Overall IdeaWe are interested in an assessment process.

Trying to take a clinical view of software engineering, and deliver personalized systems.

We want to try out different solutions with an individual and see which is the best fit.

We will focus on navigation assistance in the form of a phone app that will guide a person on a route.

We will study two assessment types: field and virtual.

Hope To Show This

If unusable in field, then unusable in VEIf not better in field, then not better in VEIf dislike in field, then dislike in VE

And vice versa!

Why do we care?

What if eye doctor had to take you around town to try different glasses to see how they worked for you?

Basic Tasks

Task 1. Come up with app to assess, and how to assess it. Quantitative would be best, e.g., how fast, how many mistakes, etc. Set the study up to answer the question.Task 2. Build the app to be assessed. Pilot test as much as you can before actual study begins.Task 3. Recruit subjects. Will be used in both conditions.Task 4. Run the study in the field, get results.Task 5. Set up the VE to “replicate” the assessment. Pilot to fine-tune.Task 6. Run the study in the VE (using same subjects), get results.Task 7. Compare results for each individual in the field and in the VE. Similar results?

Default Assessment

Want to help someone navigate on a specific route. Assume need walking directions. We need to choose a mode to deliver navigation directions. Choices are:

1. Text2. Graphics3. Audio4. Vibration5. Mix and Match

Looking At Graphicsa. Mapb. Point of View (POV)c. Aeriald. Image Enhancements

Simplest Would Be Audio!

What To Measure

ijhcs.pdf is a good place to start. Seecourse web page.

Has scripts for researcher.

Has “score” sheet to give a quantitative rating.

Back To The Study

Assume doing Audio directions:1.Choose route that is easy to get to.

For instance, on EmX line.2.Generate audio prompts for decision

points.3.Add reminders that play audio at

right GPS coordinates.4.Set-up and run the study.

What To Do in VE1. Choose equivalent route. 2. Generate audio prompts for decision

points.3. Add reminders that play audio at

right GPS coordinates.4. Set up the Virtual Environment on

the route and linked to phone.5. Run the study using same set-up as

PE.

Key Task is 4.

Doing The Project As a Group1. Divide into 2 groups of 3, group1

and group2. 2. Group1 responsible for running

PE trial. Includes Android app.3. Group2 responsible for running

VE trial. Includes VE development.4. Class makes decisions about general

study: problem, mode, routes, measurement.

Android app use in both trials!
