Or stop by the Art League and pick up the JULY–DECEMBER Class Catalog. Happy FALL! As you read this, The 2021 Big Draw Festival DE is underway! To clarify, yes, there have been changes in the plans. What started out as free art activities in each of the four city wards and a final big event in Bicentennial Park, was altered due to Covid increases, particularly among children. In the interest of protecting the health of our community, our volunteers, children and families, the committee went to Plan B in early September. With three weeks to go before the first event, the steering committee led by Rosemary Connelly, developed a packet of art supplies and ideas, created examples of sea creatures made from recycled materials, and changed the marketing materials—posters, banners, press releases, and flyers. That is the value of being surrounded by right-brained artists—cre- ative problem-solving! And when a plan comes together, we rejoice! Make sure to visit the Farmers Market on October 30 and participate or cheer on the Costume Parade, led by the Queen of the Sea (Rosemary Connelly)! For all the details on the parade and transforming the Art League, see page 3. In other news, the Board of Directors has approved a Strategic Plan for 2021, focusing on how we interact with the community— assessing the needs of non-members, marketing, recruiting and recognizing volunteers, and fundraising with DoMore 24, a 24-hour fund drive in March 2022. Put on your Imagination Hat, gather up cardboard and materials going into the trash or recycle bins, plus anything else you have around the house (glitter!), and create your sea creatures! Make real creatures—fish, dolphin, whale, octopus, horseshoe crab—or create one completely out of your imagination, like King Neptune’s Crown (left) or a mermaid’s tail! Bring your creatures to the Art League from Oct. 1 through 31. We’ll hang or place them around the gallery to create our “Under the Sea” World!

You can see Neptune’s Crown at the Art League

SAVE THE DATE! MARCH 26 & 27, 2022International artist Pat Southern-Pearce is returning with “EXPECT the UNEXPECTED!” A fun, rather different background-first approach. Bring energy to your sketches, with textures, zing, subtleties, and the occasional surprise pop of color where you’d least expect it. A joy to do and drawings that sing! We’ll be playing with colored inks, salt, palette knives, brushes, and lots of water. Whilst these dry, we’ll skill-build on backgrounds I’ve prepared for you: collecting snapshot details, studying shapes and colors, drawing on top, extending, covering up, layering, and leaving surprises just because you love ‘em…and why not!

Each day we’ll have a throw down, a sharing of what’s been done, and mini-teaching demos. You’ll have such memories to take away, a folder of handouts, lots of backgrounds to carry on with back home, a happy smile, and confidence. Can’t wait to be back in Delaware again. It was wonderful last time. Do join us! Pat

DON’T KNOW WHAT CAN AND CANNOT BE RECYCLED??It can be confusing but there is a great website that will help you figure it out! Bookmark https://recyclopedia.org/de/state, plug in your location, and up pops all you need to know! You can also share this with anyone as it covers the US, though not all locations are loaded yet. Recyclers will thank you for making their job a little easier and not having to throw out truckloads of material because they are contaminated with non-recyclables.

THE SUPPLY TRADEA past member is moving on… If you are interested in fabric dying supplies, most from Dharma Trading, contact Paula Werme. Most are fiber reactive dyes that work well on cotton and other natural fabrics, but there may be a few containers of dye for synthetics. Dharma Trading has LOTS of directions on their web site. Please email Paula directly at [email protected] if interested!

REMINDER! Starting in October you will be required to dial 302 area code for all Delaware phone numbers.
