2 MARKS FOR EACH CORRECT ANSWER TOTAL / 12

Perhaps you’ve seen the 2005 film The War of theWorlds. It tells the story of an attack on the Earth byaliens from Mars, and it stars Tom Cruise. But thestory The War of the Worlds is much older than theTom Cruise film.• The British writer H.G. Wells wrote The War of

the Worlds in 1898. It was one of the firstscience fiction books. In the story, the aliensattacked Britain. They destroyed a lot of Britishcities, including London.

• Four decades later, an American actor anddirector called Orson Welles used HG Wells’story for a radio play. The start of the play waslike an ordinary radio music programme, but theend was like a news report. In the play, reportersdescribed a terrible attack by aliens. Only onereporter survived. At the end of the play, he wasalone on the top of a building. Many listenerspanicked because they thought that the playwas a real news report. They grabbed clothesand money and ran into the streets. They wantedto escape the aliens.

• In 1952, Hollywood made the first film called The War of the Worlds. In this film, aliensattacked California.

• There was also a musical version of The War ofthe Worlds. Jeff Wayne, an American from NewYork, wrote the music for a double album in1978. It tells the story in words and music. Youcan still buy the album on CD today.

2 MARKS FOR EACH CORRECT ANSWER TOTAL / 12

Polar bears live around the Arctic Ocean, inAlaska, northern Canada and Russia. They’rebeautiful wild animals, and they’re the biggestland predators on Earth. Sadly, they’re alsoendangered animals.

Seals are polar bears’ main food. Polar bears areendangered because it’s becoming more difficultfor them to catch the seals. The bears wait onthe frozen Arctic Ocean and catch the sealswhen they come up through holes in the ice. They can only reach the seals when the sea isfrozen, but the world’s weather is changing.World temperatures are getting higher, and thesea ice in the Arctic is getting thinner. Insummer, the bears can’t walk over the ice, andso they can’t catch seals. Spring ice is alsogetting thinner, so it’s becoming harder to catchseals in spring, too.

A new report says that the amount of ice in theArctic has become more than 25% smaller inthe past half-century. As a result, the bears arehungry. They have started to come into townsto look for food. Some polar bears have evenentered houses! People in Arctic towns must bevery careful because bears can attack and killhumans. In the small, isolated Canadian town ofChurchill, parents are now taking their childrento school to give them protection from attacksby bears.

Polar bears are very big and very fierce, butthey're also very beautiful creatures. Protectingthe polar bears’ Arctic habitat is important forbears and people.

A £2 million secretWhat would you do if you won the lottery? Would you tell your friends? Some lotterywinners don’t want the newspapers to know their names, but they usually share the newswith their families and friends. But one winner hasn’t told anyone. We interviewed her lastweek. We can’t tell readers the woman’s real name, so we've called her ‘Nicola’.

Nicola has got a fortune in the bank, but no one knows about it. She won £2 million in thelottery three months ago, but she didn’t want the money to change her life, so she didn’ttell anyone: not even her husband! Nicola didn’t want to tell him because she didn’t wanthim to leave his job. Nicola’s husband didn’t use to work. He stayed at home for nearlyfour years and watched TV all day! Eventually he found a job, and now he’s a much nicerand happier person. ‘That’s why I decided not to tell him about the money,’ Nicola said. ‘I

was afraid it would change our lives. He would have used the lottery money as anopportunity to stop work again. I don’t want him to be lazy and unhappy again. I didn’twant to ruin the life that we’ve got now.’

So how does Nicola keep her secret? Nicola still has a job, but now she doesn’t go to workevery day. She tells her husband that she's doing more of her work at home. The family goout together a lot more and they've got new clothes. She pretends that she's managed tosave the money for these things.

‘Are you happy?’ we asked her. ‘Yes,’ Nicola answered. 'I don’t have to worry about moneynow, and that’s nice. But nothing else has changed. Sometimes I buy things secretly, but Idon’t spend a lot of money. We don’t need glamorous clothes and expensive holidays.’

Selling the Mona LisaIn 1911, a con man called Eduardo de Valfiernothought of a plan to steal the world-famouspainting, the Mona Lisa. He also planned to sellsix copies of it to six different people!

In Paris, Valfierno found a very talented forgercalled Yves Chaudron. He asked Chaudron topaint six copies of the Mona Lisa. When he hadfinished, these six copies headed for the USA.

When the forgeries had left France, Valfiernoset out to steal the real painting. He hired aburglar called Vincenzo Perugia. Perugiapretended to be a worker at the LouvreMuseum. He easily took the Mona Lisa off thewall. Nobody asked him any questions.

Valfierno paid Perugia plenty of money, and hetold Perugia he could keep the real painting.Valfierno only wanted the world to know it hadbeen stolen. He wanted to sell the forgeries tosix buyers, who all thought they were gettingthe real painting. It was a brilliant plan! Noneof the six buyers got professional advice abouttheir painting. If they had asked experts to lookat it, they would have known they had boughta forgery.

c trying to protect the environment.

5 Tap water …

a is very expensive to produce.

b is damaging the environment.

c is as healthy as bottled water.

Do you drink bottled water? You may not realize that bottledwater is bad for the environment. This is the message on awebsite from Barham College, a school near Birmingham.

John Knowles, who teaches at the school, explains. ‘Bottledwater has to travel a long way from the factories where it'sproduced to the shops where it's sold. Sometimes it travelsaround the world. This uses a huge amount of petrol, and causesa lot of pollution. Plastic bottles are also thrown away as rubbish.Bottled water is something that we don’t need. We could help toprotect the environment if we stopped buying water in bottles.’

‘We’ve got a conservation group here at the school, and we tryto help the environment through our website,’ says AnnaBenning, a student at Barham College. ‘Lots of students at theschool are going to stop drinking bottled water. Bottled watermay not be healthier than basic tap water, and it’s much moreexpensive.’

However, bottled water is popular and many people won't wantto stop drinking it. In 2004, the average British person drank 33litres of bottled water. In Italy, each person drank 200 litres. Intotal, the world drank 154 billion litres – an increase of 54 percent in just five years.

‘On our website we’re asking people not to buy these bottles ofwater,’ says Anna. ‘If lots of people made this decision, theywould help to protect the Earth from global warming.’
