Welcome to Berlin!7th International Conference on Wearable Micro and Nano
Technologies for Personalized Health
Berlin, Germany, May 26 – 28, 2010
2 3
Dear pHealth attendees,
The international conference on wearable, micro and nano technologies for personalised health is the mirror of current and future emerging technologies and innovation which are expected to revolutionise personalised healthcare and well being. This conference proposes for the last seven years a unique concept event regrouping technology push and application driven research, development and innovation. It was initiated in 2003 by the European Commission, Information Society Technologies program, to support R&D and industrial community in its great effort to address major shift paradigms in healthcare such as „from hospital to person centred healthcare“ and „from therapy to prevention and early diagnosis“ through personal health management systems e.g. wearable and point of care systems. Along the different editions, the conference succeeded to attract world R&D and innovation leaders, promoting progress in cutting-edge research, disseminating information and facilitating cross-fertilisation and collaboration. It openly provided awareness to users, stimulated the relevant communities, health providers and other stakeholders and build up acquaintance with multidisciplinary concepts, technologies and methods.
Technologies and systems have significantly progressed through these years even though great challenges still remain to be addressed e.g. miniaturisation, system integration, interfacing with tissues and cells, energy and multiparametric data management are also critical steps to reach the market.
Micro, nano and bio technologies will change the way health care is organised, thus altering the cost base for healthcare and will diminish the boundaries between medical and pharmaceutical practice, between home care and test laboratories. Therefore, non-technological issues e.g. manufacturing and industrialization, robust standards, liability, regulation & ethical concerns, validation in real-size trials are even more challenging and require much more time and shift of thinking and attitude.
Wearable micro and nano technologies for pHealth 2010 is about „change“, considering state-of-the- art in technologies and systems but also their usefulness and relevance, with active participation of health professionals, and economic analysis and perspectives.
Welcome to Berlin!
Dr. Andreas Lymberis European Commission, Information Society and Media Directorate General Micro & Nanosystems
Dear pHealth attendees,
The pHealth conference has emerged as the leading international meeting on wearable micro and nano technologies for personalized medicine. Starting in 2004, pHealth has attracted scientists for various technologies, medical doctors, policy makers from the healthcare industry, hospital adminis-tration and allied professionals.
Collecting a dynamic professional community from Europe and all over the world pHealth has given visibility to the tremendous potential of micro- and nano-technologies not only for the future of medi-cine, but also for the improvement of healthcare processes today.
Microsystems, smart textiles, telemedicine, smart implants and sensor-controlled medical devices have become important enablers for monitoring and treatment in both inpatient and outpatient care. This is, however, just the beginning of revolutionary changes and significant opportunities are given for patients, companies and the healthcare industry.
The multilateral benefits of pHealth technologies for all three stake-holders lead to a triple win situ-ation with enormous potential, not only for medical quality improvement and industrial competitive-ness, but also for managing healthcare cost.
pHealth 2010 has a diverse scientific programme with contributions from Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. The conference will have more than 115 oral and poster presentations, features 5 mini-symposia on focus topics and an exiting exhibition.
The newly advertised pHealth Innovation Award will reward the best presentation of the conference, selected by the committee.
We would like to thank our sponsors and organizing partners for their contribution to make pHealth 2010 possible.
Welcome to Berlin!

The pHealth Conference has emerged as a leading venue for researchers of all specialites to assemble and present latest innovations that fuel the further progress of medicine and healthcare.
Therefore the pHealth Committee has decided to reward the best presentation of the conference with the newly advertised pHealth Innovation Award. The best presentation will be selected by the committee based on evaluation by the session chairpersons and the award will be presented at the end of the conference.
The award is endowed with EUR 500.- and an award certificate.
As part of its commitment to support medical innovation, novineon Healthcare Technology Partners GmbHGmbH, Tübingen, Germany has agreed to fund the pHealth Innovation award in 2010 and further until 2014.
