OXFORD SKI AND SNOWBOARD CLUB 2020

When: 2020 Ski and Snowboard season. January 10,17,24,31, February 7, 14 and if any

cancelations we add on Feb 21, 28

What: Our club offers low cost rates for all interested people from ages 8 (in 3rd graders) to adult.

Our club is open to all that live in the town of Oxford and surrounding areas. We ski or snowboard

for 6 consecutive Friday nights; from 4pm- 10:30pm- departing and returning from the Oxford

Central School. Bus transportation is included in your package.

Where: Lessons and Rentals are available through Shawnee Mountain.

Who: All members must be at least age 8 (in 3rd grade) in order to ski/board alone. Anyone

wishing to start before that age MUST be accompanied by their parent/guardian at all times and are

welcomed to join our club.

We have chaperones that accompany the kids throughout the evening. Whether it's thru the rental

process, lessons, meal times or on the mountain, rest assure that we go out of our way to make sure

your child is safe and well cared for. (Chaperone numbers depend on the size of the group.)

Why: Because it's fun & a great way to be with your friends and learn how to ski or snowboard and a

great sport that will stay with you for a lifetime!

How: ALL REGISTRATION IS DONE ON LINE (site will be active in November) Attached is a rate sheet

to give you an idea of how much of a cost is involved depending on which package you select. The

Oxford Youth Association registration fee of $55.00 PLUS a $57.00 processing fee= $55.00 total WILL

BE included and paid directly to Shawnee when you register. This amount is used to pay for the bus

transportation to and from the mountain for 6 weeks.

Oxford Ski & Snowboard Club Policies

-The Club is open to everyone 9yrs old (in 3rd grade) and up. This includes adults, family and friends.

Children 8 yrs. and younger may join but must be accompanied by a parent/ legal guardian at all times.

-We ski/board on Friday evenings starting January 10, 2020 for 6 consecutive weeks. If there are cancellations

due to weather, we add on from the last scheduled trip. IF SCHOOL IS CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW, WE MAY STILL GO SO STAY TUNED FOR MY UPDATES via e-mail.

-We leave from the Oxford Central School at exactly 4:00pm and return approximately 10:30pm. (Please have

transportation waiting.)

-Lessons (5 pack) are mandatory for all 1st timers and we suggest a refresher course (3 pack) for all 2nd year

returnees. -Jackets and gloves (water-proof, not fabric mittens) are a must! Sweatshirts are not considered

jackets. Any child not wearing appropriate attire will not be allowed on the mountain!

Helmets are mandatory!

-Please send your children with extras; hats, gloves, socks.

-Food is expensive in the lodge. It is suggested that each child pack a sandwich/dinner. You can purchase an

add on DMP (Discount Meal Plan) which is explained on the next page (TWO NEW PROGRAM ADD-ONS) for

only $40 for 5 meal vouchers.

-Shawnee policy stipulates that only one absentee voucher is issued per member per season. Please make

every effort to attend each trip.

-Refunds are only issued with a medical excuse up to the 2nd trip.

How we run the program:

We all meet in the OCS front parking lot at 3:30/3:45 pm

The bus leaves OCS exactly at 4:00 pm on Fridays and we arrive at Shawnee around 4:30 pm.

The children are escorted to and thru the rental area where they are helped by chaperones in obtaining their equipment and putting it on.

From there they go directly to the lesson area with their assigned chaperone to their designated

lessons at 5:00/5:15.

Lesson usually last for 45 min- 1 hour.

They are then picked up by their chaperones and taken to our designated seating area in the upstairs Hope Lodge where they meet up with the group and have their dinner.

Afterwards they are taken to the bunny hill area where we try to reinforce what they learned in their

lessons.

Please be aware that the most chaperones are NOT qualified instructors, but we do all try to offer our knowledge and skills to the children to help them along.

Some more advanced skiers or boarders are in upper level groups and a chaperone takes them on the lift or they ski/board with a buddy if they are experienced.

