Oyster Yachts has issued a statement explaining the causes of the

keel failure of Polina Star, an extended Oyster 825, which lost its keel

and sank off the coast of Spain in July.

The statement points to a failure of the over lamination of joints

between the matrix and keel web due to poor laminating.

The official statement says: The internal structure in the engine room

space above the keel on the first of the Oyster 825s (moulded in2012) used a fore and aft and transverse matrix of structural beams

and webs down in to the stub keel structure shown in blue in the

drawings. This is not unusual and is used by many other volume and

quality yacht manufacturers.

This matrix provides structural strength, and is connected to webs

under the matrix with secondary laminations shown simplistically

as vertical lines in the second drawing. The matrix was moulded

separately from the main hull and installed in two halves, port side

and starboard side, joined in the middle directly above the webs in

the stub keel, and which then created an inverted T-joint shown in

yellow. The lead bulb keel bolts to the base of the stub keel as shown.

Keel structure Oyster 825 Polina Star

All of the parts of the matrix and the webs within the stub keel were

designed to be laminated robustly into the inside of the hull moulding.

This manufacturing process of moulding structure off the hull and

then laminating or glueing into the hull is a common process across

the industry from volume manufacturers to specialised one-off

custom or high-tech superyachts but it requires careful work during

the build up of the laminations. It is a process used mainly to speed

up the moulding operations. The assembly of the structure above the

keel area on the Oyster 825 thus relied on laminating 6 main

component parts the port and starboard halves of the matrix and

the 4 webs down into the stub keel.

Our investigations of Oyster 825-01 and 03 which between them

had sailed 20,000 miles, found small cracks at the outer ends of the

horizontal joint between the matrix and the webs (marked A on the

drawing). This suggested that the secondary over-lamination of these

joints was unsound and we investigated invasively by cutting samples

of the critical areas. We found extensive areas of poor laminating in

the secondary structure supporting these T-joints.

To address this, we removed all of the matrix and web structure

above the stub keel of Oyster 825-01, 03 and 04, re-building this key

area in carbon fibre and epoxy resin and, importantly, making these

parts in single pieces without the T-joint. For all subsequent Oyster

825s the inner structure of the matrix and webs is constructed as a

homogeneous part of moulding the hull itself i.e. the process of

moulding some parts off the boat and then laminating these into the

hull has been stopped and will not be done again. All Oyster 825s are

now being built in the same well proven ways as the rest of the 800+Oysters built over the past 40 years and all other Oysters currently in

build.

Polina Star III, Oyster 825-02, was constructed in the same manner

as Oyster 825s 01, 03 and 04 and it appears from inspection of the

wreck and photographic evidence that on this yacht the T-joints

described above failed, with the result that the keel loads were

transferred away from the matrix structure and onto the hull skin,

leading to catastrophic failure. We have expressed our sincere regret

for this failure to the owner of Polina Star III and are in the process of

addressing questions of liability.

Polina Star III).

The yacht was on its way to the Spanish port of Alicante and was five

miles offshore from Torrevieja when the keel detached and the yacht

capsized and then inverted. The skipper and four crew managed to

swim to liferafts and were rescued. The capsize and inversion

happened in six minutes.

The hull of Polina Star was investigated by divers in July 2015

We will have a full and detailed investigation into the circumstances

and reasons for the keel failure in our next issue.
