If this Craftsman Lawn Mower fails due to manufacturer defects in material orworkmanship within two years from the date of purchase, return it to any Sears store,Parts & Repair Center or other Craftsman outlet for free repair (or replacement if repairproves impossible).

This warranty applies for only 90 days from the date of purchase if this Lawn Mower isever used for commercial or rental purposes.

This warranty does not cover:

• Expendable items that become worn during normal use, such as rotary mowerblades, blade adapters, belts, air cleaners and spark plug.

. Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bentcrackshafts and the failure to assemble, operate or maintain this Lawn Moweraccording to all supplied product instructions.

This warranty applies only while this product is used in the United States.

I. GENERAL OPERATION• Read, understand, and follow all

instructions on the machine and in themanual(s) before starting. Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and the properuse of the machine before starting.

• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts. Keep clear of the dis-charge opening at all times.

• Only allow responsible individuals, whoare familiar with the instructions, to oper-ate the machine.

• Clear the area of objects such as rocks,toys, wire, bones, sticks, etc., whichcould be picked up and thrown by blade.

• Be sure the area is clear of other peoplebefore mowing. Stop machine if anyoneenters the area.

• Do not operate the mower when bare-foot or wearing open sandals. Alwayswear substantial foot wear.

• Do not pull mower backwards unlessabsolutely necessary. Always look downand behind before and while movingbackwards.

• Never direct discharged material towardanyone. Avoid discharging materialagainst a wall or obstruction. Materialmay richochet back toward the opera-tor. Stop the blade when crossing gravelsurfaces.

• Do not operate the mower withoutproper guards, plates, grass catcher orother safety protective devices in place.

• See manufacturer's instructions for

proper operation and installation ofaccessories. Only use accessories ap-proved by the manufacturer.

• Stop the blade(s) when crossing graveldrives, walks, or roads.

• Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the equipment, before cleaning themower or unclogging the chute.

• Shut the engine (motor) off and wait untilthe blade comes to complete stop beforeremoving grass catcher.

• Mow only in daylight or good artificiallight.

• Do not operate the machine while underthe influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Never operate machine in wet grass.Always be sure of your footing: keep afirm hold on the handle; walk, never run.

• Disengage the self-propelled mech-anism or drive clutch on mowers soequipped before starting the engine.

• If the equipment should start to vibrateabnormally, stop the engine (motor) andcheck immediately for the cause. Vibra-tion is generally a warning of trouble.

. Always wear safety goggles or safetyglasses with side shields when operatingmower.

Ii. SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to slip &fa!l accidents which can result in severe in-jury. All slopes require extra caution. If youfeel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it.DO:

• Mow across the face of slopes: neverup and down. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.

• Remove obstacles such as rocks, treelimbs, etc.

• Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tallgrass can hide obstacles.

DO NOT:

• Do not trim near drop-offs, ditches orembankments. The operator could losefooting or balance.

• Do not trim excessively steep slopes.• Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced foot-

ing could cause slipping.

Iii. CHILDREN

Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children.Children are often attracted to the machineand the mowing activity. Never assumethat children will remain where you lastsaw them.• Keep children out of the trimming area

and under the watchful care of anotherresponsible adult.

• Be alert and turn machine off if childrenenter the area.

• Before and while walking backwards,look behind and down for small children.

• Never allow children to operate the ma-chine.

• Use extra care when approaching blindcorners, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may obscure vision.

IV. SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE

Use extreme care in handling gasoline.Gasoline is extremely flammable and thevapors are explosive.• Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes

and other sources of ignition.• Use only an approved container.• Never remove gas cap or add fuel with

the engine running. Allow engine to coolbefore refueling.

• Never refuel the machine indoors.• Never store the machine or fue! contain-

er where there is an open flame, sparkor pilot light such as a water heater or onother appliances.

• Never fill containers inside a vehicle, ona truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner.Always place containers on the groundaway from your vehicle before filling.

• Remove gas-powered equipment fromthe truck or trailer and refuel it on theground. If this is not possible, thenrefuel such equipment with a portablecontainer, rather than from a gasolinedispenser nozzle.

• Keep the nozzle in contact with the rimof the fuel tank or container opening atall times until fueling is complete. Donot use a nozzle lock-open device.

• If fuel is spilled on clothing, changeclothing immediately.

• Never overfill fuel tank. Replace gascap and tighten securely.

V. GENERAL SERVICE• Never run a machine inside a closed

area.Never make adjustments or repairs withthe engine (motor) running. Disconnectthe spark plug wire, and keep the wireaway from the plug to prevent accidentalstarting.

• Keep nuts and bolts, especially bladeattachment bolts, tight and keep equip-ment in good condition.

• Never tamper with safety devices. Checktheir proper operation regularly.

• Keep machine free of grass, leaves, orother debris build-up. Clean oil or fuelspillage. Allow machine to cool beforestoring.

• Stop and inspect the equipment if youstrike an object. Repair, if necessary,before restarting.

