Introduction
This booklet contains a full set of photocopiable test material for use with Oxford Exchange 2.● ten end-of-unit tests● three end-of-term tests● one end-of-year-test
Higher-level testsThe higher-level tests evaluate your students' command of the language covered in Oxford Exchange through more challenging exercises than those contained in the test booklet. You can use them with a whole class where most students are coping well with the Oxford Exchange coursework, or to cater for more able students in mixed-ability groups.
CD-ROMThe higher-level tests are also available on CD-ROM so that you can copy the files onto your computer and adapt them to suit the needs of your students.
End-of-unit testsThere are ten end-of-unit tests designed to follow the Student’s Book units, and each of them should take 40 minutes to complete. The tests all contain a Vocabulary section (10 marks), and a Grammar section (20 marks), followed by Reading and Writing (5 marks each).
End-of-term and End-of-year testsThe end-of-term and end-of-year tests should take about one hour and should be administered at the end of each term. They are divided into four sections: Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading and Writing and are marked out of a total of 50.End-of-term test 1 is designed to be used after Unit 3, End-of-term test 2 after Unit 7, and End-of-term test 3 after Unit 10.
The end-of-term tests are cumulative – that is, End-of-term test 2 covers language from terms 1 and 2, while End-of-term test 3 covers language from all three terms. You may want to use End-of-term test 3 as a practice test in preparation for the final End-of-year test.
Test summary sheetThere is a test summary sheet on page 5 of this booklet, which can be used to keep a record of students’ test results during the year.
Suggestions for using the tests● Warn students in advance that they will be
having a test and tell them what the test will be covering.
● Students need to develop procedures for revision so encourage them to look back through their notebooks and to use the Grammar and Vocabulary pages at the back of the Student’s Book. You might also want to discuss the amount of time students should spend revising.
● Before students begin a test, spend a few minutes looking through it with the class and make sure that everyone understands how to do each type of activity.
● We do not recommend that you evaluate students’ speaking in the same lesson as the other skills because testing speaking can be time-consuming. Use any speaking activity or the pairwork activities in the Teacher’s Resource Pack (Worksheets booklet) to assess students’ speaking. As students do the activities, move around the class giving students marks for fluency, pronunciation, accuracy and task achievement.

Here are the results of our questionnaire on young people, free time, and jobs at home.
Free timeSport and music are the most popular hobbies. Boys usually play football and basketball, and girls usually play tennis and basketball. More teenagers listen to music than play instruments. Most teenagers watch TV for about two hours a day. They use computers in their free time for games, the Internet, and e-mail. Shopping is also popular, but teenagers don’t usually buy things on the Internet.
Jobs at homeTeenagers spend about an hour a week on jobs at home. Most teenagers don’t like helping at home, but they usually make their beds and tidy their rooms. They don’t usually wash the dishes or take out the rubbish. Boys and girls go shopping with their parents for food, and they often cook meals at weekends.
ConclusionTeenagers like the same things as teenagers in the past, but they use technology more often in their free time. They prefer doing jobs in their own bedrooms.

My name is Rani and I live in Manchester. I’ve got two brothers and a sister. My mother is Indian and my father is English. I speak Hindi – an Indian language – and English. I’m very good at both languages but I use them in different situations.
My mum speaks English very well and so we usually use English at home. My dad can understand quite a lot of Hindi but he can’t speak it very well. Our general conversation is in English, but my mother and I argue in Hindi! I also use Hindi with my Indian grandparents because they don’t speak much English.
I have English and Indian friends so I use both languages at school. I sometimes teach my English friends the Hindi words for food or clothes. We laugh because they can’t pronounce the words very well. I’m also learning French but I don’t use it very often after school. I have a French penfriend and we write letters and e-mails in English and French. I want to learn Spanish, but we don’t have a Spanish teacher at our school.