Older ski or boarders are allowed to ski or snowboard with a buddy/group but must stay together.

By the 4th trip, we have found that the children have acquired the necessary skills to maneuver the mountain.

The chaperones will take them up to the top of the mountain and this is up to the discretion of the

chaperones if they feel the child is ready. We start to pack up around 9:00 pm and return to the bus

by 9:30 pm. We arrive back at OCS by 10:00 pm. If for any chance we are running late or foresee

coming home early an email will be sent so please look out for emails the night of. Also be advised

that wi-fi at Shawnee is not always the best and although I will do the best to communicate with parents our first priority is the children and making sure everyone is back on the bus an accounted

for.

Common questions and answers for the OYA ski/snowboard club 2019:

1. How old does my child have to be to join? Children of any age can join, but if they are under the age of 8 (or 3rd grade), they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian adult at all times.

2. Do I have to know how to ski/board to join? NO! Shawnee Mountain offers an extensive

learning program in both ski and board to people of all ages and abilities.

3. How do I know that my child will be safe if I send him/her on their own? As with any OYA

sponsored event/club, there will be chaperones available at all times. Whether they are in their lessons, on the mountain or in the lodge. We also stress the importance of the buddy system to

all members.

4. Can anyone join or is this restricted to Oxford OYA members only? NO! We open this club to anyone at any age. We have many high school children and people from other towns participate.

There are also many families that join. Parents, siblings, cousins, etc.

5. Do I have to buy the equipment myself? NO! If you do not have your own, you may rent from

Shawnee or through any sporting good shop for the season.

6. Does the OYA mandate helmet wearing? YES! You can rent them through Shawnee with their rental package at an extra fee (please check the box on the rental forms.) or buy them through

Shawnee for the season at a discounted rate of $65.00. The GIRO ski/snowboard helmets they

offer are a quality helmet at a great price and they are adjustable so you can get a few seasons

out of them. It's a great investment and worth keeping your children safe from concussions.

7. When do they go? We run the program for 6 consecutive weeks starting on January e, 2014. We

leave the school at exactly 4:00pm and return around 10:30pm on Friday evenings. We do cancel

due to inclement weather. If this should occur, we then add on to the last scheduled date;

tentatively, February 7th, until all 6 trips are completed. If school is cancelled, then the trip is canceled.

8. My child has a board and though they have never taken formal lessons or been on a real

mountain, they do ok. Do they have to take the lessons? YES! The boards you buy at say Wal-Mart and use on a sleigh riding hill are not the same as on a REAL mountain! Your child not only

needs to learn basic control and movement of the board, but they also learn about mountain safety and courtesy!

9. This is my child’s second season; do they have to take lessons again? I stress the 3 lesson

package for 2nd year returns. Not only does this continue their knowledge of the equipment, but

also reinforces what they may have forgotten and they move to the higher levels of the lesson

program with experienced instructors.

10. Can I as a parent accompany my child on these trips? YES! But you will have to transport

yourself.

We very rarely have room on the bus for anyone other than the group members. Please do ask in advance if you do need a ride. Many parents caravan in groups. Hitch a ride!

11. How much money should I send my child with? That is always a question I leave up to the

parent. There is food for dinner and a video arcade on site. I do stress that it is EXPENSIVE and to save some money that all children pack a dinner. Shawnee does offer a new DMP (Discount meal

plan). For only $54 you get (6) meal vouchers, which is a great deal!

12. What if it is too cold to go? This does not happen! This is a winter sport and we go in the cold! As long as your child dresses appropriately, they will be ok. We have gone in 0 degree weather.

We monitor the children and make sure they continually come in and warm up and not wearing

wet clothing. I ask everyone to bring extra gloves, hats, face masks so that they can replace them

if needed. They must dress in layers. It's important to have the right equipment. Cheap gloves

will NOT keep their hands warm. Spend the extra money and buy quality, waterproof gloves. KNIT gloves and sweatshirts alone are not considered appropriate attire for this sport and they

will not be allowed on the mountain with them!