• Never attempt to make wheel heightadjustments while the engine is running.

• Grass catcher components are subjectto wear, damage, and deterioration,which could expose moving parts orallow objects to be thrown. Frequentlycheck components and replace withmanufacturer's recommended parts,when necessary.

• Mower blades are sharp and can cut.Wrap the blade(s) or wear gloves, anduse extra caution when servicing them.

• Do not change the engine governor set-ting or overspeed the engine.

• Maintain or replace safety and instruc-tion labels, as necessary.

&WARNING: This lawn mower is equipped with an internal combustion engine andshould not be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered orgrass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a sparkarrester meeting applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, itshould be maintained in effective working order by the operator.In the state of California the above is required by law (Section 4442 of the CaliforniaPublic Resources Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply onfederal lands. A spark arrester for the muffler is available through your nearest SearsParts & Repair Center (See the REPAIR PARTS section of this manual).

Read these instructions and this manual inits entirety before you attempt to assembleor operate your new lawn mower.IMPORTANT: This lawn mower is shippedWITHOUT OIL OR GASOLINE in the engine.Your new lawn mower has been assem-bled at the factory with the exception ofthose parts left unassembled for shippingpurposes. To ensure safe and properoperation of your lawn mower, all partsand hardware you assemble must be tight-ened securely. Use the correct tools asnecessary to ensure proper tightness. Allparts such as nuts, washers, bolts, etc.,necessary to complete the assembly havebeen placed in the parts bag.

TO REMOVE MOWER FROM CARTON

1. Remove loose parts included withmower.

2. Cut down two end corners of cartonand lay end panel down flat.

3. Remove al! packing materials exceptpadding between upper and lowerhandle and padding holding operatorpresence control bar to upper handle.

4. Roll lawn mower out of carton andcheck carton thoroughly for additionalloose parts.

1. Put grass catcher frame into grass bagwith rigid part of bag on the bottom.Make sure the frame handle is outsideof the bag top.

2. Slip vinyl bindings over frame.NOTE: If vinyl bindings are too stiff, holdthem in warm water for a few minutes. Ifbag gets wet, let it dry before using.

HOW TO USE YOUR LAWN MOWERENGINE SPEED

Engine speed was set at the factory foroptimum performance. It is not adjustable.ENGINE ZONE CONTROL

,_CAUTION" Federal regulations requirean engine control to be installed on thislawn mower in order to minimize therisk of blade contact injury. Do not underany circumstances attempt to defeat thefunction of the operator control. The bladeturns when the engine is running.• Your lawn mower is equipped with an

operator presence control bar whichrequires the operator to be positionedbehind the lawn mower handle to startand operate the lawn mower.

TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHTRaise wheels for low cut and lower wheelsfor high cut, adjust cutting height to suityour requirements. Medium position isbest for most lawns.• To change cutting height, squeeze ad-

juster lever toward wheel. Move wheelup or down to suit your requirements. Besure all wheels are in the same setting.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINEADD OIL

Your lawnmower is shipped without oil inthe engine. For type and grade of oil touse, see "ENGINE" in the Maintenancesection of this manual.,A CAUTION: DO NOT overfill engine withoil, or it will smoke heavily from the muffleron startup.1. Be sure lawnmower is level.2. Remove oil dipstick from oil fill spout.3. You receive a container of oil with the

unit. Slowly pour the entire containerdown the oi! fill spout into the engine.

NOTE: Initial oil fil! requires only 18 oz.due to residual oil in engine from themanufacturers 100% quality testing.When changing oil you may need 20 oz.4. Insert and tighten dipstick.

IMPORTANT:• Check oil level before each use. Add oil

if needed. Fill to full line on dipstick.• Change the oil after every 25 hours of

operation or each season. You mayneed to change the oil more oftenunder dusty, dirty conditions. See "TOCHANGE ENGINE OIL" in the Mainte-nance section of this manual.

ADD GASOLINE• Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck.

Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline with a minimum of87 octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline.Purchase fuel in quantities that can beused within 30 days to assure fuel fresh-ness.

A CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil orfuel. Do not store, spill or use gasolinenear an open flame.Al_ CAUTION: Alcohol blended fuels(called gasoho! or using ethanol or metha-nol) can attract moisture which leads toseparation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. Toavoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage of 30days or longer. Empty the gas tank, startthe engine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season. See Storage Instructions foradditional information. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

TO STOP ENGINE

• To stop engine, release operator pres-ence control bar.

TO START ENGINE

NOTE: Due to protective coatings on theengine, a small amount of smoke may bepresent during the initial use of the productand should be considered normal.1. To start a cold engine, push primer

three (3) times before trying to start.Use a firm push. This step is notusually necessary when starting anengine which has already run for a fewminutes.

2. Hold operator presence control bardown to the handle and pull starterhandle quickly. Do not allow starterrope to snap back.

