PARTICIPANT REFLECTIONS My KSLP summer experience has been transformative. I am entering my position with a wealth of new and improved knowledge, an expanding professional network, and confidence that I can be effective in my role.

Mekia Love, Leadership Team ’09KIPP DC: KEY Academy Washington, D.C.

For the past decade, the KIPP School Leadership Programs (KSLP) have been training and developing aspiring school leaders for underserved communities across the country. Originally focused on developing principals who would found their own KIPP middle schools, in recent years KIPP has also begun recruiting and training school leaders to found high-performing elementary and high schools, as well as preparing leaders at all levels of the leadership pipeline. As a result, KSLP has expanded from its initial Fisher Fellowship program to six distinct leadership development programs serving teacher leaders to current school leaders.

KSLP programs are differentiated so that participants have opportunities to hone the leadership competencies and management skills necessary to be successful in their specific roles. Furthermore, programs are thoughtfully sequenced and gradated; as a result, as participants aspire to additional leadership responsibilities, there are appropriate and rigorous programming matches for them as they continue on their leadership journeys.

the programs KSLP is comprised of six distinct leadership development programs:

• FisherFellowship: A prestigious, year-long fellowship for individuals to found and lead new KIPP schools within existing KIPP regions.

• Miles Family Fellowship: A prestigious, year-long fellowship that prepares participants for the Fisher Fellowship while they serve as teachers with leadership roles within KIPP schools.

• Teacher Leader Program: A program for existing KIPP teachers to develop the leadership skills and competencies needed to be successful in roles such as grade level chair, department chair, and Saturday school coordinator.

• LeadershipTeamProgram: A program for existing KIPP teachers and leadership team members to develop the skills and competencies needed to be effective in school leadership roles such as vice principal, dean, and instructional coach.

• Principal Prep Program: A program specifically tailored to prepare successor school leaders with the skills and competencies that they will need to lead an existing KIPP school.

• Principal Development Programs: Professional development opportunities tailored for current KIPP school leaders who aspire to enhance their capacity as instructional leaders while deepening connections with other school and regional leaders in the KIPP network.

Are you interested in founding a high-performing KIPP school? The Fisher Fellowship is a one-year program that prepares Fellows to found and lead a new KIPP school in an underserved community.

The Fellowship includes intensive summer coursework in an academic setting, residencies at high-performing schools, and individualized coaching. Programming is designed to provide in-depth support and insight into processes and best practices involved in school leadership—ranging from establishing an instructional vision to developing efficient operating systems; from recruiting students to hiring teachers; and from curriculum development to community outreach. The Fellowship culminates in the following summer as fellows open their schools to their first classes of students.

overviewThe Fisher Fellowship includes:

• Orientation: A three-day orientation in May that provides opportunities to learn more about the programming year ahead, build relationships with new colleagues, and begin problem-solving through a leader’s perspective in a dynamic case study

• Summer Institute: Intensive five weeks of coursework, taught by dynamic faculty and educational leaders, in a university setting. New concepts uncovered in classroom discussions link to practical application through collaborative peer groups known as Learning Teams and through individualized coaching with a Leadership Guide.

• Residencies: Ten weeks of residencies at KIPP and other high-performing schools to fully immerse fellows in school culture and decision-making processes through interactions with students, parents, and teachers

• Intersessions: Four professional development retreats (Intersessions) for continued coursework

• SchoolDesignPlan: Development of a comprehensive business plan that guides all planning, design, and implementation of the fellow’s new school

• LeadershipCoaching: Bi-weekly individualized leadership coaching • GraduateCoursework: Opportunity to pursue a MA in Educational

Leadership and an administrative credential through National-Louis University

On a typical day, Fisher Fellows might spend time working through one of the ten sections of their School Design Plans, collaborating with colleagues in their regions, or visiting a high- performing school.

During their residency period, fellows can be found completing projects or activities such as observing teachers and providing feedback, assisting with team meetings, or shadowing school leaders. When fellows come together for Intersessions, they continue the coursework started during Summer Institute, but with a deeper focus on specific aspects of school leadership, such as performance management and school finance.

