Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

"If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone." Gossip has become a modern pastime. We publish magazines with the latest celebrity chatter, and create

websites and blogs that reverberate with "opinions" about public and private personalities alike. Many people utilize social media to rant

about the behavior of others, and the good old-fashioned coffee break still provides ample opportunity to reveal the offenses we have suffered or to dish out dirt about people who aren't present.

Although it can take many forms, at its core, gossip is about tarnishing people's reputations without giving them a chance to

defend themselves. Today, Jesus recommends a different approach. He encourages us to deal directly with people, which in effect means

to treat them with dignity and respect. Rather than making preconceived judgments about another's behavior, Jesus asks us to

talk to the person involved ... first. Instead of running around venting our frustrations elsewhere, or even "tattling" on someone

who has legitimately wronged us, we are called to address our concern head-on, with charity and compassion.

As Jesus suggests, "If he listens to you, you have won over your brother." In other words, by speaking directly to those who have offended us, we actually have the chance to resolve the situation before it grows out of proportion. Of course this doesn't always

work; that's why Jesus mentions the other steps to take if necessary. But we will be the ones to blame for the continuation of the conflict

unless we follow the Lord's advice and give peace a chance.

KNIGHTS OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem is the only lay institution of the Vatican State charged with the task of providing for the needs of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and for all the activities and initiatives necessary to

support the Christian presence in the Holy Land. The Order’s support for the Christians in the Holy Land does not just take the form of financial contributions and prayers, important though we recognize that these are. All of the Order’s Lieutenancies arrange formal pilgrimages, in the course of which Members do not simply view and explore the Holy Sites, but also have the opportunity to meet the people whom they are supporting and assure them that they are not forgotten. The Pilgrim Shell is the most significant decoration of the Order. It may be awarded by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem to any Knight or Lady of the Order in good standing, who makes a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and prays at the Holy Sepulchre of our Risen Lord. This decoration consists of a scallop shell, the ancient badge of a pilgrim, in oxidized silver, in the center of which is placed the cross of the Order in red fired enamel bordered with gold.

The Order is charged, in its Constitution: To strengthen in its members the practice of Christian

life, in absolute fidelity to the Supreme Pontiff and according to the teachings of the Church, observing as its foundation the principles of charity which make the Order a fundamental means of assistance to the Holy Land.

To sustain and aid the charitable, cultural and social works and institutions of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, particularly those of and in the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, with which the Order maintains its traditional ties.

To support the preservation and propagation of the Faith in those lands, and promote interest in this work not only among Catholics scattered throughout the world, who are united in charity by the symbol of the Order, but also among all other Christians.

To uphold the rights of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land.

Next Sunday is an important Feast in the life of the Order: The Triumph of the Cross. Some of our recent members will be awarded their Pilgrim Crosses at the 10:00 a.m. Mass.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

The RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, will start up again at our parish the first Tuesday of October (October 7th). The RCIA is the normal avenue for people of other faiths or people who have never been baptized to enter the Catholic Church. The RCIA is also utilized for those who may have been baptized Catholic but who never completed their sacraments of initiation (Communion and Confirmation). If you, or someone you know, have never been baptized and you wish to become Catholic, consider attending one of two inquiry sessions — Tuesday, September 23rd or Tuesday, September 30th — at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Conference Room. (Enter at the Parish Office.) You only need to attend one of those two evenings. People will be available to answer any question you may have about the program. Course books and a syllabus also will be available. Likewise, if you have been baptized as a Catholic and never had your other sacraments or if you have been baptized in another faith and wish to become Catholic, please attend one of the two inquiry sessions for more information and materials. RCIA begins in earnest Tuesday, October 7th and meets every Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. until a month after Easter. There is also a component of the RCIA — the RCIC — for children and teens who may need their sacraments. Please call the parish office for more information.

Virtus Training Saturday, September 13th

Training from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the Solar Room. The Virtus Program deals with the awareness and prevention of the sexual abuse of children. Due to the content of the program,

no children are permitted to attend the training. Anyone 18 years or older must be Virtus trained in order to

reserve your seat for Virtus training and to assure we have enough materials for everyone.

St. Vincent De Paul Society Join the 7th Annual St. Vincent De Paul Friends of the Poor Walk/Run

September 20, 2014 at Lemon Lake County Park

This walk raises funds enabling the Society to help those in need with assistance of food, rent or utilities.

Contributions raised from this event are returned directly to our parish society to benefit those we serve.

Registration is from 9:00-10:00 a.m. The walk will begin at 10:00 a.m.

Consider joining us for a pleasant walk with lunch to follow. Pick-up registration/waiver forms and pledge sheets in the

Parish Office. These will be collected at the walk.

As is tradition at St. Thomas More School, after the first All School Mass of the new school year, all new

students and faculty members are “officially” introduced to the student body and welcomed with a

small gift from the Student Council. This year we also

For all those students beginning their final year at St. Thomas More

School as eighth graders, they were presented to all those at Mass wearing the official

The Emmaus Program The Emmaus Program is a four week adult formation

program for ministers, parishioners, teachers and catechists. The Fall Program will be offered in October at

St. Michael the Archangel, 1 West Wilhem Street in Schererville.

Topic: “Reconciliation” Fr. Martin Dobrzynski — Presenter

Fr. Martin Dobrzynski is Pastor of St. Michael Parish in Schererville and Director for the Diocesan Office of Worship.

He holds a Masters in Liturgy from the University of Notre Dame. He teaches for the Diocesan Lay Ecclesial Ministry

Program and is a frequent presenter for the Emmaus Program.

This four session program will focus on the public life of Jesus, who not only forgave sins, but also made plain the effect of

forgiveness. He reintegrated forgiven sinners into the community of the People of God.

Our speaker will lead us through the importance of reconciliation in our lives and how it can be assisted by the

Sacrament of Reconciliation. Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:30 p.m.– 8:30 p.m.

Music Ministry Additional parishioners are needed for the following

St. Thomas More musical groups:

Handbell Choir We are in need of three new Handbell Choir members in grades

5 through adult to join our Handbell Choirs for the fall. It is a very enjoyable, fulfilling ministry.

Handbell Choir members need to be available to practice on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. on a regular basis and to play

at Saturday 5:30 p.m. Masses, Christmas Eve Mass and occasional other Masses on the weekend.

You do not need to read music; we will teach you. Please consider joining this valuable

Youth Chorale We are currently accepting registrations for the Youth Chorale. We need older

youth who are skilled at singing harmony, boys with changing voices to sing 3-part harmony and

young, energetic choir members looking for a challenge. The Chorale is open to all parishioners in grades two through high

school. We sing twice a month at the Saturday 5:30 p.m. Masses. Practices are from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. on the days that we sing (prior to Mass). We also sing for Christmas Eve 5:30 p.m.

Holy Name Society Attention all men of the parish!

Our spiritual retreat leader will be Rev. Gerald Schweitzer. The Rosary & Benediction will conclude the evening.

You Did It For Me Grant* was diagnosed with autism 5 years ago and struggles to

find acceptance or make friends at his local public school. Since last year, he’s been going to an after-school program hosted by his local Catholic Charities agency and spending time with a high school “buddy” who helps him with homework and social

activities. Grant’s mom said the difference has been remarkable: “This has changed the way he sees the world.”

beautiful mid-west many years ago as we visit historic Cedarburg, WI in October.

See how the settlers made their own woolen goods, the types of homes they built and visit many gift, antique, art and

other unusual shops throughout the town. We are hoping for some beautiful fall foliage as a backdrop to

this picturesque area as an added bonus. More details regarding lunch, costs, etc. will be forthcoming.