NOTE: In cooler weather it may benecessary to repeat priming steps. Inwarmer weather over priming may causeflooding and engine will not start. If you doflood engine, wait a few minutes beforeattempting to start and do not repeatpriming steps.

MOWING TIPS,A CAUTION: Do not use de-thatcher

blade attachments on your mower. Suchattachments are hazardous, wil! damageyour mower and could void your warranty.• Under certain conditions, such as very

tall grass, it may be necessary to raisethe height of cut to reduce pushing effortand to keep from overloading the engineand leaving clumps of grass clippings.It may also be necessary to reduceground speed and/or run the lawnmower over the area a second time.

• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut by overlapping previouslycut path and mow slowly.

• For better grass bagging and most cut-ting conditions, the engine speed shouldbe set in the FAST position.

• Pores in cloth grass catchers canbecome filled with dirt and dust with useand catchers wil! collect less grass. Toprevent this, regularly hose catcher offwith water and let dry before using.

• Keep top of engine around starter clearand clean of grass clippings and chaff.This will help engine air flow and extendengine life.

MULCHING MOWING TIPSIMPORTANT: For best performance,keep mower housing free of built-upgrass and trash. See "CLEANING" in theMaintenance section of this manual.

• The special mulching blade will recutthe grass clippings many times andreduce them in size so that as they fallonto the lawn they will disperse intothe grass and not be noticed. Also, themulched grass will biodegrade quickly toprovide nutrients for the lawn. Alwaysmulch with your highest engine (blade)speed as this will provide the best recut-ting action of the blades.

• Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet.Wet grass tends to form clumps andinterferes with the mulching action. Thebest time to mow your lawn is the earlyafternoon. At this time the grass hasdried, yet the newly cut area will not beexposed to direct sunlight.

• For best results, adjust the lawn mowercutting height so that the lawn mowercuts off only the top one-third of thegrass blades. If the lawn is overgrownit will be necessary to raise the height ofcut to reduce pushing effort and to keepfrom overloading the engine and leavingclumps of mulched grass. For extremelyheavy grass, reduce your width of cutby overlapping previously cut path andmow slowly.

• Certain types of grass and grassconditions may require that an area bemulched a second time to completelyhide the clippings. When doing a sec-ond cut, mow across (perpendicular) tothe first cut path.

• Change your cutting pattern from weekto week. Mow north to south one weekthen change to east to west the nextweek. This will help prevent mattingand graining of the lawn.

BLADE CARE

For best results, mower blade must be keptsharp. Replace bent or damaged blades.A CAUTION: Use only a replacementblade approved by the manufacturer ofyour mower. Using a blade not approvedby the manufacturer of your mower ishazardous, could damage your mower andvoid your warranty.

TO REMOVE BLADE

1. Disconnect spark plug wire from sparkplug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with plug.

2. Turn lawn mower on its side. Makesure air filter and carburetor are up.

3. Use a wood block between blade andmower housing to prevent blade fromturning when removing blade bolt.

NOTE: Protect your hands with glovesand/or wrap blade with heavy cloth.4. Remove blade bolt by turning counter-

clockwise.5. Remove blade and attaching hardware

(bolt, Iockwasher and hardened washer).

TO REPLACE BLADE

1. Position blade on the blade adapteraligning the two (2) holes in the bladewith the raised lugs on the adapter.

2. Be sure the trailing edge of blade (oppo-site sharp edge) is up toward the engine.

3. Install the blade bolt with the lockwasher and hardened washer intoblade adapter and crankshaft.

4. Use block of wood between blade andlawn mower housing and tighten theblade bolt, turning clockwise.

• The recommended tightening torque is35-40 ft. Ibs.

If either end of theblade moves downward, sharpen theheavy end until the blade is balanced.

GRASS CATCHER

The grass catcher may be hosed withwater, but must be dry when used.Check your grass catcher often for dam-age or deterioration. Through normaluse it will wear. If catcher needs replac-ing, replace only with approved replace-ment catcher shown in the Repair Partssection of this manual. Give the lawnmower model number when ordering.

TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL

1. Disconnect spark plug wire from sparkplug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with plug.

2. Be sure lawn mower is on level sur-face.

NOTE: Oil will drain more freely whenwarm. Catch oil in a suitable container.3. Remove bottom oil drain plug.4. After oil has drained completely,

replace oil drain plug and tighten se-curely.

5. Fil! engine with oil. (See "ADD OIL" inthe Operation section of this manual).

6. Reconnect spark plug wire to sparkplug.

AIR FILTER

Your engine will not run properly and maybe damaged by using a dirty air filter.Clean the element after every 25 hoursof operation or every season. Replacethe air filter every 100 hours of operationor every season, whichever occurs first.Service air cleaner more often under dustyconditions.

TO CLEAN AIR FILTER ELEMENT1. Remove screw.2. Remove air cleaner carefully to prevent

dirt from entering carburetor.3. Take air cleaner apart and clean air

filter element.4. Wash filter element in liquid detergent

and water.5. Wrap filter element in cloth and

squeeze dry.6. Lightly coat filter element with clean

engine oil. Squeeze in towel to removeexcess oil. Do not saturate.

