Mahalo to those who came out to the OHANA Waikiki East Blood Drive September 15 and special thanks to our four, first-time donors! We collected 17 pints of blood that could potentially save the lives of 51 Hawai‘i patients! I asked a couple of our repeat donors why they take the time to donate blood: Myra Kuboyama said she donates because she knows it’s helping someone and that feels good. Jojo Cabulera shared that her husband and grandpa have been on the receiving end of generous blood donations as has she. She said even though she sometimes gets deferred because of small veins, she still tries to donate because she knows first-hand that it saves lives. Show you care—contact the Blood Bank or attend our next drive to give the precious gift of life!

Housekeepers HonoredBy the Saturday Briefing Staff

In the last two issues of Saturday Briefing, we featured International Housekeepers Week celebrations. On Pages 3-5 are more ways our ‘ohana recognized and celebrated with our Housekeepers, the Heart & Soul of our business.

Outrigger’s Kaua‘i Resorts Hold a Twofold CelebrationBy Vicki Valenciano

On Sept. 18 and in conjunction with International Housekeepers Week, we bid a fond aloha to Lenora Astero, Outrigger Waipouli Beach Resort’s very first retiree! Nora finished her last shift after eight years as a unit attendant. She was one of our first employees hired for the opening team when the resort opened its doors in 2006 and since that time, she has worked hard caring for our units, keeping our guests and owners happy and supporting her fellow team members. Nora often joked about being “grandma” to many of her co-workers and enjoyed any chance she had to share her life experiences. Aside from her years traveling the world working for a Saudi Arabian princess, she considers her time

with Outrigger Waipouli Beach Resort as her proudest and most enjoyable years. She now looks forward to splitting her retirement years between Kaua‘i and the Philippines enjoying her family and her home country. It was heart-warming to hear her parting words, ”I love you all and will be seeing you again.” We had the perfect opportunity to honor Nora as she was surrounded by her Housekeeping ‘ohana in celebration of Housekeepers Week. Our Outrigger Waipouli and Lae nani resorts’ Housekeeping team enjoyed an oceanfront picnic with fun games, good food and great camaraderie. What a wonderful way to say mahalo to our hardworking ‘ohana and aloha to Nora.

“Fun, Fashion, Family and Where We’re From!”By Nā Alaka‘i Teri Takahashi and Taryn Wong

Lights, Camera, Action! Our Housekeeping luncheon kicked off in true fashion with a Cultural Fashion Show featuring staff from different departments and different backgrounds outfitted from head to toe in their respective culture’s attire. “We wanted to make this a really fun event celebrating the hard work of our Housekeepers as well as all the different cultures that define who we are and where we come from at The Holiday Inn® Waikiki Beachcomber Resort (OBC),” said General Manager Simeon Miranda. The celebration began with OBC Accountant Conchita Matsumoto blessing the traditional fare prepared by many of our Housekeeping staff. “Designers” and staff took their seats with VIPs in attendance including designers Dr. Chuck Kelley - “Prada,” Barry Wallace – “Fendi,” Charlene Goo - “Gucci,” Chuck Shishido - “Versace,” and Alan White - “Balenciaga.” The energy was up and so was the music! Justine Cheung and Natalie Caceres started things off by highlighting the partnerships of two brands – Outrigger and Holiday Inn Resort. Justine sported the Holiday Inn Resort Brand of Who We Are (paddle 1) in her purple and green signature colors representing one of 34 resorts in the Americas, a top performer among our brand and the only IHG Holiday Inn Resort in the state of Hawai‘i. Natalie represented our management company Outrigger Resorts with her signature teal and brown colors and showing off our foundation of genuine Hawaiian hospitality or where we come from (paddle 2) – Outrigger Resorts. The fun continued with the rest of our models who shared with us “where they come from.” Debbie from our executive office modeled a beautiful contemporary ensemble made from an antique Japanese kimono. Sleeves were decorated with Japanese cranes also known as Tsuru. She represented the Niigata region of Japan. Island boy Brandon from Accounting wore his Hawaiian flag surf shorts, an authentic Aloha shirt and kukui nut lei with paddle in hand. Brandon was ready to hit the beach representing Hanapēpē, Kaua‘i. Taryn, our island girl also known as Kealani, which means “white heaven,” wore a casual pink Polynesian dress shaking her ‘ulī ‘ulī. She represented the beautiful “laid back” Hilo, Hawai‘i. Traditional Korean Hanbok dresses were worn by Hyang Suk and Linda from Housekeeping. The dresses are normally worn for semi-formal and formal traditional festivals and celebration. Hyang Suk and Linda represented Seoul, Korea. Although Linda is Chinese, she wanted to celebrate with her Korean friend. That’s what you call ‘ohana! Xorda from Housekeeping walked fearlessly down the catwalk sporting her Mahlong, a “tube dress” made of hand-woven colored cotton cloth. In hand she had a made-up “kris,” a Filipino dagger ready to defend her homeland. She represented the Mindanao region of the Philippines. Continuing the Filipino tradition, we had Evelyn from Housekeeping wearing her Filipiniana outfit made out of pineapple leaves. She represented the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Wearing a beautiful contemporary Filipiniana ethnic dress was Nina from Housekeeping. She represented the Ilocano region of Ewa Beach. Ms. Philippines, Maribel from Housekeeping, modeled her beautiful pageant dress. She represented the Ilocano region of Salt Lake.

