Oxo-Biodegradable TechnologyPlastic is fantastic when it is degradable

Plastic is strong, durable, versatile, lightweight, safe and inexpensive. It is made from a by-product of oil refining which would otherwise be wasted, so nobody is importing oil to make plastic products.

However, the problem identified by governments and NGOs around the world is that plastic does last rather too long if it gets into the environment and especially in the oceans.

Symphony from UK has found the answer to this problem. d2w® additive put into the plastic at the extrusion stage will make the finished product "oxo-biodegradable" so that it will degrade and disappear in a short timescale, leaving no fragments, no methane and no harmful residues.

Degradability is not a disposal option - you can still re-use and recycle - it is low cost insurance against the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment.

There is little or no on-cost, because d2w® environmentally-responsible plastic products are made with the same machinery and workforce as ordinary plastic and there is no need to change suppliers.

Certification of d2w® Additive

d2w® is an oxo-biodegradable additive that renders conventional polyole�n oxo-biodegradable

Oxo-Biodegradation; is de�ned as 〝Degradation identi�ed as resulting from oxidative and cell-mediated phenomena, either simultaneously or successively.〞 (source : - 〝Terminology in the �eld of degradable and biodegradable Polymers and Plastics〞CEN TC 249/ WG 9).

Polyole�n products made with d2w® additive will decompose in the presence of oxygen, into CO2, water, mineral salts and biomass

No harmful residues result from the total degradation of the additive. The Ecotoxicity section of EN 13432, and Tier 3 of ASTM 6954-04 require that no harmful residues occur – this has been veri�ed for d2w®. Evidence; OWS Report MST-4/1-d2wb&d2wc.

Degradation has been proved in accordance with the requirements of ASTM 6954-04 Tier 1 by passing ASTM 5510 Degradation Standard. Evidence : RAPRA Report 46095.

The ability of d2w® to comply with the biotic (Biodegradation) Tier 2 of ASTM 6954-04 has been dem-onstrated by the loss of molar mass achieved after degradation. Evidence : RAPRA Report 46303

The additive is safe for direct food contact according to the requirements of 2002/72/EC regulations for Direct Food Contact materials. Evidence : - RAPRA report 46137. It is however the responsibility of the manufacturers of products intended for food-contact to ensure that any other materials incorpo-rated by them comply with this standard.

Polymer products made with d2w® can comply with the EU Packaging Waste Directive 92/64/EC Essential Requirements Annex II.