7. Reassemble parts and put back oncarburetor.

REAR DEFLECTOR

The rear deflector, attached between therear wheels of your mower, is provided tominimize the possibility that objects willbe thrown out of the rear of the mowerinto the operator mowing position. If thedeflector becomes damaged, it should bereplaced.

TO ADJUST HANDLE

The handle can be mounted in a high orlow position. The mounting holes in thebottom of lower handle are off center forraising or lowering the handle.1. Remove upper handle and all wire

tie(s) securing cable(s) to lower handle.2. Remove hairpin cotters from lower

Your engine speed has been factory set.Do not attempt to increase engine speedor it may result in personal injury. If youbelieve that engine is running too fast ortoo slow, take your mower to a Sears orother qualified service center for repairand adjustment.CARBURETOR

Your carburetor is not adjustable. If yourengine does not operate properly due to sus-pected carburetor problems, take your lawnmower to a Sears or other qualified servicecenter for repair and/or adjustment.IMPORTANT: Never tamper with theengine governor, which is factory setfor proper engine speed. Overspeedingthe engine above the factory high speedsetting can be dangerous. 3. Be sure that all nuts, bolts, screws, andpins are securely fastened. Inspectmoving parts for damage, breakageand wear. Replace if necessary.

4. Touch up all rusted or chipped paintsurfaces; sand lightly before painting.

You can fold your lawn mower handle forstorage.1. Squeeze the bottom ends of the lower

handle toward each other until thelower handle clears the handle bracket,then move handle forward.

2. Loosen upper handle mounting boltsenough to allow upper handle to befolded back.

IMPORTANT: When folding the handle forstorage or transportation, be sure to foldthe handle as shown or you may damagethe control cables.. When setting up your handle from the

storage position, the lower handle will au-tomatically lock into the mowing position.

IMPORTANT: It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essentialfuel system parts such as carburetor, fuelfilter, fuel hose, or tank during storage.Alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol orusing ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage.. Empty the fuel tank by starting the en-

gine and letting it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty.

. Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fue! tank or permanentdamage may occur.

. Use fresh fuel next season.NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptablealternative in minimizing the formation offuel gum deposits during storage. Addstabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or stor-age container. Always follow the mix ratiofound on stabilizer container. Run engineat least 10 minutes after adding stabilizerto allow the stabilizer to reach the car-buretor. Do not empty the gas tank andcarburetor if using fuel stabilizer.

ENGINE OIL

Drain oil (with engine warm) and replacewith clean engine oil. (See "ENGINE" inthe Maintenance section of this manual).

CYLINDER

1. Remove spark plug.2. Pour one ounce (29 ml) of oil through

spark plug hole into cylinder.3. Pull starter handle slowly a few times to

distribute oi!.4. Replace with new spark plug.

OTHER

• Do not store gasoline from one seasonto another.

• Replace your gasoline can if your canstarts to rust. Rust and/or dirt in yourgasoline will cause problems.

• If possible, store your unit indoors andcover it to protect it from dust and dirt.

• Cover your unit with a suitable protec-tive cover that does not retain moisture.Do not use plastic. Plastic cannotbreathe, which allows condensation toform and will cause your unit to rust.

IMPORTANT: Never cover mower while

engine and exhaust areas are still warm.• I,CAUTION: Never store the lawn mower

with gasoline in the tank inside a buildingwhere fumes may reach an open flameor spark. Allow the engine to cool beforestoring in any enclosure.

I. OPERACION• Antes de empezar, debe familiarizarse

Su segadora nueva ha sido montada en lafabrica con la excepci6n de aquellas partes quese dejaron sin montar pot razones de envio.Todas las partes como las tuercas, las arande-las, los pernos, etc., que son necesarias paracompletar el montaje han sido colocadas en labolsa de partes. Para asegurarse que su sega-dora funcione en forma segura y adecuada,todas las partes y los articulos de ferreteria quese monten tienen que set apretados segura-mente. PARA REMOVER LA SEGADORA DELA CAJA DE CARTON1. Remueva las pares sueltas que se incluyen

con la segadora.2. Corte las dos esquinas de los extremos

de la caja de cart6n y tienda el panel delextremo piano.

3. Remueva todo el material de empaque, ex-cepto la curia entre el mango superior y 61inferior, y la curia que sujeta la barra de loscontrol que exige la presencia del operadorjunto con el mango superior.

4. Haga rodar la segadora hacia afuera de lacaja de cart6n y revisela cuidadosamentepara verificar si todavia quedan paressueltas adicionales.

COMO PREPARAR SU SEGADORAPARA DESDOBLAR EL MANGOIMPORTANTE: Despliegue el mango conmucho cuidado para no pellizcar o dafiar loscables de control.1. Levante los mangos hasta que la secci6n

del mango inferior se asegure en su lugar,en la posicidn para segar.

