150 yrs of Reconstruction... marches on... (viewpoints and opinions below are my own , not the SCV’s)

2015 officially ended the Susquentenial of the War of 1861-1865 but we now enter the Susquentenial of the dark ages known as Reconstruction.

You cannot tell the true story of our ancestors by, doing what most schools and historians have always done, skip reconstruction. Which was the case when I was in school in the late 70’s early 80’s, and it’s the same with my children today. It’s simply not discussed... AT ALL Here in lies the second problem with getting the truth out there. It’s an ugly past, it’s where you will find the roots to this countries racial divisions and the south has always unjustly shouldered the blame.

The attrocities committed during the war were doubled down on against a defeated peoples by disenfranchising the citizens of the south. Northern politicians called carpetbaggers, for the distinctive bag they carried, came south pitting newly emancipated slaves against poor whites who had already lost everything. These northerns, driven by greed and revenge, placed those very emancipated people in political offices and state legislations. Directed them what laws to pass and where to divert state funds. These actions further plundered what little was left in the south.

Commanders Message Continued

Land that was set aside to be divided up to the newly freed peoples ended up being sold to northern railroads and land speculators. This is where the 40 acres and a mule concept came from, and also where it went. States where divided into miltiary controlled districts. Enforcement of new laws and unjust actions were still at the hands of the yankee soldier. Anyone who fought for or supported the Confederacy was not permitted to vote, testify at commitees, own firearms or file grievances and in some cases they were even denied property. If you were aa former Confederate officer you weren’t even considered an American citizen until you were given a pardon by the President of the United States. Gen Robert E. Lee signed his amnesty oath and applied for pardon on October 2, 1865 but then, Licoln appointed, Secretary of State William H. Steward gave Lee’s application to a friend as a souvenir. It soon became lost to history.

After it was found Lee’s full citizenship rights were finally posthmously restored by a joint congressional resolution in 1975, effective June 13, 1865. We are often told that had Lincoln lived the transition would have been much softer and consilatory. The actions of Steward with Lee’s prove to me that nothing would have changed if Lincoln had lived.

I often wonder how differently things would be today had southerns been permitted to keep their dignity... had emancipation been gradual and had southerns been permitted to participate in the process. The inconvenient truth to reconstruction is the ugliness it helped create.

These are difficult discussions gents. Things most Yankees wont admit or face. Heck most of US don’t want to face the ugly truth of what reconstruction created. We separate ourselves from it all the time. The ugliness of Jim crow laws and the rise of the KKK both have their roots in reconstruction. It’s an ugly history that some are afraid of.

We shouldn’t ignore our history but like the war itself we must dive into it and gain the knowledge that our ancestors were not these evil racist people we are told they were.

The subsequent destruction of the south during the war, the continued pilfering of her wealth up until the begining of the 20th century gave generations of illiterate people, poor living conditions and the stigma attactched to her.

It has taken a century to recover economically from the destruction of the war and reconstruction. Arguable some areas of the south has yet to recover.

Make no mistake, Reconstruction continues... The destruction of all things confederate continues. They claim they are stamping out offensive history... But this is just a continuation of reconstruction. They must Kill American’s “rebel spirit.” It’s been the goal since 1865. The same spirit that created the Declaration of Independence, led us to defeat the British “TWICE” and secure the Constitution was systematically killed by Lincoln.

Fearful of that “rebel spirit”, the Fed govt began requiring citizens to swear an oath of allegience to that federal government.... Even the Pledge of Allegiance has questionable roots. Accept nothing at face value gentlemen, research, read and share. It’s important to never forget the rebel spirit. It lives on in all of us. Detractors like to call the Confederacy the “Lost Cause.” They attack the countries memory by eliminating monuments and history. They do this because Causes can rise again but replaced memories will never return.

Deo Vindice Commander

Brian “PQ” Piaquadio

Mercy Street DVD $24.99

Alexandria, Virginia, 1862. Mary Phinney, a staunch New England abolitionist, and Emma Green, a naïve Confederate belle, collide at Mansion House, the Green family’s luxury hotel that has been transformed into a Union Army hospi-tal. Ruled under martial law, the border town of Alexandria is now the melting pot of the region, filled with soldiers, civilians, female volunteers, doctors, wounded men from both sides, runaway slaves, prostitutes, speculators, and spies.

PBS series was not too bad, gave a solid middle of the road perspective of the war. If there is enough interest in this series it may return next year. Worth a watch