We had a farmer in the house! Daniel from our Front Office strode on down in typical farmer attire wearing a T-shirt, shorts, straw hat and a basket on his back, one of our guestroom rubbish cans! He represented Ilocos Norte in the Philippines. Ready to ring in the Chinese New Year was Alicia from Housekeeping and Lee Ann from our Front Office. They both wore semi-formal Chong Som dresses, worn at semi-formal parties. They represented the country of China. Keiichi represented his homeland of Yokohama, Japan, by wearing a traditional summer kimono called a Yukata. He gave us a little show by dancing as if he were at a Bon dance. Arigato, Keiichi! Doing a “Victor Victoria” impression was Virgil from Housekeeping and he “worked” that catwalk. Virgil dressed half in Barong and half in Filipina dress – with one shoe stiletto; in the Philippines, this is known as a Doble Kara. Every fashion show ends with a wedding dress and we did not hold back. Lynn from Housekeeping modeled a beautiful white beaded bridal gown representing many cultures. What better way to end our fabulous fashion show than with fashionistas Emelda and Ferdinand Marcos! Oops, I meant to say fearless leaders, Executive Housekeeper Virgi and GM Simeon. Virgi wore an elegant, sophisticated Filipina dress and Simeon wore a modern Barong made with fine white linen and hand-stitched embroidery. Thank you to all of our models for an awesome show representing where we come from. A special mahalo to our wonderful Housekeeping staff who shared their International Housekeepers celebration with the entire staff at the Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber Resort.

Where We’re From ... << From 4 ‘Bows Get Outrigger Support in DenverBy Kelly Smallwood

The University of Hawai‘i Warriors recently made a trip to Colorado to play the Colorado Buffs. Outrigger is a proud partner of the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Warriors and members of our Global Contact Center (GCC) in Denver, Colorado, were honored to join the Outrigger pregame tailgate tradition. The GCC had a great time hosting an Outrigger table for a few hours before the game promoting Outrigger special rates for University of Hawai‘i friends and family (GOBOWS); passing out flyers; and sharing information about Outrigger Resorts. We also had fun passing out Outrigger branded goodies. The University of Hawai‘i and Colorado University fans enjoyed a competitive game with the CU Buffaloes edging out the UH Warriors 21-12. The Global Contact Center team is proud to be on #teamOutrigger!

