The motorcycle presents you a challenge to master the machine, a challenge to adventure. You ride through the wind, linked to the road by a vehicle that responds to your commandsas no other does. Unlike an automobile, there is no metal cage around you. Like an airplane, apre-ride inspection and regular maintenance are essential to your safety. Your reward isfreedom.

To meet the challenges safely, and to enjoy the adventure fully, you should becomethoroughly familiar with this owner’s manual BEFORE YOU RIDE THE MOTORCYCLE.

Pleasant riding, and thank you for choosing a Honda !

When service is required, remember that your Honda dealer knows your motorcycle best. Ifyou have the required mechanical ‘‘know-how’’ and tools, your dealer can supply you with anofficial Honda Shop Manual to help you perform many maintenance and repair tasks.

As you read this manual, you will find information that is preceded by a symbol. Thisinformation is intended to help you avoid damage to your motorcycle, other property, or theenvironment.

There is much that you can do to protectyourself when you ride. You’ll find manyhelpful recommendations throughout thismanual. Following are a few that weconsider to be most important.

Alcohol and riding don’t mix. Even onedrink can reduce your ability to respond tochanging conditions, and your reaction timegets worse with every additional drink. Sodon’t drink and ride, and don’t let yourfriends drink and ride either.

It’s a proven fact: helmets significantlyreduce the number and severity of headinjuries. So always wear an approvedmotorcycle helmet and make sure yourpassenger does the same. We alsorecommend that you wear eye protection, sturdy boots, gloves, and other protectivegear (page ).

Your motorcycle can provide many years ofservice and pleasure if you takeresponsibility for your own safety andunderstand the challenges that you canmeet on and off road.

Some drivers do not see motorcyclesbecause they are not looking for them. Tomake yourself more visible, wear brightreflective clothing, position yourself soother drivers can see you, signal beforeturning or changing lanes, and use yourhorn when it will help others notice you.

The terrain can present a variety ofchallenges when you ride of f -road.Continually ‘‘read’’ the terrain f orunexpected turns, drop-offs, rocks, ruts, andother hazards. Always keep your speed lowenough to allow time to see and react tohazards.

Pushing the limits is another major cause ofmotorcycle accident both on-road and off.Never ride beyond your personal abilities orfaster than conditions warrant. Rememberthat alcohol, drugs, fatigue and inattentioncan significantly reduce your ability to makegood judgements and ride safely.

For safe riding, it’s important to keep yourmotorcycle properly maintained. Having abreakdown can be difficult, especially if youare stranded off-road far from your base. Tohelp avoid problems, inspect yourmotorcycle before every ride and performall recommended maintenance. Neverexceed load limits, and use only accessoriesthat have been approved by Honda for thismotorcycle. See page for more details.5

For your safety, we strongly recommendthat you always wear an approvedmotorcycle helmet, eye protection, boots, gloves, trousers, and a long-sleeved shirt orjacket whenever you ride. Althoughcomplete protection is not possible, wearingproper gear can reduce the chance of injurywhen you ride.Following are suggestions to help youchoose proper gear.

Your helmet is your most important piece ofriding gear because it offers the bestprotection against head injuries. A helmetshould fit your head comfortably andsecurely. A bright-coloured helmet canmake you more noticeable in traffic, as canreflective strips.

An open-face helmet offers some protection, but a full-face helmet offers more. Alwayswear a face shield or goggles to protectyour eyes and help your vision.

PROTECTIVE APPAREL Helmets and Eye Protection

3

Not wearing a helmet increases thechance of serious injury or death in acrash.

Be sure you and your passengeralways wear a helmet, eye protectionand other protective apparel when youride.

10/03/11 17:06:41 32KRHA00_013

Page 14: Owners Manual XR125 UK 32KRHA00 All

In addition to a helmet and eye protection,we also recommend:

Sturdy boots with non-slip soles to helpprotect your feet and ankles.Leather gloves to keep your hands warmand help prevent blisters, cuts, burns andbruises.A motorcycle riding suit or jacket forcomfort as well as protection. Bright-coloured and reflective clothing can helpmake you more noticeable in traffic. Besure to avoid loose clothes that could getcaught on any part of your motorcycle.

On-road apparel may also be suitable forcasual off-road riding. But if you plan on anyserious off-road riding you will need moreserious off-road gear. In addition to yourhelmet and eye protection, we recommendoff-road motorcycle boots and gloves, ridingtrousers with knee and hip pads, a jerseywith elbow pads, and a chest/shoulderprotector.

Brake Fluid Level:

This motorcycle has a hydraulic front discbrake. As the brake pads wear, brake fluid leveldrops. There are no adjustments to perform, butfluid level and pad wear must be inspectedperiodically. The system must be inspectedfrequently to ensure there are no fluid leaks. If the brake lever free travel becomesexcessive and the brake pads are not wornbeyond the recommended limit (page ),there is probably air in the brake systemand it must be bled. See your Honda dealerfor this service.