Olympic factfile
● The first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens, Greece in 1896. Only 13 countries took part in the games with 311 athletes. All of them were men because women couldn’t participate. Women competed for the first time in 1900, but only in golf and tennis. In the 2000 games in Sydney, there were about 15,000 athletes, with both men and women in most sports.
Olympic factfile
● The famous flag of the Olympic Games shows five rings. This shows the union of the athletes who come from all five continents of the world. The colours of the Olympic flag are the same as in the flags of the countries who take part. Part
of the Olympic message says, ‘The most important thing in Olympic Games is not
to win but to take part …’.
Olympic factfile
● A Swedish competitor, Oscar Swahn, won a silver medal at the 1920 games in Belgium. He was 72 years old and he was the oldest medal winner in the history of the games. The youngest athlete who took part was probably Dimitrios
Loundras from Greece. He was tenyears old when he competed in the 1896 games.

I tidied my room last weekend and I found an old diary. I wrote it when I was ten years old and I’m fourteen now. I read about my old hobbies. When I was ten I went to karate classes and I played the piano, but I don’t do these activities now. I prefer to use my computer and go shopping. I also found some old photos. I was short when I was ten. I had long hair and I wore horrible clothes! My mum bought my clothes for me, but now I choose them. I’m quite tall now and my hair is short. I was very interested in music when I was ten and I found some certificates from my piano exams. One year I won a little trophy in a competition. I listen to pop music every day now but I don’t play the piano very often. My mum and I argue about this. She plays the piano very well, but I think it’s boring. I often look at my diary now – I want to remember when I was a child.

A BAD EXPERIENCEMy name’s John. One day last spring my friend, Anne, and I decided to go walking in the mountains. When we left home, the sun was shining and the sky was blue. We walked for about an hour and then we decided to climb one of the mountains.
After half an hour, I stopped and looked up at the sky. There were black clouds and then it started to rain very hard. Then lightning struck and we decided to escape from the storm. We were climbing down the mountain when a rock fell on my head. I fell down and I couldn’t move. Anne couldn’t lift me and so she called the rescue team on her mobile phone.
We waited in the storm and then a helicopter arrived. The rescue team lifted me onto a special bed and then into the helicopter. They flew me to a hospital in the next town. I didn’t feel well and I was frightened, but I survived the accident.
After a week in hospital, I went home. I still go walking now but I always check the weather before I leave.

In my opinion, life in the future will be very different. Everyone will have a computer and they will use it for work and study. People won’t go to offices or shops to work – they will work from home. Students will also stay at home and learn with computers.
Communication will be very fast. People won’t write letters because everyone will use e-mail. When people want to chat, they will use videophones and so they will see as well as hear the other person.
I think houses will be different. They will be more efficient because they will create energy with solar panels. Computers will control everything in the house. If you are out, the computer in your cooker will prepare your dinner for you. Your fridge will tell you when to buy milk, eggs, butter, etc.
I believe people will have more free time because they won’t travel to work or school. Machines will do a lot of the jobs at home, but I don’t think robots will work in people’s houses. I’m not sure if people will travel to other planets because it will be very expensive.

We invited actor JOE EVANS to review his favourite CD of the month.
This week I’m reviewing ‘Good times’ by the American artist Richie Low. Richie started in the music business as a rap artist with the band The New Yorkers. They split up after problems with their manager. This CD is a change in style for Richie. The lyrics in his first CDs were very aggressive but in ‘Good times’ they are more romantic. The music is different, too. The sound is more soul than rap. The band still uses drum and bass rhythms, but there is also a lot of saxophone and guitar. My favourite songs are ‘Go for it’ and ‘Dream time’. They feature the English vocalist Kelly Gray and she creates a fantastic sound. ‘Dream time’ is the first single from the CD and I think it will be a bit hit. Richie Low is preparing to go on tour next spring with Kelly Gray. I’m not sure if the fans of his rap music will enjoy the new style but I hope Richie will make a lot of new fans.