Aussie Media Savour Delicious MauritiusBy Frederic Chretien

You know you’re onto a good thing when two out of three journalists visiting your beachfront resort choose to extend their stays and that’s exactly what happened when Outrigger Mauritius Resort and Spa hosted its inaugural Australian group media familiarisation, Sept. 17-21. Attending the famil and hosted by Outrigger Mauritius Resorts and Spa - with flights, transfers and land activity support by Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) - were author and freelance writer for the Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age, Brigid Delaney who will soon take up a new role as features editor at the Guardian’s Australian office; news editor of New Idea Magazine, Keeley Henderson; and deputy editor of Signature Luxury Travel & Lifestyle Magazine, Amelia Hungerford. The journalists were treated to many gastronomic delights and island tours to showcase the sheer diversity and offerings of Mauritius. Outrigger Mauritius Resort and Spa captivated them at every turn with beautiful service, warm Mauritian smiles, stunning beachfront accommodation, spa treatments and oh-so superb cuisine. Outrigger was also honoured to have the full support of travel and tour operator, Solis Indian Ocean and their fantastic tour guide and host, Vicky Boodhoo. His understanding of Mauritian history was deep, passionate, informative and delivered with loads of smiles and humour. The group enjoyed an incredible wine and cheese tasting evening in Rouben’s Wine Cellar surrounded by hundreds of wines and champagnes from around the world. The imported French cheeses were matched with wines and ranged from delicate creamy Coulommiers (Brie) to the soft washed Livarot, enjoyed in France since the 12th century. A beachfront dinner at Edgewater Beach Bar & Grill featuring menu selections from Willie’s Rum and Crab Shack was a big winner and featured the biggest prawns the group had ever seen! The following two days were spent gliding through the warm turquoise waters along the west coast of Mauritius aboard a catamaran, visiting local and natural attractions and indulging in massage treatments at Navasana Day Spa at Outrigger. Another highlight of the dining experiences at Outrigger was dinner at the Plantation Club where guests were escorted by buggy to a beautifully fitted out bar and dining retreat serving the finest French/Mauritius cuisine prepared by Executive Sous Chef Geert-Jan Vaartjes and Plantation Club Chef Sadien Sundaravelan. The restaurant also hosts special tea tastings and features a well-stocked library of tea accoutrements for guests to learn more of Mauritius’ pioneering tea industry dating to the 17th century. Rum and sugar production also feature heavily in Mauritius’ agricultural and manufacturing industry and the group toured the Sugar Museum and Factory followed by a beautiful lunch of freshly caught fish, crispy salads and divine desserts. After visiting many wonderful natural and man-made attractions around the island, the famil concluded with some poolside fun, cocktails and grape-infused sheesha pipes (water pipes). On behalf of Outrigger Mauritius Resort and Spa, thank you to the wonderful staff that looked after the media group so well with special thanks to Geraldine Bajee for putting the program

together and Corina Ammann for bringing over representatives from some of Australia’s most prestigious media organisations. The valuable support from MTPA and Solis also ensured that Mauritius left an indelible mark in their minds.

Laulau, Slack Key, Pā‘ū Riders and Aloha, Outrigger StyleBy Nancy Daniels

Aloha Festivals is a wonderful time of year in Hawai‘i and Outrigger is always pleased to help spread the unique history and traditions of our island culture through special activities and events at our various properties. This year the Outrigger ‘ohana celebrated Aloha Festivals with a host of lively events, including an afternoon Hawaiian lū‘au luncheon and show, appearances by the Aloha Festivals Royal Court culminating in a special ho‘okupu presentation, and a parade viewing stand for guests and VIPs.