2. Remueva la curia protectora, levante la sec-ci6n del mango superior hasta su lugar enel mango inferior, y apriete ambas manillasdel mango.

3. Remueva la curia del mango que sujeta labarra de los control que exige la presenciadel operador junto con el mango superior.

El mango de la segadora puede ajustarseseg0n le acomode para segar. Refierase a"AJUSTE DEL MANGO" en la secci6n deServicio y Ajustes de este manual.

PARA MONTAR EL RECOGEDOR DE CO:SPED1. Ponga el bastidor del recogedor de cesped

en la bolsa del cesped con la parte dgidade la bolsa en la parte inferior. Aseg0reseque el mango del bastidor este en el exte-rior de la parte superior de la bolsa.

2. Deslice los sujetadores de vinilo sobre elbastidor.

AVISO: Si los sujetadores de vinilo estan muyduros, metalos en agua caliente pot algunosminutos. Si se moja la bolsa, dejela que seseque antes de usarla.

VELOCIDAD DEL MOTORLa velocidad del motor se estableci6 en la fa=brica para un rendimiento 6ptimo. La velocidadno se puede ajustar.

NTROL DE ZONA DEL MOTORPRECAUClON: Las regulaciones federales

exigen que se instale un control para el motoren esta segadora para reducir a un minimo elriesgo de lesionarse debido al contacto con lacuchilla. Por ningOn motivo trate de eliminarla funcidn del control del operador. La cuchillagira cuando el motor esta funcionando.• Su segadora viene equipada con una barra

de controles que exigen la presencia deloperador, Io que requiere que el operadoreste detras del mango de la segadora parahacerla arrancar y operarla.

PARA AJUSTAR LA ALTURA DE CORTELevante las ruedas para el corte bajo y baje lasruedas para el corte alto., ajuste la altura decorte para que se acomode a sus requisitos. LaposicJdn del medio es la mejor para la mayodade los cespedes.• Para cambiar la altura de core, empuje la

palanca del ajustador hacia la rueda. Muevala rueda hacia arriba o hacia abajo de modoque se acomode a sus requisitos. AsegOreseque todas las ruedas queden igualmenteajustadas.

AVlSO: El ajustador esta correctamentecolocado cuando las orejas de la placa estaninsertadas en el agujero del mango. Tambien,los ajustes de 9 posiciones (si equipado) per-miten que el mango pueda ser movido entre lasorejas de la placa.

1. AsegOrese que la segadora este nivelada.2. Remueva la varila medidora de aceite del

tubo de desarga de aceite.3. Usted recibe un envase de aceite con la

unidad. Vierta lentamente el envase enterode aceite en el tubo de relleno del motor.

AVISO: El terraplen inicial del aceite requieresolamente 18 onzas debido al aceite residualen el motor de la prueba de calidad de 100%del fabricante. AI cambiar el aceite puedenecesitar 20 onzas.4. Inserte y apriete la varilla medidora de

aceite.

Agregue aceite si es necesario. Llene hastala linea de Ileno en la varilla medidora denivel.

• Cambie el aceite despues de 25 horas deoperaci6n o una vez por temporada. Puedenecesitar cambiar el aceite mas a menudocuando las condiciones son polvorosas o su-cias. Vea "PARA CAMBIAR EL ACEITE DELMOTOR" en la seccion de Mantenimiento deeste manual.

AGREGUE GASOLINA

• Llene el estanque de combustible hasta laparte inferior del cuello de relleno del es-tanque de gasolina. No Io Ilene demasiado.Use gasolina regular, sin plomo, nueva y lim-pia con el minimo de 87 octanos. No mezcleel aceite con la gasolina. Para asegurarque la gasolina utilizada sea fresca compreestanques los cuales puedan ser utilizadosdurante los primeros 30 dias.

,_PRECAUCION: Limpie el aceite o elcombustible derramado. No almacene, derrameo use gasolina cerca de una llama expuesta.,APRECAUCI6N: Los combustibles

mezclados con alcohol (conocidos comogasohol, o el uso de etanol o metanol) puedenatraer la humedad, la que conduce a laseparaci6n y formaci6n de acidos durante elalmacenamiento. La gasolina acidica puededafiar el sistema del combustible de un motordurante el almacenamiento. Para evitar losproblemas con el motor, se debe vaciar elsistema del combustible antes de guardarlopor un periodo de 30 dias o mas. Vacie elestanque del combustible, haga arrancar elmotor y hagalo funcionar hasta que las lineasdel combustible y el carburador queden vacios.La pr6xima temporada use combustible nuevo.Vea las Instrucciones Para El Almacenamientopara mas informaci6n. Nunca use productos delimpieza para el motor o para el carburador enel estanque del combustible pues se puedenproducir dafios permanentes.

PARA PARAR EL MOTOR• Para parar el motor, suelte la barra de con-

troles que exigen la presencia del operador.