Dear Elena
We’re in our new house in Oxford now and I really like it. Everything is very different from in London. Our house there was bigger but we’ve got a really nice garden now. The old house was more modern but the new house is prettier. I can walk to my new school in ten minutes - it was half an hour on the bus in London.
Living in London was interesting, but travelling was difficult. All the historic buildings in Oxford are in a small area, so you can see a lot in one day. Oxford is cleaner too - the pollution in London was very bad.
There are some things I don’t like about Oxford! The shops are small and there aren’t many department stores. Bands don’t play concerts here very often. I think I’ll go back to London to see my favourite bands.
I think the people in London were friendlier. I’ve got one or two friends at school but people don’t talk to me very much. The classes are smaller at my new school, so it’s easier to learn.
Please visit me here soon.LoveDiane

Hi Sandra
How are you? I hope your exams weren’t very difficult last week.
I had a great time last weekend. I went to a festival in Brighton. There were lots of bands and people danced all night. I was dancing with my sister when I met a boy from Italy. His name’s Paolo and he’s very good-looking! He’s studying English in Brighton at the moment.
On Sunday we walked round Brighton. It’s much smaller than London, but it’s very interesting. There are some historic buildings and also some modern parts too. There’s a great area for shopping called ‘The Lanes’. The shops are small but they’re nicer than in London.
My family and I are going on holiday next week. We’re flying to Paris and we’re staying in a hotel near the centre. My parents have got tickets for a classical concert but my sister and I aren’t going. We prefer pop music. (I bought the new CD by The Nerves last week – I’ll record it for you if you want.)
I’m going to e-mail Paolo now. If I have time, I’ll visit you next week.
LoveNicola

Last winter my parents and I stayed in an old house in a small village. When we arrived, two young children were playing near the house. The girl shouted. ‘Don’t stay here – it’s haunted!’ We all laughed and then the children ran away. In the afternoon, we went for a walk. It was getting dark, when we found an old cemetery. I felt a bit scared, so we went back to the house. My dad cooked dinner and then we played games and read books. We went to bed early and I went to sleep quickly. At midnight, I heard a noise. It was a little girl and she was singing. I was very scared, so I turned on the lamp. There was a young girl next to my bed. I asked her, ‘What are you doing here?’ She said, ‘Don’t you remember me? We met earlier today.’ ‘What do you want?’ I shouted. ‘This is my house,’ the girl said. ‘I died here.’ I closed my eyes and screamed. The girl disappeared. Then my mum came into my bedroom. ‘Don’t worry, Anne. It was only a nightmare,’ she said.

Computer expert has fourteenth
birthdayGary Bradshaw celebrated his birthday last week – at a local paper company. The director organized a party to say thank you for Gary’s help with their new computers. Gary is an expert in computers and he’s only 14.
In an interview with the Bradshaw family, Gary said, ‘I couldn’t use a computer when I was very young. We didn’t have a computer at home, so I didn’t play games or use CD-ROMs for learning.’ Mrs Bradshaw continued, ‘Then my sister bought a computer for her children and Gary loved it. He started to learn all about computers and we bought his first machine when he was nine.’ Gary started to write computer programs and help people with their technical problems. He said, ‘Writing programs isn’t difficult for me. I can write quickly and people say my programs are easy to use. My mum’s friend works at the local paper company. She said they were having problems with their new system and I gave them some advice.’ What about Gary’s future? I want to have a computer company,’ he said, ‘but I must finish school first!’

We interviewed 100 teenagers about sport and health. Here are the results.
SportMost of the teenagers play sport every week and the most popular activities are swimming, basketball and tennis. Girls prefer team sports but boys like individual activities like cycling. Only twenty-five of the group have tried a more dangerous activity like mountain-climbing. Not many of the group participate in sporting competitions. All the teenagers think that drugs in sport are very bad.
HealthMost of the teenagers don’t have health problems. They are ill only about three times a year with simple problems like colds. The more active teenagers sometimes get broken arms or legs. A lot of the teenagers worry about their weight. They said they wanted to lose weight and be like their favourite stars. The teenagers don’t agree on the question of smoking. Some of them said it was very bad and others said it was attractive.
ConclusionSport is popular with most teenagers, but they prefer more traditional activities. Most of the teenagers are healthy but a lot want to be lighter. The teenagers agree about drugs in sport but disagree about smoking.
