HQ/15/14 Global TB Programme

Scientist The WHO End TB Strategy approved by the World Health Assembly in May 2014 aims to end the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic with the targets of a 90% reduction of TB mortality and a 80% decline in TB incidence by 2030. The strategy relies on three fundamental pillars: (1) Integrated, patient centered care and prevention; (2) Bold policies and supportive systems; and (3) Intensified research and innovation. To achieve the targets of the WHO End TB Strategy, there is a need for intensified research to deliver new tools and interventions, linked with relevant epidemiological, health system and operational research. It is expected that, over the next decade, low and middle income countries with substantial TB burden progressively enhance their investment in TB research through the creation of a strong domestic research capacity. For this, WHO will provide assistance to high-TB burden countries to develop and implement a national plan for TB research, using a standard purposely-developed ‘tool-kit’. The proposed work will entail providing technical assistance to countries for the development of a country-specific TB research strategic plan that will be conducive to a high impact on TB burden. Lessons learned will be shared with other countries setting out their End TB planning and action. Supervisor: Team Leader, Research for TB Elimination