PARA HACER ARRANCAR EL MOTORAVISO: Debido a las capas protectoras del mo-tor, una cantidad pequefia de humo puede es-tar presente durante el uso inicial del productoy se debe considerar normal.1. Para hacer arrancar un motor fr{o, empuje

el cebador tres (3) veces antes de tratarlo.Empuje firmemente. Este paso normal-mente no es necesario cuando se hacearrancar un motor que ya ha estado funcio-nando pot unos cuantos minutos.

2. Sujete la barra de controles que exigen lapresencia del operador abajo en el mangoy tire el mango del arrancador rapidamente.No permita que el cord6n arrancador sedevuelva abruptamente.

AVlSO: En climas mas frfos puede que seanecesafio repetir los pasos del cebado. En cli-mas mas calurosos el cebar demasiado puedeproducir el ahogo y el motor no va a arrancar.Si se ahoga el motor espere unos cuantosminutos antes de tratar de hacerlo arrancar yno repita los pasos del cebado.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR,_PRECAUCI6N: No utilizar dispositivos anti-paja de la hoja en la segadora ya que estosaccesorios son peligrosos, pueden dafiar susegadora y anular su garantia.• Bajo ciertas condiciones, tal como cesped

muy alto, puede ser necesario el elevarla altura del corte para reducir el esfuerzonecesario para empujar la segadora y paraevitar sobrecargar el motor, dejando mon-tones de recortes de cesped. Puede que seanecesario reducir la velocidad del recorridoy/o haga funcionar la segadora sobre el areapor segunda vez.

• Para un corte muy pesado, reduzca el anchodel corte pasando parcialmente por encimadel lugar anteriormente cortado y sieguelentamente.

• Para un mejor ensacado del cesped y para lamayoda de las condiciones de corte, la velo-cidad del motor debe ajustarse a la posici6nde R,APIDO.

• Los poros en los recogedores de cesped detela pueden Ilenarse con mugre y polvo conel uso y los recogedores recaudaran menoscesped. Para evitar este, rode el recogedorcon la manguera de agua regularmente ydejelo secarse antes de usarlo.

• Mantenga la parte superior del motor, alred-edor del arrancador, despejada y sin recortesde cesped y paja. Esto ayudara el flujo delaire del motor y extendera su duraci6n.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR Y ACOL-CHARIMPORTANTE: Para obtener el mejorrendimiento mantenga la caja de la segadorasin acumulacion de cesped y basura. Vea"LIMPIEZA" en la seccion de Mantenimento deeste manual.

• La cuchilla acolchadora especial va a volvera cortar los recortes de cesped muchasveces, y los reduce en tamafio, de modo quesi se caen en el cesped se van a dispesarentre este y no se van a notar. Tambien, elcesped acolchado se va a deshacer rapi-damente entregando substancias nutritivaspara el cesped. Siempre acolche con lavelocidad del motor (cuchilla) mas alta, puesasi se obtendra la mejor acci6n de recorte delas cuchillas.

• Evite cortar el cesped cuando este mojado.El cesped mojado tiende a format montonese interfiere con la acci6n de acolchado.La mejor hora para segar el cesped estemprano en la tarde. A esa hora este se hasecado y el area recien cortada no quedaraexpuesta al sol directo.

• Para obtener los mejores resultados, ajustela altura del corte de la segadora de modoque esta corte solamente el tercio superiorde las hojas de cesped. En el caso de que elcesped haya crecido demasiado, puede setnecesario el elevar la altura del corte parareducir el esfuerzo necesario para empujar lasegadora y para evitar sobrecargar el motor,dejando montones de recortes de cesped.Para un cesped muy pesado, reduzca el an-cho del corte pasando pot encima del lugaranteriormente cortado y siegue lentamente.

• Ciertos tipos de cesped y sus condicionespueden exigir que un area tenga que seracolchada pot segunda vez para escondercompletamente los recortes. Cuando sehaga el segundo corte, siegue atravesado(en forma perpendicular) a la pasada delprimer corte.

• Cambie su patr6n de corte de semana asemana. Siegue de norte a sur una semanay luego cambie de este a oeste la pr6ximasemana. Esto evitara que el cesped seenrede y cambie de direcci6n.

Hay algunos ajustes que se tienen que haceren forma peri6dica para poder mantener suunidad adecuadamente.

AI menos una vez cada estaci6n comprobarsi es necesario efectuar los ajustes descritosen las secciones de Servicio y Ajustes de estemanual.

• Una vez al aSo, cambie la bujia, limpie ocambie el elemento del filtro de aire y revisesi la cuchilla esta desgastada. Una bujianueva y un elemento del filtro de aire limpio/nuevo aseguran la mezcla de aire=com-bustible adecuada y ayudan a que su motorfuncione mejor y que dure mas.

AVlSO: Proteja sus manos con guantes y/oenvuelva la cuchilla con una tela gruesa.4. Remueva el perno de la cuchilla girandolo

en el sentido contrario en que giran lasmanillas del reloj.