With the motorcycle in an upright position, check the fluid level. It should be above theLOWER level mark ( ). If the level is at orbelow the LOWER level mark ( ), checkthe brake pads for wear (page ).

Worn pads should be replaced. If the padsare not worn, have your brake systeminspected for leaks.

The recommended brake fluid is HondaDOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealedcontainer, or an equivalent.

Petrol is highly flammable andexplosive. You can be burned orseriously injured when handling fuel.

Stop the engine and keep heat, sparks, and flame away.Refuel only outdoors.Wipe up spills immediately.

10/03/11 17:08:32 32KRHA00_031

Page 32: Owners Manual XR125 UK 32KRHA00 All

If ‘‘spark knock’’ or ‘‘pinking’’ occurs at asteady engine speed under normal load, change brands of petrol. If spark knock orpinking persists, consult your Honda dealer.Failure to do so is considered misuse, anddamage caused by misuse is not covered byHonda’s Limited Warranty.

Occasionally you may experience lightspark knock while operating under heavyloads. This is no cause for concern, it simplymeans your engine is operating efficiently.

Use unleaded petrol with a research octanenumber of 91 or higher.

22

10/03/11 17:08:35 32KRHA00_032

Page 33: Owners Manual XR125 UK 32KRHA00 All

Before buying fuel from an unfamiliarstation, try to find out if the fuel containsalcohol. If it does, confirm the type andpercentage of alcohol used. If you noticeany undesirable operating symptoms whileusing a petrol that contains alcohol, or onethat you think contains alcohol, switch to apetrol that you know does not containalcohol.

The use of petrol containing more than 10 %ethanol (or more than 5 % methanol) may:

Damage the painting of the fuel tank.Damage the rubber tubes of the fuel line.Cause corrosion of the fuel tank.Cause poor drivability.

If you decide to use a petrol containingalcohol (gasohol), be sure it’s octane ratingis at least as high as that recommended byHonda. There are two types of ‘‘gasohol’’:one containing ethanol, and the othercontaining methanol. Do not use petrol thatcontains more than 10 % ethanol. Do not usepetrol containing methanol (methyl or woodalcohol) that does not also containcosolvents and corrosion inhibitors formethanol. Never use petrol containing morethan 5 % methanol, even if it has cosolventsand corrosion inhibitors.

To safely operate your motorcycle, the tyresmust be the proper type (off-road) and size,in good condition with adequate tread, andcorrectly inflated.

Properly inflated tyres provide the bestcombination of handling, tread life, andriding comfort. Generally, underinflatedtyres wear unevenly, adversely affecthandling, and are more likely to fail frombeing overheated. Underinflated tyres canalso cause wheel damage in rocky terrain.Overinflated tyres make your motorcycleride harshly, are more prone to damagefrom surface hazards, and wear unevenly.

Make sure the valve stem caps are secure. If necessary, install new caps.

Air PressureTYRES

25

Using tyres that are excessively wornor improperly inflated can cause acrash in which you can be seriouslyhurt or killed.

Follow all instructions in this owner’smanual regarding tyre inflation andmaintenance.

10/03/11 17:08:52 32KRHA00_035

Page 36: Owners Manual XR125 UK 32KRHA00 All

Whenever you check the tyre pressures, you should also examine the tyre treads andsidewalls for wear, damage, and foreignobjects:

Look for:Bumps or bulges in the side of the tyre orthe tread. Replace the tyre if you find anybumps or bulges.Cuts, splits or cracks in the tyre. Replacethe tyre if you can see fabric or cord.Excessive tread wear.

Also, if you hit a pothole or hard object, pullto the side of the road as soon as you cansafely and carefully inspect the tyres fordamage.

Always check air pressure when your tyresare ‘‘cold.’’ If you check air pressure whenyour tyres are ‘‘warm’’ even if yourmotorcycle has only been ridden for a fewmiles the readings will be higher. If youlet air out of warm tyres to match therecommended cold pressures, the tyres willbe underinflated.

The recommended ‘‘cold’’ tyre pressuresare:

Always follow the proper starting proceduredescribed below.

Your motorcycle’s exhaust containspoisonous carbon monoxide gas. Highlevels of carbon monoxide can collectrapidly in enclosed areas such as a garage.Do not run the engine with the garage doorclosed. Even with the door open, run theengine only long enough to move yourmotorcycle out of the garage.

Do not use the electric starter for more than5 seconds at a time. Release the start buttonfor approximately 10 seconds beforepressing it again.

