Our meeting this month is on Thursday 20th September at 1.45pm in St Marys Parish Hall

when we welcome back Shirley Robinson, from Timperley, who has chosen Nostalgia as

Handbridge Literature Group

After the success of the class last autumn held at URC and Saint Andrews on Thursday

afternoons, John Davies will be returning this September with a new subject - Short Stories

by Famous Women Writers. As usual we will read one story per week then discuss it in

class. John will bring poems and extracts relevant to the theme and will give background

information about the writers. The mid-afternoon tea break is another chance for the

exchange of ideas. The course begins on Thursday 20th September from 2-4pm and lasts

New retail park at Saltney

FLINTSHIRE County Council has approved plans for a retail park in River Lane where the

existing Go Outdoors store is. There will be ve retail units which the council hopes will

breathe new life into the area.

Raft race rescheduled

THE rescheduled Chester Raft Race will now take place on Sunday 23rd September after

IN THE NEWS

CRIMEFILECRIMES reported to the police in this area recently include the following:

lColchester Square A large wooden garden gate was stolen.

l Mercer Way - Two laptops, an Ipod, TV & silver mountain bike were stolen after thieves

broke in through the conservatory.

l Greensway A thief left empty handed after failing to get into the house via the garage.

l Telford Way A grey Marin and silver Viking road bikes, which were chained together,

were stolen from the front garden.

l Ash Grove A Narwhal rib speed boat and its trailer were taken from the driveway.

Curzon Park ootridge to e replacedTHE footbridge spanning the River Dee between theracecourse and Curzon Park is to be replaced due to its

poor condition.

The footbridge is currently closed while Network Rail

carries out a major repair and refurbishment project to the

railway viaduct.

Cheshire West and Chester Council reached an agreement

with Network Rail for the footbridge to be replaced as part of

the works.

The new cantilevered pedestrian footbridge will be made of

galvanised steel with plastic deck planks to give a durablelow-maintenance structure.

The staircase at the racecourse end will be replaced and

improvements will be carried out at the Curzon Park end.

The footbridge replacement works means the crossing will

now remain closed until December, when the new structure

is expected to be complete.

Local Councillor Neil Sullivan said: Bridge engineers have been working closely with

Network Rail throughout this project and we are delighted to have reached an agreement to

replace the ageing footbridge with a new structure.

Local Councillor Samantha Dixon said: This is a vital access route for walkers and cyclists,saving nearly a mile, and for a walker 20 valuable minutes.

The decision to replace the footbridge means this crossing will be closed for longer than

originally anticipated, but we hope people will agree that the end result will be worth the

wait.

Roof death

A 67-year-old man from Sandycroft died after falling off a roof of a house in Curzon Park. It

is believed that he fell about 18ft while up a ladder on the roof.

September from 2-6pm.

Local policing priorities have been set following engagement with the local community and based on

information fed back at surgeries held with local residents:

The Meadows In previous years due to the warmer weather we have experienced

issues with under age drinking and bbqs on the meadows in particular on weekday

evenings and weekend days. High Visability footpatrol in the area, between the hours of

16.00pm and 21.00pm weekdays and 12.00pm 20.00pm on weekends.

Plans to address the issue

PCSO Jo Pendrey along with her colleagues from the Chester Outer Neighbourhood

Policing Team will be providing high visibility patrols during the summer months. Stop

checks to be made of persons causing any anti social behaviour and youths to be advised

and moved on from these areas.

Priorities

and causing damage to the trees

We did PCSO Pendrey has ensured regular patrols have taken take place within

Edgars Park over previous weeks and there have been no issues. Visits were also made

to the local schools in order to highlight the problems occurring in the Park. Patrols will

WESTMINSTER Park has been presented with a national Green Flag award.The scheme - which recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country - is given

on the basis of the likes of cleanliness, conservation, safety and community involvement.

This is the third time the park has obtained this award following its improvement scheme in

2009/10. Further improvements have seen the provision of a new pavilion for sports clubs,

completed in 2011. Facilities on site include the tennis club, play area, youth facilities, caf,

BMX track, sports pitches, bowling greens, a croquet lawn, car parking, caf and golf course.

The park also has an active friends of group who welcome new members.

Members of the Cheshire West and Chester Councils Greenspace team have worked

closely with park partners, Friends of groups and Streetscene over the last year at the

various sites.The Green Flag Award scheme is organised by the Keep Britain Tidy consortium and is the

benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales.

The scheme, which has been running for 16 years, recognises well-managed, high quality

green spaces across England and Wales. This year 1,424 sites have been judged as

meeting the high standards and awarded with a Green Flag.

