A leader

Created in 1985, the Québec Metallurgy Centre (formerly CIFM) is a collegiate center of technological transfer affiliated with the Trois-Rivières College. Our focus is to support the technological development of Québec-based manufacturing companies in the metallurgical sector. CMQ provides an incomparable knowledge base on metallic and ceramic materials as well as on metallurgical processes.

The mission at CMQ is to become the reference in metallurgy in Québec by enhancing its activities in Canada and securing colla-borations worldwide. With this goal in mind, CMQ has acquired a 15,000 ft2 facility in the Trois-Rivières Haute-Forges Industrial Park to house a laboratory and pilot plant with state-to-the-art equipment unique to both Québec and Canada.

An exciting addition to the CMQ is the newly created division in metal forming: the Advanced Alloys Technology Centre.

Our Exp

ertiseThe CMQ team is composed of technicians, researchers,

engineers, and educators. The Centre currently has labo-

ratories in numerical modeling, metallography (Clemex

and Buehler image analysis), chemical analysis (multi-base

spectrometry), mechanical testing (charpy, hardness,

creep, fatigue, and tensile testing), non-destructive

analysis (X-ray, ultrasound, magnetic, liquid penetrant

and Eddy current testing), as well as the following

-high-performance equipment:

➠ Induction furnaces (100 and 500 lbs) and liquid argon protection system

➠ 300 ton capacity Buhler die casting press for aluminum alloys ➊

➠ Kurtz low-pressure permanent mould casting apparatus ➋

➠ Consarc vacuum induction furnace for titanium, zirconium, and nickel alloys ➌

➠ Hot isostatic press system ➍

➠ Heat-treating furnaces

➠ Moulding, cleaning, welding, and finishing equipment

➠ Pacific Kiln nitrogen dewaxing system ➎

Over the last few years, CMQ has considerably expanded and increased its client base, achieving more than 400 projects per year in a wide range of metallurgical applications such as foundry, hot and cold metal forming, heat treating, welding, plasma deposition, powder injection moulding, and laser cutting, to name a few.

In the research and development sector, CMQ continues to invest in its own ongoing projects while promoting technological collaborations with industry in such notable far-reaching endeavours as:

➠ Magnesium Technology Center start-up, 2005 (CFI Project)

➠ Magnesium Twin-Roll casting technology with Canadian and US partners

➠ Partnership with a SME in low pressure permanent mould casting

➠ Advanced Alloys Technology Centre start-up, 2009 (MDEIE Project)

➠ Knowledge base development in titanium alloy forming, 2008 (MDEIE Project)

➠ Forming process development for titanium, zirconium, nickel, and stainless steel alloys in partnership with 4 SMEs (ICC-NSERC Project)

➠ Technological partnerships in titanium alloy R&D for medical applications with Université Laval, École Polytechnique de Montréal, École de Technologie Supérieure de Montréal, and the Industrial Materials Institute (NRC)

CMQ recognition is further supported by its implication in the metallurgy industry with the bi-annual presentation of technical papers at national and international conventions and scientific congresses. In this regard, CMQ has already earned several distinctions:

➠ The ADRIQ partnership prize with Alphacasting Inc., Hydro-Québec, and École Polytechnique de Montréal for its participation in the start-up of the first titanium foundry in Canada (2003)

➠ The ARC and Hydro-Québec prize for its contribution to technologi-cal research, with its project entitled: Low Pressure Moulding of High Integrity Magnesium Parts (2008)

➠ Best Paper Award at the CASTEXPO International Trade Show for the best technical paper (Metallurgy, magnesium division) (2009)