Once fellows complete their residency period and Intersessions, they spend time in their regions recruiting students and teachers, finalizing curriculum and budgets, and acquiring their charter.

• TheSkillfulTeacherIICourse: Designed to build leaders’ knowledge and skills for improving the practice of their teachers. The course develops leaders’ capacity to drive results and manage others through observation, coaching, conferencing, and teaching of adult learners. Leaders expand their knowledge of effective teaching practices through the study of current research and video observation of KIPP teachers. Participants also deliver and receive feedback on their teaching of adult learners.

• TheDNAProject: An opportunity for a small group of leaders who wish to share case studies of ongoing issues in their leadership and receive concrete and focused feedback and support from peers. Jon Saphier (author of The Skillful Teacher and founder of Research for Better Teaching) facilitates. Meetings include spontaneous role-plays to help individual leaders rehearse how to handle particular situations.

Programming changes regularly to meet the needs of KIPP leaders. If you have suggestions for future Principal Development Programs, please contact Caleb Dolan at [email protected].

The desire to learn and grow does not stop once a KSLP participant becomes a school leader; on the contrary, the hunger for continued development and professional dialogue is heightened by the complex, demanding nature of the role. As such, the Principal Development Programs have been specifically designed to support the ongoing development of our school leaders by:

• Increasing personal connection to the broader KIPP school leader community in order to facilitate greater openness and sharing of struggle and progress

• Building the capacity to improve teaching and learning at their schools through expanding leaders’ knowledge and skills

• Grounding all programs in high-quality adult instruction and the real challenges of school leadership

Leadership coaching, rooted in the KIPP Leadership Competency Model, is an integral component of the KIPP School Leadership Programs. The coaching program, designed for emerging and seasoned leaders, offers participants one-on-one coaching to develop the transformational skills and talents necessary for the urgent work they are engaged in: to ensure that our students succeed in college and in life.

Whoiseligibleforcoaching?Miles Family Fellows, Fisher Fellows, and Principal Prep participants are assigned to coaches during their training year as part of their leadership development. Current school leaders, regional leaders, and executive directors may opt into the coaching program for a fee.

HowdoestheCoachingProgramwork?Through consultation with each participant, the Director of Coaching matches him or her with a coach who has mastery of the particular areas of identified needs. Participants and coaches engage in biweekly, 50-minute coaching calls that are confidential and non-evaluative. In addition, coaches offer resources, targeted to individual participants’ needs. For leaders who opt into the coaching program, site visits are an additional component.

HowdoescoachingworkatKSLPSummerInstitute? Each participant is carefully matched with a Leadership Guide with whom she or he meets regularly throughout the Summer Institute to identify and address areas of leadership development, reflect on learning, and set goals and action plans to implement during the upcoming school year. Leadership Guides are experienced and practicing school leaders, executive directors, and educational leaders.

PARTICIPANT REFLECTIONS Coaching calls were an amazing and rewarding aspect of the Miles Family Fellowship; a way to reflect, ask questions, and dig deep as I developed as a leader. What I found most wonderful was that my coach was able to help me work through any situation and relate it back to my own leadership development and the KIPP School Leadership Competency Model. In this way, the coaching calls were individualized and specific to my needs. I truly looked forward to each call, because every conversation led to new insights. Miles Family Fellow

Working with my coach over the past year has proven to be invaluable to me. To have an impartial ear, a thoughtful mind, and a caring spirit whose primary job is to help me help my team succeed is a gift. Leadership can be lonely, and having someone to share the struggles with helps. KIPP Regional Executive Director

The KSLP team shares a passion for ensuring that children in underserved communities persist to and through college. With many members having been former school leaders themselves, the team is inspired by the potential to multiply their impact by developing leaders who will each transform the educational and life opportunities of thousands of children.

Recognizing the urgency of the work, the team is committed to designing programs that are truly relevant and highly effective. By continuously soliciting and incorporating feedback from participants and other stakeholders, the team aims to ensure that all programming is of exceptional quality and provides a model for adult learning experiences.
