REFERENCE LIST

A reference list should be separate from your resume with a least 3-5 persons listed. It is recommended that you contact all persons on the list to discuss with them your career objectives and possibly send them a copy of your resume. This will give them an idea of what kind of employers may be contacting them and what they can be prepared to say on your behalf.

Choose references that can speak highly of your abilities and talents, work ethic, and people skills. Getting along with people and being a team player is extremely important to managers in any work environment today. Be sure to ask permission from the people you are choosing as references. You want to make sure they will give you a good reference (if not, find a different reference). They also need to have time to prepare for what they want to say for a reference check.

TIPS:

Ask permission to use someone as a reference. Notify references of your job search if you haven’t talked with them for a while. Use the same font and header as your resume.

Good References:

Current or previous employers/supervisors Counselors or advisors Instructors/professors Volunteer coordinators Mentors or coaches Former co-workers

Don’t:

Use family members, partners, or friends as references.

Note: It is ok to use family members or friends if you were an employee working

for them; i.e. family owned business, etc.

Don’t list references on your resume or say “references available upon request”.