Aloha Festivals Lū‘au at Kani Ka Pila Grille and Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach

Kani Ka Pila Grille celebrated Aloha Festivals with a lū‘au on Saturday, Sept. 20. Guests, kama‘āina and employees enjoyed the opening ceremony with the Aloha Festivals Royal Court making a special appearance, an all-you-can-eat Hawaiian buffet and the best Hawaiian music by “Kaiao,” Kani Ka Pila Grille’s 2014 Talent Search winner; “Ho‘okena,” Kani Ka Pila Grille’s new Friday night featured band; and Mark Yamanaka, 2014 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Male Vocalist of the year. Excitement grew as everyone at the lū‘au waited to hear their name called for the grand prize to win a 2-night stay at the Reef and $100 certificate for Kani Ka Pila Grille. And the winner was Lisa Akana, an Outrigger Pacific Business Connection client! Outrigger Reef’s guests also had another opportunity to take photos with the Aloha Festivals Royal Court on Friday, Sept. 26, during the Kūpuna Hula Show. Many hands made this an enjoyable event for all. Mahalo to General Manager Dean Nakasone and Director of Sales Robin Estrada for their support; Cherwin Meheula-Solomon and Alohalani Alapa‘i for their hula to the Royal Court; Kani Ka Pila Grille’s staff; Maintenance; Housekeeping; and Front Services; along with KINE Radio’s Alan Yamamoto, Billy V, Brother Wade and Aaron Mikami.

Embassy Suites®-Waikiki Beach Walk® Guests and Team Members at Embassy Suites®-Waikiki Beach Walk® had a front row seat to a traditional Hawaiian ceremony and the chance to meet and greet the Aloha Festivals Royal Court when the group made a special appearance at the hotel on Sept. 19. Executive Housekeeper Carol Lopes danced the hula; the Housekeeping team sang several Hawaiian songs; and some of the hotel’s young guests were given a hula lesson while waiting for the Royal Court’s arrival and performed for the Court as part of the celebration.

Outrigger’s Day of Aloha, Sept. 26 Outrigger was honored to have the Aloha Festivals Royal Court spend almost an entire day visiting our two beachfront resorts and Waikiki Beach Walk®. Outrigger’s Day of Aloha began in the morning with the Royal Court spending time at Waikiki Beach Walk® for photos with visitors. Their next stop was the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort, where members of Hālau Nā Mamo O Pu‘uanahulu, a group made up of Hawai‘i’s treasured senior community, were sharing the gift of hula in the hotel’s front lobby with hotel guests and visitors. The ladies were thrilled to dance for the Aloha Festivals Royal Court. The Royal Court received a similarly warm and respectful greeting at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, where they were greeted by the Outrigger Waikiki ‘ohana and guests with Hawaiian music, hula and gifts of aloha. Outrigger’s Day of Aloha culminated in the afternoon at Waikiki Beach Walk® with an expanded Kū Ha‘aheo show. Normally held every Tuesday, Kū Ha‘aheo was moved to Friday in celebration of Aloha Festivals. In addition to live entertainment provided by Kumu Blaine Kia, Hālau Ka Waikahe Lani Mālie, and the Kekaniwai Hawaiian Serenaders, the program also included a beautiful procession of the Aloha Festivals Royal Court. Members of the Outrigger Enterprises Group ‘ohana gathered to present the Royal Court with gifts, or ho‘okupu, as a sign of honor and respect. Mahalo to everyone who participated in the ho‘okupu ceremony – Simeon Miranda, Natalie Caceres, and Debbie Murakami of the Holiday Inn® Waikiki Beachcomber Resort; Steven Salera of the Wyndham Vacation ownership-Waikiki Beach Walk®; Robert McConnell and Mary Loy of the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort; Pam Yagi, The Hokulani Waikiki by Hilton Grand Vacations; Nora Weatherwax and Karen Villarmia of OHANA Hotels and Resorts; Conchita Malaqui on behalf of Waikiki Beach Walk®; and Luana Maitland for Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Walk. I was privileged to present a ho‘okupu to the Royal Court on behalf of Outrigger’s Company Services. I think Kaipo Ho said it best in an email to participants —Mahalo Nui to all who participated for your commitment to perpetuate our island culture, a long tradition, and living the Outrigger Way – Caring for each other, caring for our guests, and caring for our place with our values as our guide.

