Did you know that the only miracle that appears in all
four gospels (other than Jesus’ resurrection) is Jesus
multiplying food for the multitudes? Mark and Matthew’s
gospels even have two accounts of this miracle of
overflowing provision.
In each of the gospel accounts, Jesus and the
disciples are faced with thousands of people to feed. The
disciples feel that they don’t have anything to offer the
multitudes besides some loaves and dried fish. However,
Jesus asks them to bring what they have. He gives
thanks, blesses it and the disciples begin to distribute.
On every occasion there is so much provision that it is
overflowing. There are basketfuls of leftovers.
The resounding lesson is always the same; when we
are faithful with what we have in hand, no matter how
insignificant it might seem, God’s provision is complete
and even *overflowing*.
I believe this miracle of multiplication still happens
today. This is an incredibly important
season for our church. This is a time where
each of us is asked to consider making a
financial pledge to the work of
Broadway Christian Church.
Each year we see how dozens of families
at Broadway commit to bringing their
incredibly valuable “loaves and fish” to be
used for the provision of
many. And each year, we see how these
commitments become multiplied alongside
the gifts of others. The provision is so great
that it not only provides for the members of
Broadway, but it overflows into incredible
provision for our broader community both near and far.
In the coming weeks, you’ll be hearing more about
this idea of Overflowing provision and you’ll be asked to
make an annual financial pledge. Your
financial pledge is extremely important as the church
prepares for a new budget year. Please prayerfully
consider your pledge for the coming year.
Pledges are due by May 6, Consecration Sunday.

Overflowing: The Miracle of Multiplication
They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked
up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Matthew 14:20
What a glorious Lent, Holy Week
and Easter! My great thanks to all of
those who helped make it such a
meaningful season. Our church staff
was creative and tireless. Our many
congregational volunteers put in
hours of preparation. Our efforts
brought real inspiration to so many.
Thank you!
I will be joining a delegation from our Mid-America
Region to visit the Intituto de Estudios e Investigacion
Intercultural in Chiapas, Mexico April 17-26. Our
mission partner, Elena Huegel, is on staff of the
Institute and will be our host. We will visit the
ministries taking place in this southernmost state of
Mexico, just north of Guatemala. Elena formerly
served in Chile at the Shalom Center and developed
programs to help heal the trauma of war and violence.
She has replicated her Hope and Healing workshops
and now presents them in many Latin and Central
American countries.
At the same time that our delegation is in Chiapas
the Regional Assembly of the Christian Church in Mid-
America will be meeting in Hannibal. Technology
permitting, we plan to bring greetings to the Assembly
live from Mexico. Terry Overfelt, John and Linda
Poehlmann, Susie Mathern and Cinda
Eichler are representing Broadway at the
Assembly.
This post-Easter season is also the time
we set aside for making our financial
commitments for the coming 2018/19
church year. We have many generous
stewards in our congregation. Their giving
allows us to pursue Broadway’s mission. If you
already pledge to Broadway - thank you, and please
continue. If you give regularly but choose not to
pledge - thank you, we need you. If you give
anonymously through the offering plate - thank you,
may God continue to grow your stewardship. And if
you have not yet begun the journey of Christian giving,
please consider doing so this year. Your giving will
support the mission of the church, but will also grow
your faith. Start simple. How about the value of one
meal out each week?
We will all receive a letter and pledge card from
our stewardship team soon. Please return your
commitment to the church by our consecration day on
May 6.

Habitat Sale
April 7 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
April Luncheon
April 23 at Noon
At a recent Mission and
Outreach Ministry (MOM) team
meeting, Broadway member Judi
Schoonover made a brief
presentation about the Columbia
Public Schools Early Childhood
Learning Center. Judi is a retired kindergarten teacher
who now works part-time at the Center. Her stories of
young children and families served at the Center were
compelling—and moved MOM to action!
In the short term, we will collect age-appropriate
books, toys and classroom supplies from donations
made to the Habitat Sale. Our First Sunday for Food
donations received on April 1 will also be given to the
Center for its emergency food pantry.
However, MOM decided to make a long-term
commitment to the Early Learning Center by becoming
a Columbia Public Schools Partner in Education. This
new outreach partnership can be as simple as
donating books from the Habitat Sale, to a more
intentional involvement in weekly, or even daily, school
activities.
The Early Learning Center serves children,
between the ages of 3-5. Each child is screened for
learning readiness, and the Center provides services
at no charge to the family if a child is shown to need
services. There is a special education preschool
classroom, as well as special instruction of
preschoolers with hearing impairment.
Children who have a learning deficit can also be
enrolled in classes designed to enhance their
language, learning and literacy. Children who test
above the threshold for preschool classes may choose
to enroll as Peer Mentors. These children do not
receive free tuition, which is $80 per month, making it
a challenge for low income families
to enroll a child.
MOM has been discussing
ways that Broadway members
could become a part of this new
outreach, and will be making those
ideas available in the next few months. As with
anything that MOM is involved in, there is an idea for a
shared Community Garden, with helpers from the
preschool and Lang Middle School. We will continue
to collect food donations for the school’s food pantry.
And here are a few things to think about as we sketch
out what Broadway’s involvement will be.
Would you like to read to a classroom?
Can you help with special activities?
Would you like to search garage sales for
preschool books?
Can you coordinate a fall coat and glove drive for
preschoolers?
These are just a few of the ideas that are percolating
in the minds of MOM team members. If you have ideas
of your own, please share them with us. Contact Don
Day, [email protected], or Debby in the church office,
[email protected]. The MOM team wants
this new outreach to include all of us at Broadway,
because the opportunities to serve are just that great!