5. Remueva la cuchilla y los articulos de fer-reteria adjuntadores (el perno, la arandelade seguridad y la arandela endurecida).

PARA CAMBIAR LA CUCHILLA1. Ponga la cuchilla en el adaptador de esta

alineando los dos (2) agujeros en la cuchillacon las salientes elevadas en el adaptador.

2. AsegOrese de que el borde de salida dela cuchilla (opuesto al borde afilado) estehacia arriba hacia el motor.

3. Instale el perno de la cuchilla con la aran-dela de seguridad y la arandela endurecidaen el adaptador de la cuchilla y el ciguefial.

4. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caja de la segadora y apriete el pernode la cuchilla girandolo en el sentido en quegiran las manillas del reloj.

• La torsi6n para apretar recomendada es de35 -40 pies libras.

IMPORTANTE: El perno de la cuchilla estratado a calo. Si es necesario sustituir lospernos, sustituirlos s61o con pernos aprobadosmostrados en la secci6n Partes de Reparaci6nde este manual.PARA AFILAR LA CUCHILLA

AVlSO: No recomendamos el afilar la cuchilla- pero si Io hace, asegOrese de que quedebalanceada.

Se tiene que tener cuidado de mantenerlabalanceada. Una cuchilla que no esta bal-anceada va a producir eventualmente dafio enla segadora o en el motor.• La cuchilla puede afilarse con una lima o en

una rueda rectificadora. No trate de afilarlamientras se encuentra en la segadora.

• Para revisar el balance de la cuchilla, claveun clavo en una viga o en la pared. Dejealrededor de una pulgada de un clavo rectoexpuesto. Ponga el agujero central de lacuchilla sobre la cabeza del clavo. Si lacuchilla esta balanceada debe permaneceren la posici6n horizontal. Si cualquiera delos extremos de la cuchilla se mueve haciaabajo, afile el extremo pesado hasta queesta quede balanceada.

RECOGEDOR DE CO:SPED• El recogedor de cesped puede ser rociado

con el agua de la manguera pero tiene queestar seco cuando se vaya a usar.

• Revise su recogedor de cesped a menudopara verificar si esta dafiado o deteriorado.Se va a desgastar con el uso normal. Si senecesita cambiar el recogedor, cambielosolamente por uno que sea aprobado por elfabricante. De el nQmero del modelo de lasegadora cuando Io ordene.

MOTORLUBRICACI6NUse solamente aceite de detergente de altacalidad clasificado con la clasificaci6n SG-SLde servicio API. Seleccione la calidad de visco-sidad SAE segQn su temperatura de operaci6nesperada.

AVlSO: A pesar de que los aceites de multi-viscosidad (5W30, 10W30, etc.) mejoran elarranque en clima frio, estos aceites de mul-tiviscosidad van ha aumentar el consumo deaceite cuando se usan en temperaturas sobre32 ° F. FILTRO DE AIRESu motor puede sufrir avedas y funcionar demanera incorrecta con un filtro del aire sucio.Limpie el elemento cada 25 horas de oper-aci6n. Sustituir el papel del cartucho una vezal afio o tras 100 horas de funcionamiento,mas a menudo si se utiliza en condiciones desuciedad y polvo particulates.PARA LIMPIAR EL FILTRO DE AIRE1. Remueva eltornillo.2. Remueva el filtro de aire, cuidadosamente,

3. Desarme el filtro de aire y limpie el el-emento del filtro de aire.

4. Lave el elemento del filtro en detergenteliquido y agua.

5. Envuelva el elemento del filtro en una tela ysequelo apretandolo.

6. Cubra el elemento del filtro con una capadelgada de aceite de motor limpio. Aprieteloen una toalla para remover el aceite enexceso. No Io sature.

7. Vuelva a montar las partes y p6ngalas devuelta en el carburador.

LIMPIEZA

• Mantenga las superficies pulidas y las rue-das sin gasolina, aceite, etc.

• No recomendamos el uso de una manguerade jardin para limpiar la segadora a menosque el sistema electrico, el silenciador, elfiltro de aire y el carburador esten tapadospara evitar que les entre el agua. El agua enel motor puede acortar la duraci6n de este.

2. Remueva las clavijas de horquilla de laclavija de montaje del puntal del mango.

3. Apreite el mango inferior hacia dentro pararemoverlo de las clavijas de montaje.

5. Vuelva a montar las clavijas de horquilla potencima de las clavijas de montaje.

MOTORVELOCIDAD DEL MOTORLa velocidad del motor ha sido ajustada en la fa-brica. No trate de aumentar la velocidad del motorpues se pueden producir lesiones personales. Sicree que el motor esta funcionando demasiadorapido o demasiado lento, Ileve su segadora amas con su centro de servicio Sears o con unotto centro de servicio cualificado.