TPP Annual Sports DayBy Udom Raheem

Outrigger Phi Phi Island Resort and Spa (TPP) recently held its annual Sports Day. The event kicked off with a parade, followed by an opening ceremony hosted by Chief Operating Officer Ruud Hulscher and General Manager Khun Chao Treenawongse. Again, the “competition” was cleaning up Loh Lana Bay, a public beach near our resort. Since our last cleanup, we have been checking along the beachfront and have noticed a lot of rubbish, so we arranged a major cleanup for what is turning out to be an ongoing TPP community project. Armed with gloves and garbage bags, enthusiastic color-coded teams collected over 100 bags of rubbish, including broken bottles, tire remains and plastic waste. We were successful in thoroughly cleaning up the beach and it felt good, as Loh Lana beach is used by our entire island community. We continue to educate and urge our community to keep our surroundings clean, not only for us and our families, but for our visitors.

Bouzour and Aloha!By Ruthann Yamanaka and Alan Darr

Bouzour! This Mauritian Creole greeting combined with the right palm over the heart with a slight nod of the head and a warm smile are the components of the traditional acknowledgement among Hosts and with guests at the delightful Outrigger Mauritius Resort and Spa (MOR). We had the exceptional opportunity to visit one of our newest additions to Outrigger’s growing global family last month. The Mauritius property is a 5-star, beachfront resort at Bel Ombre on the sunny southwest coast of Mauritius. It features 181 sea-facing rooms, each with stunning sea views or absolute beach frontage, and designed to a contemporary, premium standard featuring a Mauritian feel and atmosphere. We met with many Hosts in 2-1/2 days of Employee Roundtable (ERT) sessions, Outrigger-style—e.g., small groups of Hosts representing a mix of job functions and departments. The genuine and personal spirit of hospitality we experienced with Hosts, including supervisors and managers, was both impressive and heartwarming. Ensame (which means Together) is the Mauritian interpretation of The Outrigger Way, and is growing as a guide for the property today. Employees at the property also composed a special song about the Mauritian values of Ensame. A variety of exceptional F&B venues, four pools, a spa and a variety of sports activities including snorkeling, kayaking, tennis, bocci ball and windsurfing provide extensive options for guests, including families. The main source markets for Outrigger Mauritius are France, Germany and Great Britain, with China, South Africa and Mauritius close behind. A sincere Merci Beaucoup to the Resort for creating a memorable experience–the natural beauty of the place, the gracious hospitality, caring ways and willingness to share thoughts and ideas together are very much appreciated. We look forward to a future trip to this island paradise!

LivingWell is a Lifestyle…By John Wigsten

Ten years ago I didn’t think much about diet, exercise or what it meant to live well. I was busy with my career, young family and enjoying good food and good wine and since I didn’t get sick much, I didn’t think I needed physical check-ups. That year, my family and attended a good friend’s wedding in New York; it was during that trip that I realized my life had to change. While in New York, we did all the Halloween things I enjoyed as a child from costume shopping to pumpkin patch picking to pumpkin carving with my 2-year-old daughter. On one of the last nights of the trip, we checked into the Grand Hyatt New York in The City, so we could enjoy our final days in The Big Apple. That first night, I experienced excruciating pain and ended up calling the hotel Manager On Duty for an ambulance. I am sure I made the MOD logs that evening, as I was wheeled out in a gurney by paramedics through the lobby! After numerous MRIs, CAT scans, bone scans, X-rays, blood tests, morphine and much more, I was diagnosed with a herniated, or slipped, disc. I spent 10 days in the hospital and many more months in physical therapy. I could not carry my young daughter, let alone move without pain. It was at that moment that I decided I needed to change my lifestyle. That was the point that I decided I needed to live well. Nowadays living well has become a way of life. For me that means running up to 50 miles a week, eating less carbs and more vegetables and fruit, learning to manage stress and finding more time to spend with friends and family. Not only do I, at 50, feel the best that I have in my entire life, and have been told by my doctor that at this rate I will live well into my 90s, but I feel it has also made me a better husband, father and professional. By living well, not only am I physically fit, but I also feel mentally fit. I manage stress much better as my long runs help me to release stress and clear the mind.

