Introduction

The Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice

conducts research activities in four basic fields, i.e. educational

sciences, humanities, social and behavioural sciences, and historical

sciences. The structure of research priorities in individual fields

depends on research capacity and qualification structure of individual

research areas at the Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University.

Research activities are currently supported by the national grant

agencies (APVV, VEGA, KEGA, VVGS UPJŠ), and within historical

sciences by the national agencies, grant agencies, and HORIZONT

2020 (Schedule 1). The research activities in individual fields foster

cooperation with foreign universities and national academic and

research institutions (Schedule 2). Involvement of research teams of

the Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in the national and

foreign research networks is the essential precondition for applying for

research support in international projects, in research infrastructures

of pan-European interest of social sciences and humanities (the

European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures, ESFRI).

3. Research and technical infrastructure. Specialised laboratories of the Faculty of

Arts and their equipment a) Laboratory of experimental phonetics and communication – Language, information and communication laboratory (Licolab)Laboratory missionIn terms of organisational structure, the Language, Information and Communication Laboratory falls within the Department of Slovak Studies, Slavonic Philologies, and Communication of the Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University. Emergence of the laboratory as an experimental research, communication and phonetic unit was necessitated by the fact that the experimental research of one of the basic levels of language – the sound level – is the starting point for any further linguistic research. The laboratory was established in 1969 and has built on more than 40-year long tradition of experimental phonetics at the Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Prešov (1970 – 2011). Language, Information and Communication Laboratory serves both for scientific research conducted at high international professional level and the teaching of phonetics and phonology – the disciplines that open up the linguistic knowledge.

Grants currently implementedGrants currently implemented in the laboratory are:APVV-15-0492 Speech audiometry in the Romani language (Principal investigator: prof. Ing. Július Zimmermann, CSc.). Period of the project: 07/2016-12/2019 APVV-15-0307 Anticipation phonetic strategies for simultaneous and consecutive interpreting (Principal investigator: prof. Dr. Rudolph Sock, PhD.). a) Laboratory of experimental phonetics and communication – Language, information and communication laboratory (Licolab)Laboratory equipmentThe laboratory is equipped with instruments intended for analysis and resynthesis of a speech signal for phonetics, logopaedia, and for development of speech tests in otology. For the purpose of preparing speech samples and extensive speech corpuses, the laboratory is equipped with a recording studio, the system for signal stream recording from mass media, and the field recorders for acquisition of sound communication signals in exterior. Computer Speech laboratory CSL 4500 environment, including specialised libraries allowing to measure segmental and supra-segmental features, resynthesize a signal after a change in detected parameters, and measure special attributes of speech after pathological changes in the articulatory system of a speaker is used for phonetical analysis of language. Another version of the speech signal analysis program is S-Tools STx. The analysis methods built on wavelet transformation are conducted in Matlab language. For the purpose of otological measuring of perception of percipients in speech and tone audiometry the laboratory is equipped with the comprehensive Madsen Astera2 system and Avant A2D+ system. A$E system is intended for psychoacoustic measuring of detection, discrimination and identification of phonemes and suprasegments. Standardisation of audio chain, including acoustic pressure converters, is ensured by G.R.A.S. calibrator. The equipment can be used also in phonetics to examine the segmental and suprasegmental features of a speech signal. The measured values represent a good indicator of correct and standard pronunciation and are useful in logopaedia practice for treatment of articulatory insufficiency. Testing of auditory system at ORL Departments after surgical application of hearing implants and external hearing aids is another significant area of use. Measuring of speech perception process – detection, discrimination and identification may be beneficial in perceptual phonetics and in neuroscience.

The specific type of expertise (methods) that can be performed using the equipment The algorithm of measuring usually consists of the following phases: collection of representative speech material of sufficient statistical significance; generating of bubble noises according to the required spectrum and SNR values; standardisation of both of input signals according to RMS value; measuring of signals in temporal domain (quantity of sonantic nuclei, pauses, tempo, rhythm); measuring in frequency domain by Fourier analysis, LPC analysis and cepstral analysis (both immediate and long-term spectrum, broad-band and narrow-band sonographic analysis, basic tone, harmonic components); detection of short acoustic events and transients by wavelet transformation; statistical modelling through HMM; programmed automatic signal resynthesis; calibration of equipment for perception tests in the laboratory with 15 workstations; statistical processing of results of measuring and perception by inductive statistics; interpretation and graphic presentation of results.