This motorcycle is equipped with a sidestand ignition cut-off system. The enginecannot be started if the side stand is down, unless the transmission is in neutral. If theside stand is up, the engine can be started inneutral or in gear with the clutch leverpulled in. After starting with the side standdown, the engine will shut off if thetransmission is put in gear before raisingthe side stand.

Do not downshift when traveling at aspeed that would force the engine tooverrev in the next lower gear; the rearwheel may lose traction, resulting in apossible loss of vehicle control.Do not shift gears without disengagingthe clutch and closing the throttle. Theengine and drive train could be damagedby overspeed and shock.Do not tow the motorcycle or coast forlong distances while the engine is off.The transmission will not be properlylubricated and damage may result.Do not run the engine at high rpm withthe transmission in neutral or the clutchlever pulled in. Serious engine damagemay result.

Coordinate the throttle and brakes forsmooth deceleration. Both front and rear brakes should beused at the same time and should not beapplied strongly enough to lock the wheel,or braking effectiveness will be reducedand control of the motorcycle be difficult.

Raise the shift lever to shift to a highergear and depress the shift lever to shift toa lower gear. Each stroke of the shiftlever engages the next gear in sequence. The shift lever automatically returns tothe horizontal position when released.

When riding in wet or rainy conditions, oron loose surfaces, the ability to maneuverand stop will be reduced. All of youractions should be smooth under theseconditions. Rapid acceleration, braking orturning may cause loss of control. Foryour safety, exercise extreme cautionwhen braking, accelerating or turning.

When possible, reduce speed or brakebefore entering a turn; closing thethrottle or braking in mid-turn may causewheel slip. Wheel slip will reduce controlof the motorcycle.

Independent operation of only the brakelever or brake pedal reduces stoppingperformance.Extreme application of the brake controlsmay cause wheel lock, reducing control ofthe motorcycle.

Important Safety Reminders:Your motorcycle is equipped with ahydraulically-activated disc brake in frontand a mechanically-activated drum brake atthe rear. Operating the brake lever appliesthe front disc brake. Depressing the brakepedal applies the rear drum brake.

For normal braking, gradually apply boththe f r ont and r ea r brakes whi ledownshifting to suit your road speed. For maximum deceleration, close thethrottle and apply the front and rear brakesfirmly. Pull in the clutch lever beforecoming to a complete stop to preventstalling the engine.

Engine oil quality is the chief factoraffecting engine service life. Change theengine oil as specified in the maintenanceschedule (page ).When running in very dusty conditions, oilchanges should be performed moref r equent ly t han spec i f i ed in t hemaintenance schedule.

Please dispose of used engine oil in amanner that is compatible with theenvironment. We suggest you take it in asealed container to your local recyclingcenter or service station for reclamation. Donot throw it in the trash or pour it on theground or down a drain.

Used engine oil may cause skin cancer ifrepeatedly left in contact with the skin forprolonged periods. Although this is unlikelyunless you handle used oil on a daily basis,it is still advisable to thoroughly wash yourhands with soap and water as soon as possi-ble after handling used oil.

Change the engine oil with the engine atnormal operating temperature and themotorcycle on its side stand to assurecomplete and rapid draining.

If a torque wrench is not used for thisinstallation, see your Honda dealer as soonas possible to verify proper assembly.

Changing the oil requires a torque wrench. If you do not have it and the necessary skill,we recommend that you have your Hondadealer perform this service.

The service life of the drive chain isdependent upon proper lubrication andadjustment. Poor maintenance can causepremature wear or damage to the drivechain and sprockets. The drive chain should be checked andlubricated as part of the Pre-ride Inspection(page ). Under severe usage, or whenthe motorcycle is ridden in unusually dustyo r m u d d y a r e a s , m o r e f r e q u e n tmaintenance will be necessary.

Check slack in the lower drive chain runmidway between the sprockets.Drive chain slack should be adjusted toallow the following vertical movement byhand:

Inspection:Turn the engine off, raise the rear wheeloff the ground by placing a support underthe engine, and shift the transmissioninto neutral.

Rotate the rear wheel. Stop. Check thedrive chain slack. Repeat this procedureseveral times. Drive chain slack shouldremain constant. If the chain is slack onlyin certain sections, some links are kinkedand binding. Binding and kinking canfrequently be eliminated by lubrication.

Excessive chain slack may allow the drivechain to damage the engine cases.

Avoid cleaning products that are notspecifically designed for motorcycle orautomobile surfaces. They may contain harsh detergents orchemical solvents that could damage themetal, paint, and plastic on your motorcycle.

If your motorcycle is still warm from recentoperation, give the engine and exhaustsystem time to cool off.

We recommend avoiding the use of highpressure water spray (typical in coin-operated car washes).

High pressure water (or air) can damagecertain parts of the motorcycle.

Clean your motorcycle regularly to protectthe surface finishes and inspect for damage, wear, and oil or brake fluid leakage.