CARBURADORSu carburador tiene un chorro principal fijo noajustable para controlar la mezcla. Si su motorno esta funcionando en forma adecuada debidoa problemas que se sospecha vienen del carbu-rador, Ileve su segadora a contacto con su centrode servicio Sears o con un otro centro de serviciocualificado para repararla y/o ajustarla.IMPORTANTE: Nunca manipule el reguladordel motor, el que ha sido ajustado en la fabricapara la velocidad del motor adecuada. Puedeser peligroso hacer funcionar el motor a unavelocidad por sobre el ajuste de alta velocidadde la fabrica. Si cree que la velocidad alta regu-lada del motor necesita ajuste,contacto con sucentro de servicio Sears o con un otro centrode servicio cualificado, el que cuenta con elequipo adecuado y la experiencia para hacerlos ajustes necesarios.

Inmediatamente prepare su segadora para elalmacenamiento al final de cada temporada o sila unidad no se va a usar pot 30 dias o mas.

SEGADORACuando se va a guardar la segadora por ciertoperiodo de tiempo, limpiela cuidadosamente,remueva toda la mugre, la grasa, las hojas, etc.Guardela en un area limpia y seca.1. Limpie toda la segadora (Yea "LIMPIEZA"

MOTORSISTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLEIMPORTANTE: Es importante evitar quese formen depositos de coma en partesfundamentales del sistemade combustible talescomo el carburador, el filtro del combustible,la mangura del combustible o en el estanquedurante el almacenamiento. Los combustiblesmezclados con alcohol (conocido comegasohol o que tienen etanol o metanol)Pueden atraer humedad, Io que conduce a laseparacion y a la formaci6n de acidos duranteel almacenamiento. La gasolina acida puededanar el sistema de combustible de un motordurante el perido de almacenamiento.• Vaciar el dep6sito del carburante poniendo

en marcha el motor y dejandolo funcionarhasta que el carburante termine y elcarburador este vacio.

• Nunca use los productos para limpieza delcarburador o del motor en el estanque decombustible pues se pueden producir dafiospermanentes.

• Use combustible nuevo la pr6xima tempo-rada.

AVlSO: El estabilizador de combustible es unaalternativa aceptable para reducir a un minimola formaci6n de dep6sitos de goma en el com-bustible durante el periodo de almacenamiento.Agregue estabilizador a la gasolina en elestanque de combustible o en el envase para elalmacenamiento. Siempre siga la proporci6n demezcla que se encuentra en el envase del esta-bilizador. Haga funcionar el motor por Io menos10 minutos despues de agregar el estabilizador,para permitir que este Ilegue al carburador. Nodrene la gasolina del estanque de gasolina y elcarburador si se esta usando estabilizador decombustible.

ACEITE DEL MOTOR

Drene el aceite (con el motor caliente) y cambielocon aceite de motor limpio. (Vea "MOTOR" en lasecci6n de Mantenimento de este manual.)

ClLINDRO1. Remueva la bujia.2. Vacie una onza (29 ml) de aceite a traves

del agujero de la bujia en el cilindro.3. Tire la manilla de arranque lentamente unas

cuantas veces para distribuir el aceite.4. Vuelva a montar la nueva bujia.

OTROS• No guarde la gasolina de una temporada a la

otra.• Cambie el envase de la gasolina si se emp-

ieza a oxidar. La oxidaci6n y/o la mugre ensu gasolina produciran problemas.

• Si es posible, guarde su unidad en un recintocerrado y cObrala para protegerla contra elpolvo y la mugre.

• Cubra su unidad con un forro protectoradecuado que no retenga la humedad. Nouse plastico. El plastico no puede respirar, Ioque permite la formaci6n de condensaci6n,Io que producira la oxidaci6n de su unidad.

IMPORTANTE: Nunca cubra la segadoramientras el motor y las areas de escape todaviaestan calientes._I, PRECAUCl6N: Nunca almacene lasegadora con gasolina en el estanque dentrode un edificio en donde los gases puedenalcanzar una llama expuesta o una chispa.Permita que se enfrie el motor antes dealmacenarla en algQn recinto cerrado.

Engine Power Rating Information

The gross power rating for individual gas engine models is labeled in accordance with SAE (So-ciety of Automo-tive Engineers) code J11940 (Small Engine Power & Torque Rating Procedure),and rating performance has been obtained and corrected in accordance with SAE J1995 (Revision2002-5). Actual gross engine power will be lower and is affected by, among other things, ambi-ent operating conditions and engine-to-engine variability. Given both the wide array of productson which engines are placed and the variety of environmental issues applicable to operating theequipment, the gas engine will not develop the rated gross power when used in a given piece ofpower equipment (actual "on-site" or net horsepower). This difference is due to a variety of factorsincluding, but not limited to, accessories (air cleaner, exhaust, charging, cooling, carburetor, fuelpump, etc.), application limitations, ambient operating conditions (temperature, humidity, altitude),and engine-to-engine variability. Due to manufacturing and capacity limitations, Briggs & Strattonmay substitute an engine of higher rated power for this Series engine.