Executive Member for Culture and Recreation, Councillor Stuart Parker, said: I am

delighted that eight sites throughout Cheshire West have been awarded this high accolade,

one for the rst time, something I know our Green Space Ofcers have worked hard to

achieve.

SPIDER NAEVI are small, brightred, faintly pulsating lesions (raised

blood spots) with a number oftiny blood vessels radiating fromthem to resemble the legs of aspider. The centre is about 1mmin diameter and the whole lesionincluding the legs is 5mm to10mm across.

They are more common in women.They may develop during pregnancyand also the contraceptive pill can

contribute to the condition.15% - 20%of healthy adults have one or morespider naevi.

Spider naevi most commonly occuron the face, forearms, hands andears.

Spider naevi blanch when pressureis applied and rell again from the

centre outwards when pressure isreleased.

CAMPBELL DE MORGAN SPOTSare benign (non-cancerous) lesionsconsisting of an overgrowth of bloodvessels which are bright cherry red incolour and are found on the skin ofadults. The number of spots usuallyincrease with age and are commonlyfound on the chest, abdomen, arms,legs and neck. Maths whizzkids take bronze and silverYEAR 7 and 8 students from Queens Park High School took part in the UK Junior Mathematical

Challenge. The Challenges are held all over the country and students complete a paper consisting

of 25 questions using their Mathematical skills, logic and problem solving to answer the questions.

Council hopes to reinstate

canoeing sessionsTHE future of a weekly canoeing sessionfor young people is to be reconsidered

following the surge in interest in sport in the

wake of Team GBs tremendous Olympic

success.

Cheshire West and Chester Council

recently announced it was unable to

continue to meet the 18,000 annual cost of

operating the Sunday morning session from

Queens Park High School boathouse.

The decision was taken in light of thenumbers attending the sessions, which

were taken over by the Council from the

former Connexions service in April.

Now, given the renewed interest in sports

currently sweeping the nation, Chief

Executive Steve Robinson has announced

that the authority is to look again at the

decision, which was taken prior to the

Olympics.

Young people who attend the sessionand their families will be invited to explore

alternative ways of securing a long-term

future.

In the meantime, the Council has

committed to run the session until at least

the end of the year.

Mr Robinson said: The decision to no

longer fund the weekly canoeing session

was not taken lightly, but it was entirely for

the right reasons.The number of young people attending

balanced against the cost to the Council, at

a time of severe funding constraints, meant

that the arrangement in its current form was

simply not sustainable.

It is important to note this decision

was taken before the Olympics and the

magnicent success of the Team GB

athletes - including Chester rowers Tom

James and Chris Bartley, gold and silvermedallists respectively.

The Games are inspiring children andyoung people to try out new sports and

activities, with clubs across the country

reporting a surge in interest from potential

new members.

It is against this background that we have

decided to re-visit the situation to see if

there is an alternative way for the canoe

sessions to continue.

The young people involved and their

families will have a key role to play in theseconsiderations and we are very keen to

hear their suggestions.

The authority has already committed to

continue its 6,000 annual subsidy of the

boathouse until at least April 2013 in order

to support other users, which include the

school, the Scouts and the Deva Canoe

Club.

Big Dee Day clean-upPEOPLE who use, live or work near the

River Dee are being asked to pinpoint

stretches of the river bank blighted by

rubbish and debris in preparation for this

years Big Dee Day clean-up.

The annual community event run by

Cheshire West and Chester Council,

Flintshire County Council and the

Environment Agency sees volunteers pull

on their wellies to clear the rubbish that

washes up on the banks of the River.

Preparations have already begun for

the two-day event, which takes place

on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd

September, and this year communities

are being asked to get involved early by

highlighting areas that might need to be

A RECORD entry of 99 A level students at The

Catholic High School, Chester were celebrating

fantastic A level results as they picked up their

results. Out of 280 examination entries, there

was a record 99.6% pass rate, meaning that

just one examination was failed this summer.

Among the best sets of results were Joe

Greaney (pictured right), who scored 3A*

grades and one A and is considering applyingfor Oxford or Cambridge University in the

autumn. Sara Hammond achieved one

A* and two A grades, and will be starting

her Architecture at Manchester University in

September, while head boy Connor Jones

has his passport to Law at Shefeld University

in the form of two A*s and two B grades. Head

girl Magella Burnett has secured her place

at Manchester to study Chinese.

Eighteen years ago Amelia Devine(below)was a miracle baby, born several weeks

premature, and now she is off to join the ranks

of the doctors who saved her. Along with

Lydia Maw, both girls were successful in their

applications for medical school. Amelia will be

studying at Leeds while Lydia is heading for

Cardiff.

sport journalists and gain interview technique experience.
