Overnight stays in Non-Hotel Tourist Accommodation increase 6.2% in October, as compared with the same month of 2009

Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (holiday dwellings, campsites and rural tourism establishments) exceeded 6.2 million in October, 6.2% more than in the same month of 2009. This increase is produced by resident travellers whose interannual rate stood at 5.4%, and also by non-resident travellers with a variation of 6.6%.

The average stay decreased 1.8%, as compared with October 2009, standing at 5.3 overnight stays per traveller.

During the first 10 months of the year, overnight stays increased 1.5%, as compared with the same period the previous year.

Holiday dwellings offered 431,491 bedplaces, 3.0% less than in October 2009. This month, 32.1% of the total available bedplaces were occupied, 8.7% more in the interannual rate. The weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces stood at 33.8%, with an increase of 7.4%. In turn, 47.7% of the total available holiday dwellings were occupied, for an interannual increase of 10.0%.

Non-resident overnight stays in holiday dwellings represented 81.9% of the total. The United Kingdom was the main country of origin, with more than 1.3 million overnight stays, 0.6% more than in October last year. The following country of origin was Germany, with 748,110 overnight stays, 0.9% more.

Canarias was the preferred holiday dwelling destination, with 2.2 million overnight stays, 0.5% more than in October 2009. The second destination of choice was Illes Balears, with 650,983 overnight stays, 12.5% more.

Among non-residents, Canarias, Illes Balears and Andalucía were the main destinations of choice. In turn, the destinations with the most overnight stays by resident travellers were Canarias, Cataluña and Andalucía.

Comunidad de Madrid showed the highest occupancy rate, with 73.8% of the available holiday dwellings. It was followed by Canarias (57.9%) and País Vasco (51.3).

By tourist area, the island of Gran Canaria was the preferred destination, with 743,177 overnight stays. The island of Fuerteventura reached the greatest occupancy, with 66.3% of the available holiday dwellings.

The tourist sites with the greatest number of overnight stays were San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Arona and Tías.

Holiday Dwelling Price Index Evolution

The Holiday Dwelling Price Index registered a decrease of 0.5% in October, a rate 1.9 points higher than that recorded the previous month.

The rate for Tour-operators and travel agencies, which carried the greatest weight in the weighting structure for this month (55.5%), registered an increase of 0.1% as compared with the same month the previous year.

By modality, 2/4-bedplace holiday dwellings, whose weighting was 63.4%, decreased their prices by 0.6%.

Tourist Campsites

Tourist campsites exceeded 1.2 million overnight stays in the month of October, indicating an interannual increase of 7.3%. Overnight stays of resident travellers increased 1.4%, and those of non-resident travellers increased 12.3%.

Tourist campsites offered 385,907 bedplaces, 3.3% more than in October 2009. 33.1% of the available lots were occupied, 3.7% more. The weekend occupancy rate by lot reached 34.6%, with an interannual increase of 4.8%.

57.3% of overnight stays on tourist campsites were by non-residents. The United Kingdom was the main country of origin, with 31.6% of the overnight stays by non-residents (4.6% more than in October 2009). The following country of origin was Germany.

Comunitat Valenciana was the preferred destination for camping, with more than 397,924 overnight stays, 8.6% less. Cataluña was the second destination of choice, with 385,456 overnight stays, indicating an interannual increase of 13.7%.

Among residents, the preferred destinations were Cataluña, Comunitat Valenciana and Andalucía. In turn, the destinations with the most overnight stays by non-resident travellers were Comunitat Valenciana, Cataluña and Andalucía.

La Rioja reached the highest occupancy rate on campsites, with 62.5% of the available lots occupied. It was followed by Comunitat Valenciana (51.0%) and Comunidad de Madrid (46.9%).

By tourist area, Costa Blanca was the preferred destination for camping, with 230,546 overnight stays and an occupancy of 60.8% of the available holiday dwellings.

The tourist sites with the most overnight stays in September were Benidorm, Cartagena and Oliva.

Tourist Campsite Price Index Evolution

The Tourist Campsite Price Index experienced an interannual drop of 1.1% in October. The normal rate, which had the greatest weight in the weighting structure for this month (54.8%), presented a decrease of 3.1%.

Regarding category, second class, with a weighting of 55.4% this month, registered an interannual decrease of 1.6%.

Rural Tourism Accommodation Overnight stays in rural tourism accommodation reached 685,178 in October, indicating an interannual increase of 8.7%. Resident overnight stays increased 9.0%, whereas those by non-residents grew 7.0%.

Rural tourism accommodation offered 134,819 bedplaces, 3.5% more than in October 2009. 16.3% of these bedplaces were occupied, representing a 4.9% increase. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 29.1%, that is, 4.8% less in the interannual rate.

Castilla y León was the preferred destination in rural tourism accommodation, with 150,707 overnight stays, 5.0% more than in October 2009. It was followed by Cataluña, with 73,384 overnight stays, 2.1% more.

Among non-residents, Illes Balears was the preferred destination. In turn, the destinations with the most overnight stays by residents were Castilla y León, Cataluña and Principado de Asturias.

Illes Balears reached the highest occupancy rate, with 40.7% of the available bedplaces. It was followed by Comunidad Foral de Navarra (25.8%) and La Rioja (21.8%).

By tourist area, the island of Mallorca was the main destination, with 44,977 overnight stays in October and an occupancy of 42.8%.

Rural Tourism Accommodation Price Index Evolution

The Rural Tourism Accommodation Price Index experienced an interannual decrease of 1.8% in October.

The weekend rate, which carried the greatest weight in the weighting structure for this month (67.5%), fell 1.9%. By rent modality, complete use, whose weighting was 65.4%, registered an interannual decrease of 1.5% in October.

Annex Evolution of travellers and overnight stays in all Spanish collective

tourist accommodation

Overnight stays in Spanish collective tourist accommodation (hotels, holiday dwellings, campsites and rural tourism accommodation) registered an interannual increase of 9.1% in October. Overnight stays by residents increased 5.9% and non-resident stays increased 11.1%.

In October the average stay stood at the same values as one year ago, standing at 3.4 nights per traveller.

Travellers and overnight stays in collective tourist accommodation were:

Of the total overnight stays in collective tourist accommodation in the month of October, 79% were accounted for at hotels, and 21% were at non-hotel tourist accommodation.

The main countries of origin in overall regulated tourist accommodation were Germany (with 28.0% of the total number of non-resident overnight stays), the United Kingdom (27.9%) and France (5.9%).

Canarias was the preferred destination regarding overall tourist accommodation, with more than 6.7 million overnight stays (11.6% more than in October 2009). It was followed by Illes Balears, with almost five million overnight stays (7.9% more) and Cataluña, with more than 4.5 million overnight stays (15.0% more).

The preferred destinations of non-residents were Canarias, Illes Balears and Cataluña. In turn, Andalucía, Cataluña and Comunitat Valenciana were the destinations with the most overnight stays by residents.