Mission trips are typically thought of as a
week-long endurance marathon, involving
strenuous physical labor, lots of dirt and
sweat—helping people who cannot help
themselves.
A mission trip to El Salvador may involve
some physically challenging labor, and you
might get dirty—but your week there will not
be defined by the heat and hard work. Your
week in El Salvador will be remembered for
the time spent working alongside people
who can out-work anyone on their best day; by sharing
worship led in a language you don’t always understand,
but don’t have to know the words to know the feeling; and
for the bonds that will form within the mission team itself.
Our next El Salvador mission trip will
take place from June 30-July 7, 2018.
The team will likely build Eco-Stoves in
rural El Salvador, providing a more
efficient, safer and healthier method for
indoor cooking.
The cost for the mission trip will be
the round trip air fare for each participant,
which will be around $800-$900, with
Broadway’s Mission and Outreach
Ministry providing the majority of the
funds needed for expenses while in El Salvador. The
deadline for signing up for the trip is April 15.
Please contact Debby Graham, 445.5312, or Jim
Granneman, 823.4409, for more information about the trip.

C A L E N D A R On April 30 from 10am-
noon a group of ministry
professionals from the
Columbia area will be
meeting at Broadway to
discuss ideas about
integrating people affected
by disabilities in church. This
group was founded by Laura
Huntley, the director of All
God's Children at Broadway.
We invite anyone who has
participated in All God's
Children (parents,
participants, committee members, volunteers) to attend. Please
also spread the word to folks in other churches trying to integrate
those with disabilities. We are hoping to collaborate with
surrounding churches to increase inclusion, better serve families,
equip our volunteers, and share encouragement.
Please accept a hearty "thank you" to all members of Broadway
for your continued support of All God's Children.
The attached picture is from our first meeting on January 29th,

How often do you hear of a church family member
who is having a health crisis or a loss or even a special
event in their lives. And you think to
yourself, "I want to sent them a card
or call them or take them some
flowers or maybe a casserole." And
then life steps in, you get side tracked
and you just can't get it done.
That's what CareLink is all
about. Our 10 volunteer CareLink
ministries make sure that church
family members who have needs
during health crises or losses of loved
ones or maybe just need some
special attention, will be cared for.
Here's how it works. If our
ministers know of someone who faces
health challenges or needs a boost, they let CareLink
know. We also hear of these needs through other
church members. Then we contact the families who
need special care with: ♥ Flowers; ♥ Cards;
♥Casseroles; ♥Handy Helpers; ♥ Bereavement;
♥ Meals; ♥ Prayer Shawls or Huggie Buddies; ♥ Spirited
Singers; ♥ Care Center Visits; ♥ Calls of Concern; or,
♥ Caregiver's Support.
We deliver these CareLink ministries as
representatives of all of us at Broadway Christian Church
so that the recipients know that their church is right there
with them through these challenging
times.
That's what being church family is all
about. And any time that you can
become a CareLink volunteer in any or
several of the CareLink ministries, you
can be part of this service.
Sure, we feature the numbers in the
box on this page, but what we really do
is provide the Christian love we all hope
for when we need it most. So join us!
We got mail!
Dear members of CareLink,
Wishing all of you a blessed Easter. Thank you for
thinking of me and others who are not well or hurting. I
appreciate your thoughts.

We say it every year—Broadway is blessed with an
abundance of faithful, talented and creative youth and
a dedicated group of adults who serve as their leaders

another example of creative
teamwork, from our Puppet
Ministry, musicians and
worship leaders. Well done
to all!

Yes, it’s time! Broadway’s
2018 Vacation Bible School
planning began this week
(actually before that!), and dates
are set for July 23-26, from 8:30
a.m.-Noon. This year, our VBS
planners are creating an original
curriculum with a Habitat for
Humanity theme!
Broadway’s Habitat VBS is open to children ages
4 through those entering sixth grade. Older children
will once again have a special “pull out” program,
with special activities and adventures just for them!
Registration brochures will be available at the
end of April. A registration fee of $25 per child, or a
family-friendly $50 fee for all participants, will include
a Habitat t-shirt. Scholarship assistance is available.
If your child has not been able to participate in
VBS due to work schedules, there will be a new
offering this year to ease the
time crunch for working
parents. An after-VBS
childcare option will be made
available on a first-come, first-
served basis. Numbers of
available spots are still to be
determined, but this option will
be administered by experience
and professional staff, and run much like the after-
school Adventure Club program provided by
Columbia Public Schools. There will be an
additional fee for the after-VBS childcare, which that
information available in the registration brochure.
The VBS Drama Team will begin rehearsals June
18-22. Contact Terry Overfelt at 445.5312 or

information.
