An essential step in learning and using any language is the

acquisition of a working vocabulary. Many methods have

been devised to help with this acquisition, all of them stress-

ing the fundamental importance of mastering the words

most frequently used. The Owen and Goodspeed word-lists—

in which Homeric terms are arranged according to frequency

of usage, divided into categories according to parts of speech,

and presented in an easy-to-use format— are particularly

helpful.

The word-lists are based in part upon Gehring's famed

Index Homericus and are designed to help the student learn

Homeric words in a systematic way, thereby making the

reading of Homer a rewarding and natural experience.

WILLIAM BISHOPOWEN and EDGARJOHNSON GOOD-SPEED were the authors of many articles and books on

classical subjects. CLYDE PHARR is professor of classical

languages in the University of Texas and author of Homeric

Greek: A Book for Beginners^ also published by the Univer-

sity of Oklahoma Press. It is his belief that Homeric Vocabu-

laries is indispensable for those who would begin the study

of Greek with Homer, as well as for those who would deepen

their knowledge of Greek.

FOREWORDThe course of English literature might have been different

if Keats, instead of looking into Chapman's Homer, could

have looked into Homer in Homer's own language. Hom-er and the literature and thinking of his age continue to

present a rewarding field for today's scholars, both young

and old. This book is designed to make their efforts

easier, to facilitate their understanding and mastery of the

Homeric vocabulary.

An essential step in learning and using any language

is the acquisition of a working vocabulary. Many methods

have been devised to help with this acquisition, all of them

stressing the fundamental importance of mastering the

words most frequently used. The Owen and Goodspeed

word-lists, in which Homeric terms are arranged accord-

ing to frequency of usage, divided into categories accord-

ing to parts of speech, and presented in an easy-to-use

format, are particularly helpful.

The Homeric Vocabularies of Owen and Goodspeed

has been used successfully by teachers and students over

many years. If, during this long period of use, the book

has had any major defect, it has been—according to today's

students—the separation of the Greek words from their

English meanings. In previous editions, the Greek list was

in the first part of the book and the corresponding English

Page 8: Owen and Goodspeed - Homeric Vocabularies

Foreword

list in the back part, an arrangement that, according to

some, required unnecessary and occasionally frustrating

labor. In this edition, the Greek word and its English

meaning are shown on the same page. This arrangement

and the addition of three indexes should make an im-

portant book even more useful.

PREFACEThis series of word-lists is the outgrowth of the convic-

tion that the ordinary way of acquiring Homeric vocabu-

lary is both wasteful and ineffectual. The chief difficulty

in learning to read Homer lies in the large and varied

character of the vocabulary required, and these lists have

been prepared in order to help the student to learn Hom-

eric words in a systematic and practical way. A moderate

number of words learned each day and constantly re-

viewed will rapidly enlarge the student's working vocabu-

lary, and steadily better his equipment for sight-reading.

He will gradually be emancipated from the constant use

of the lexicon, while his knowledge of Greek words will

gain rather than lose in precision and permanence. Each

day a few new words should be learned, and those pre-

viously learned should be rapidly reviewed. The student

will very shordy find himself possessed of a vocabulary

which will gready facilitate the work of translation, and

make the reading of Homer at sight a pleasant and na-

tural exercise. In short, it is believed that the mastery of

these lists will secure for the student that much-talked-of

thing, the abiUty to read Homer; and make of his study

of it a means, not simply of discipHne, but of enjoyment

and culture.

PREFACE TO THE SECONDEDITION

The demand for a new edition of these lists has given

us the opportunity to correct some misprints and to mod-

ify a few definitions. The numberings remain unchanged

throughout. Attention may be called to the fact that in the

statistics of verb occurrences, compounds have been reck-

oned with their primitives. In this we have followed the

procedure of Gehring's Index Homericus, upon the ma-

terials of which our statistics are based.
