjoys being a part of Arts Richmond because it gives her contact with people who are interested in the arts. She particularly enjoys going to the music and drama events.

Zeena Clark has been volunteering for over 15 years. She was invited to produce the labels for the monthly mail out and now joins the team to fill the many envelopes with the interesting newsletter and leaflets and enjoys the camaraderie of that activity. She likes the Arts Richmond trips to the theatre, concerts and is a great fan of the holidays to interesting places.

An exciting museum will soon be opening at 1 - 3 Richmond Road, Twickenham. It is the Eel Pie Island Museum and it will display photos and facts about this famous island and also a mural painted by local artist Clare Box. The hard-working organisers hope that it will open in early 2017 so keep an eye on local newspapers etc. to see when we can enjoy this new facility.
