INSTALLATION

IMPORTANT: It is vital that all hose lengths are kept to a minimum. Pressure and flow loss is increased as hoselength increases and/or bore size decreases. Pressure and return lines in excess of 3.5 metres should becompensated with an increase in bore size.

As a general rule:

Bigger Nominal Bore Hose = Better Winch Performance. In all installation work on a hydraulic system, cleanliness andaccuracy ar essential so that the hydraulic system functions properly.

04-1 WINCH INSTALLATION

WINCH INSTALLATION04MOUNTING

Figs. 3 & 4 show the mounting dimensions for the Superwinch H10/12/14P.

Because of the rating of these winches, it is important that the mountings are secure. M12 x 1.5 pitch 8.8 Grade HighTensile Steel bolts must be used in order to sustain the loads imposed on the winch mounting. Remember that thewinch is only as strong as it’s mountings.

All eight mount holes should be used. Use only the threaded holes provided, Do not drill and tap new hole(s). Do notweld the winch or any parts of the winch. After mounting and tightening all mounting bolts, place the winch in freespooland check the drum rotation. The drum on an incorrectly mounted winch may bind causing poor freespooling anddecreased winch performance. If the drum does bind loosen all mounting bolts. If the drum now rotates freely, tightenthe bolts a bit at a time, checking thee drum rotation until the winch is securely fastened. If the drum continues to bind itis probable that one or more of the mounting system’s holes is out of position and requires correction.

Precautions for foot down mounting.

1. The plate to which the winch is fastened must be 6mm thick min. steel.2. All four mounting holes in the bottom of each support casting must be used to mount the winch.

Precautions for rail mounting.

1. The angle iron used for the rails must be 50mm x 50mm x 6mm or larger.2. All four mounting holes (2 in each side of the casting) must be used.

Mounting Dimensions for Winches

* Dimensions for 653001 onlyDimensions in mm.

ROPE INSTALLATION

The rope must be of good quality, have a steel core and meet the following specification :

1. Unwind the rope by rolling it out along the ground with the tapered end nearest to the winch. NEVER wind the ropestraight onto the drum from a coil.

2. Dis-engage the Freespool.

3. Insert the tapered end of the rope into the cross-hole in the end of the drum and secure by tightening the setscrew.

4. Re-engage the Freespool.

5. Carefully run the winch in the "Winch In" direction. Keeping tension on the rope spool 5 or 6 wraps of rope neatlyonto the drum.

6. Apply moderate tension (approx. 700 kg to the rope. Carefully run the winch in the "Winch In" direction. Ensure thelayers are neatly wrapped onto the drum. This will minimize damage to the lower layers of rope when a load is applied.

PULLING OUT THE ROPE

Disengage the Freespool. With a pair of gloves on, pull out the rope and secure to anchor or load, check that there areat least 5 turns left on the Drum. Re-engage the Freespool.

GENERAL

Avoid pulling a load at more than a 15 degree angle in relation to the winch. This will reduce wear and tear on the winchand the cable.

Note : The winch is designed such that it cannot be freespooled when the drum is under load.

MANUAL FREESPOOL OPERATION

1. To disengage the freespool (if engaged) grip the freespool handle, pull in the trigger and move the handle upward.

2. Pull out the cable by hand, but leave at least 5 wraps on the drum.

3. Engage the freespool by gripping the handle, pulling in trigger in and moving the handle downward. Gently power in &then out and the trigger spring will spring in fully.

DO NOT ATTEMPT to pull a load until the drum is properly engaged.

4. Attach the load.

5. Operate the winch.

PNEUMATIC FREESPOOL OPERATION

1. Disengage the drum by operating the pneumatic control valve.

2. Pull out the cable by hand, but leave at least 5 wraps on the drum.

3. Attach the load.

4. Engage the drum by moving the control valve lever to the appropriate position. The freespool mechanism will springreturn but the drum will not engage until it has been rotated a little, by hand.

DO NOT ATTEMPT to pull a load until the drum is properly engaged.

Note : The mechanism is designed such that it cannot be disengaged when the drum is under load greater than 50 kg.

5. Operate the winch.

FREESPOOL OPERATION 07

Page 12: Owner’s Manual H10P, H12P, H14P - Superwinchsuperwinch.nl/media/attachment/file/h/1/h12p_h14p_owner_s_manua… · Owner’s Manual H10P, H12P, H14P HYDRAULICALLY POWERED WINCHES

1. KEEP A TIGHTLY WOUND WIRE ROPE DRUM.Do not allow the wire rope to become loosely wound. A loosely-wound spool allows a wire rope under load to workits way down into the layers of wire rope on the drum. When this happens, the wire rope may become wedgedwithin the body of the windings damaging the wire rope. To prevent this problem, keep the wire rope tightly andevenly wound on the drum at all times. A good practice is to rewind the wire rope under a tension of approx. 500 kgafter each use. For example, this can be achieved by attaching the hook to a car and recovering with the winchusing the car’s brakes to control the load.

2. DO NOT ALLOW MOTOR TO OVERHEAT.Remember, the winch is for intermittent use only. During long or heavy pulls the motor will get hot. The internal partswill be hotter than the case. To check the motor temperature, stop winching and carefully touch the motor case, if themotor is uncomfortably warm, allow the motor to cool before continuing - keep the engine running to recharge thebattery during this break.

3. USE A PULLEY BLOCK AND SHACKLE FOR HEAVY LOADS.To maximize winch and wire rope life, use a pulley block and shackle to double line heavier loads.

4. The pull required to start a load moving is often much greater than the pull required to keep it moving. AVOIDFREQUENT STOPPING AND STARTING during a pull.

5. PREVENT KINKS BEFORE THEY OCCUR. (Fig. 5a) This is the start of a kink. At this time, the wire rope should be straightened.

(Fig. 5b) The wire rope was pulled and the loop has tightened to a kink. The wire rope is now permanently damagedand must be replaced.

(Fig. 5c) The result of kinking is that each strand pulls a different amount causing the strands under greatest tensionto break and reduce load capacity of the wire rope. The wire rope must be replaced.

RUNNING IN

For optimum performance all hydraulic motors need running in. Run for approx 1 Hr at 30% of Max. Oil Pressure.

LUBRICATION

Freespool Handle (manual freespool version)- lubricate regularly with light oil.

Drum Bearings - these are self-lubricating but are lubricated with syncho gell bearing grease when assembled.

Gearbox - The gearbox is prelubricated with Syncho gel bearing grease or equivalent at the factory.

MAINTENANCE

After the first 1 hour of operation :Check freespool mechanism action. Lubricate freespool mechanism with light oil. Check tightness of mounting bolts andhydraulic connections.

Monthly : Check brake function.

After 10 hours of winching or annually : Change Gearbox grease (Approx. 100g Syncho gel Superwinch Part No. 55-95012). Check brake function. Lubricatefreespool mechanism with light oil. Check tightness of mounting bolts and hydraulic connections.

Planetary Gearbox :The winch is delivered from the factory prelubricated. Change the grease in the gearbox at least once a year. Thegrease recommended is Syncho gel and is available from Superwinch Part No. 55-95012 (100 g).
