Message from our Principal
Owl Talk- Taryn Galt
updated periodically by
both parents and students,
must become normal be-
ginning in the 6th grade
Nothing could lead to a
greater transformation of
our schools than moti-
vated and goal centered
parents and students.
Even though the article
talked about 6th grade, we
would like to participate
in this activity at a level
appropriate for children in
grades 3-5. Your child
will be given a piece of paper with a place for
short term academic goals
and a place for some long
term goals. Please have a
meaningful conversation
with your child about their
goals. You might discuss
how goals impact the di-
rection for their future.

Olsen Park Parents,
Recently our superintendent, Mr.
Schroder, shared part of an article
written by Bill Betzen. The arti-cle stated:
Parents should be writing about
goals and dreams for their child in
letters to their child. Schools can
encourage this. Students should
be reading those letters and then
writing about their own personal
goals in letters to themselves.
Both letters should be updated
regularly and archived in a visible
place of respect in their school, passed many times daily by all
students. These goals should not
be forgotten. Such a process will
lead to many priceless conversa-
tions between parent and child,
and high achievement levels in
school.
Credible goals, documented and
Once the parent and child
sign the goal form we will
post them on a bulletin
board in the cafeteria. We
hope the practice of setting goals will be one small way
to plants seeds of possibili-
ties within your child.

Olsen Park Elementary
Olsen Park is starting out great!
The 5th graders took a field trip to the Marchapalooza, (Battle of the bands) between Tascosa,
Caprock, Amarillo High, and Palo Duro on October 16, 2012. The fourth graders went on a field
trip to the Amarillo Art Museum. The kindergarteners went to the fair, and they will be visiting a pumpkin patch too.
Here’s some important dates this month , so we’ll be prepared! On October 19, we get to have a
Snack sale for Outdoor Education. You better look pretty on the 25th of October ,because it’s
picture day! We did a whole lot of fun things this month… but we have more fun things coming
in November! Like on November 20th , we get to have a Hat Day! An d if you didn’t get to smile
big on October 25th, you can do it on November 30th! We’ll I guess that’s all the important and
fun dates I have for you, so I guess I’ll tell you more next month!

Just cut out the box tops
and bring them to school.
Let’s get started collecting those box tops!
til you see your leaf ap-
pear on your paper! It
will be the color of your
crayon! You can make
many leaf rubbings in
several different fall col-
ors like red, yellow, or-
ange, purple, brown, and
gold.
Please bring all of your
box tops to school
and give them to your
teacher by October
19th! Start now so we can
earn money for
our school!! Please label with your teacher’s
name so you can get
credit. You can find box tops on most boxed
goods like cereal,
yogurt, etc. boxes.
Ingredients:
1 bag Mini Pretzels
1 package White chocolate
bark 1 bag Green or brown M&M’s
Red and yellow food coloring
Wax paper
1 Tbsp. Crisco
Glass bowl
Spatula
Microwave
Here is a yummy, fun, and
safe fall treat for kids!
Make sure you have parents
help, first you need to get your bowl, make sure there is no
water in it, or the chocolate
will harden .Add your choco-
late to the bowl and put it in
the microwave. Every five to
ten seconds, take it out and
stir. When it is melted add
Crisco and food coloring to the
chocolate, stir well. Finally,
you can dip the pretzel in the
chocolate and add your
M&M’s and lay them on wax
paper. .Now you can enjoy.
The American people get to
vote for a new president every
four years. 2012 is an election
year. This year there are two people called candidates run-
ning for President. A presi-
dent can run for a second
term, so President Barack
Obama is running again.
President Obama is from the
Democratic Party. The other
candidate is Mitt Romney. He
is from the
Republican Party. You do not
have to be a Republican or a Democrat to run for president.
One of the requirements to be
a candidate for president is
that you have to be 35 years
or older. On November 6th the country will vote for the
president. Some people will
vote early because they will
be out of the country or busy
that day. Most people make
their decision on whom to
vote for by watching debates
on TV to see what each candi-
date will do to help our coun-
try be the best it can be. You
have to deicide who you will think will do the best job
leading our country.
The biggest issues people
worry about are education, health care, and money spent
on war (national security).
Have you done your research?
Who would you vote for No-
vember 6th if you were 18?
Third, fourth, and fifth grad-
ers are Olsen Park will con-
duct their own mock election,
so listen and learn all you can about your candidates!

The Heroes of Olympus is packed with adventure! This is for people who like Greek mythology. It is about a
teenager named Percy Jackson. He is the son of Poseidon/Neptune. He has two friends one named Frank Zhang

Gaea awaken before they get there? You will have to read it to find out!
If you don’t like myths, magic, and monsters, you might like The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It is about a cater-

A person of character is . . . a good person, someone to look up to, to admire, A person of character is someone who
knows the difference between right and wrong, always tries to do what is right, and sets a good example for every-
one. Also a person would make the world a better place and lives according to the six pillars of character, which are
trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. For this month we will be talking about words that describe Trustworthiness:
Integrity- do: Stand up for your beliefs, follow your conscience, always have courage, and be honorable and up-
right. Don’t: lose heart if you fail or don’t get what you want. Reliability-do: Keep your promises, honor your words ands commitments, be dependable, do what your supposed to
do, return what you burrow, pay your debts, and be on time.
Honesty-do: Tell the truth and nothing but truth, be sincere. Don’t: lie, cheat, steal, and don’t be sneaky and decep-tive.
Loyalty- do: Stand by and protects family and friends, be a good friend, look out for those who care about you, and
keep secrets between the people you trust. Don’t: betray trust, let your friends hurt themselves, treat others how you
would like to be treated, and don’t ask a friend to hurt other or gossip.
These Olsen Owls received Outstanding Owls for being trustworthy: Ruth Vasquez, Deaven Tijernia, and Brandon.
Great job, Owls!