13. Electronic Devices? I stress NOT to bring them on the mountain! We know most can’t live without their phones so I leave that up to the discretion of the parents, but we are not

responsible for lost, wet or stolen items. We have had items stolen or lost in the past. I understand that cell phones are now a necessity in this day and age and you want your child to be

able to be in touch with you. An option is to have the lodge sitter watch them for them. Some

options are lockers at an added cost. Having them in their pockets causes 2 problems: 1- if they

fall, they can break and 2- they can easily lose them! IPods, I Pads, MP3 players, play station

portables; laptops etc. are to be left at home! This is a great time for them to interact and talk

with each other and be outdoors and the purpose of this club. Let’s try to disconnect for one night! The Oxford Ski & Snowboard club is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen items!

14. How do I know that my beginner child will not sneak on the mountain not knowing what to do?

Each chair lift has an operator that monitors the children as they get on the chairs. They do check

their lesson badges and will not allow them access unless they reach a certain point in their

lessons!

15. All money is paid on line directly to Shawnee.

Please remember that a $52.00 fee has been added to each package. This will cover the OYA

registration cost to pay $50 for the bus and a $2 for Shawnee’s processing fee

The Oxford Ski & Snowboard club will not tolerate the use of Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco and Profanity. As a

group we want to showcase the best qualities of our members. If any member is caught breaking the above,

they will automatically surrender their lift badges for the remaining of the season and no refunds will be given. We expect members to conduct themselves in a proper manner and show respect to all members. Bus

Acceptance to purchase your ticket on the Shawnee website or through the Oxford Ski & Snowboard club constitutes a

contract. The conditions of the contract are set forth below on your ticket and will prevent or restrict your ability to sue Ski

Shawnee, Inc. or Oxford Ski & Snowboard club.

Skiing, boarding, snow tubing and other on-snow sports, including the use of lifts, are dangerous sports with inherent and

other risks. These risks include but are not limited to rocks, trees and other forms of forest growth or debris (above or below

the surface), bare spots, lift towers, utility lines, poles and guy wires, snowmaking equipment and component parts, trail

fences and control nets and the absence of such fences and nets, and other forms of natural or man-made obstacles on

and/or off designated trails, as well as collisions with equipment, vehicles, obstacles or other participants, trail conditions

vary constantly because of weather changes and skier use. These are some of the risks of skiing, boarding and snow

tubing. All of the inherent and other risks of skiing, boarding and snow tubing present the risk of serious and/or fatal injury.

IN CONSIDERATION OF USING SKI SHAWNEE, INC.'S FACILITIES, THE PURCHASER OR USER OF THEIR TICKET

AGREES TO ACCEPT THE RISKS OF SKIING, SNOWBOARDING AND SNOWTUBING AND AGREES NOT TO SUE SKI

SHAWNEE, INC., Oxford Ski & Snowboard club or Shawnee EMPLOYEES IF HURT WHILE PARTICIPATING IN THE

ACTIVIITY OR USING THE FACILITIES EVEN IF I CONTEND THAT SUCH INJURIES ARE THE RESULT OF

NEGLIGENCE, INCLUDING GROSS NEGLIGENCE, OR ANY OTHER IMPROPER CONDUCT FOR WHICH A RELEASE

IS NOT CONTRARY TO PUBLIC POLICY, ON THE PART OF SKI SHAWNEE, INC.,IT'S AGENTS OR EMPLOYEES.

litigated exclusively in the Court of Common Pleas of Monroe County or the United States District Court for the Middle

HOW TO SIZE & FIT A GIRO HELMET To determine your correct size, wrap a soft measuring tape/tailor’s tape around your head, just above your

eyebrows. The tape should be placed comfortably around your head and not too snug. Make sure you measure

the largest part of your head.

If you fall between two sizes, you should select the larger size.

The “In-Form” fit system used in the Bevel lets you dial-in your fit for maximum comfort.