Institutions that also use the equipment – Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice– Unités de recherche – Linguistique, langues et parole, L’Université de Strasbourg– Department of Electronics and Multimedia Telecommunications, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Technical University in Košice.

Additional informationThe laboratory equipment may also be used for testing of comprehensiveness of speech degraded by noise with SNR values and frequency spectrum of masking sounds as optional measuring parameters.

c) Psychological laboratory Laboratory missionIn term of organisational structure, the laboratory is the part of the Department of Psychology of Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University. The unofficial establishment of the laboratory dates back to 2013 when the Department moved to the new premises of Socrates building. This brought the opportunity for creating a specialised classroom. The establishment of the laboratory was necessitated especially by the need of using the advanced technologies in psychological research, with particular focus on preparation, creation, implementation and analysis of research of, in particular, but not limited to, experimental nature, requiring the advanced computer administration of stimulus materials and accurate recording of the reaction time and correctness of answers. The laboratory also specialises in advanced statistical data analysis. Nowadays the emphasis is put on updating of the existing equipment software and hardware and its extension. The perspectives include for instance the extension of the laboratory by physiological criteria, such as EEG and skin conductance. In general, the laboratory is used for planning, preparing, implementing and subsequent analysing of the advanced psychological research, thus counterbalancing the classical questionnaire methods (but allows working with them as well). It is used in research implemented by the members of the Department of Psychology, but also in research being part of the students’ final theses supervised by the Department members. The research is focused on the topics such as target activation, social priming, implicit attitudes, automatic cognitive associations, executive functions, attention, intelligence, decision-making, psychology of time, emotions, etc. Besides the implementation of research, the laboratory is used for teaching of academic subjects, such as Psychological Training, which use the special research equipment of the laboratory as well as for teaching of academic subjects, such as Statistics, which use the statistical software equipment of the laboratory.

Grants currently implementedGrants currently implemented in the laboratory are:VEGA 1/0924/15: Self-Regulation Processes in Attainment of Distal GoalsIn this research, the emphasis is put on activation of goals by social priming and on implicit rates referring to this activation (implicit attitudes and automatic cognitive associations). However, the research is not limited to the above topics only, and the equipment of the laboratory is described in more detail below. This can give a clear picture of what type of research can be implemented/processed in the laboratory.

Laboratory equipmentIn addition to common equipment (such as computers, projector, amplifier, and loudspeakers), the laboratory is also equipped with specialised hardware and software allowing research preparation, data collection and subsequent analysis. d) Interpreter training laboratoryThe multimedia interpreter training laboratory forms the part of the technical equipment of the Department of British and American Studies of the Faculty of Arts of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University. The essential part of the technology is a digital interpreter training laboratory. It consists of the new digital professional interpreting and conference system pursuant to the respective standards (EN ISO 2603, EN ISO 4043 and IEC 914 etc.). This interpreting system is extended by the module for teaching of simultaneous interpreting and foreign languages. It simulates the conditions identical with live interpreting in the real environment at international events with simultaneous interpretation. The system is fully digital, i.e. the audio signals are processed and transmitted in digital form so that the pure and clear sound corresponding to the digital quality (dynamic range exceeding 90 dB) free of any interference and crosstalk is guaranteed. The system comprises a digital control and power unit, digital interpreting consoles (located in interpretation booths, 2 pcs in each booth), instructor’s unit LLK620D and virtual control centre LLK 510V (“Touch screen”). The communication system for both collective and individual communication with students is integrated in the system as well.A course instructor has the opportunity to control and change the signal source intended for translation. By means of the instructor’s unit and virtual control centre (LCD “Touch screen” panel) the course instructor can listen to individual channels/booths (there is also an option to choose a different channel for each ear), communicate with individual booths and with all booths simultaneously, etc. The system can be extended by additional booths (consoles), microphones and other equipment to which the virtual control “Touch screen” panel can be adapted automatically (additional control buttons corresponding to the number of channels/booths will be added automatically).