Living on an island, the physical activity portion is easy to maintain. I go for long and short runs. We recently purchased a paddleboard so my children and I can spend Sundays on the beach or we have family activity where my children bike and my wife and I walk the dog and catch up on life.

Being laid up in a hospital bed made me realize how important it is not to take for granted time to spend with my family. My children have grown in the blink of an eye, and it is important to me that I spend as much time as I possibly can with them so I can enjoy watching them grow and guide them through life. Living well is contagious, and I am proud to carry on the tradition at the Outrigger Guam Resort for a healthier, more active lifestyle. As an executive team, we participated as a group in several of the island’s 5ks and Ekiden relay runs. This has pushed us physically as a team but also allowed us to build a stronger team bond. I am also fortunate as Guam has a very strong running community and I have made some great friends along the way.

Eating well has proven to be more challenging, as access to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables is somewhat limited. As a family we do our best to reduce fried foods, junk food and overindulgence of carbs and refined sugars not only to live well, but also to set a good example for our children. Long ago my wife and I decided that as working parents, one of the most important things we need to provide, aside from a loving home, is healthy home-cooked meals every night. We have been able to do this by having a strong support system living close by. Bad habits are hard to break but once you develop new healthy habits, it becomes second nature to make the decision to run at 5 a.m. or eat a healthy snack like a banana instead of a fresh baked croissant. Good luck to you as you strive to “LiveWell.”

Outrigger’s newly focused brand vision also includes a refreshed corporate look. An updated logo highlights the company’s iconic Outrigger canoe, which evokes a sense of discovery and exploration. The new color palette includes ocean blues, tans and browns that speak to the pristine natural environment where

Outrigger properties are located. And a new advertising and marketing campaign, “Find Out. Find Outrigger,” prominently features Outrigger hosts from around the world. Additionally, our portfolio of distinct resort condominiums in Hawai‘i now will be marketed under the newly established brand, Hawaii Vacation Condos by Outrigger®. Based on research and experience, we have learned that traveler expectations,

the business model, and ownership structures in managing condominiums are complex and different from a hotel product. This new framework positively differentiates our condominium products from our hotels, while also assuring guests that the hospitality that Outrigger is known for extends as well to the condominium product. Through our new strategy, we will continue to demonstrate the entrepreneurial outlook and sound business practices that have driven the successful growth of the company for more than 67 years. Today, our family-owned company continues the legacy of our founders with a global vision for hospitality-based innovation, effective partnerships and a deep respect for culture, tradition and environmental sustainability. I look forward to setting sail on our renewed voyage, always with The Outrigger Way as our approach to positively differentiating us from other hospitality companies – in the past, now and in the future.

Delivering Extraordinary ExperiencesBy Barry Wallace

Last week, we had the honor of “Delivering Extraordinary Experiences” to 200 attendees at the Outrigger Enterprises Hawai‘i and Guam Regional Conference 2014. Beginning bright and early on Monday, 30 of our Hawai‘i and Guam managers attended Outrigger University’s Navigating Leadership Excellence training and after a full day, were able to unwind with the other 170 attendees at the Waikīkī Aquarium Opening Reception where we celebrated the 20th anniversary of Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a – The Outrigger Way. The sweet sounds of Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winners Ho‘okena were the perfect backdrop to the evening while attendees enjoyed ono grinds and mingling. On Tuesday and Wednesday, busses transported attendees to the windward side of the island where the Ko‘olau Ballrooms and Conference Center provided first-class service and breathtaking views while more importantly, “Extraordinary” messages were delivered by our presenters. Dr. Kelley opened the conference by sharing his message that honed in on the need to work effectively together as we take the next steps on our journey. David Carey shared the State of the Company address, after which I had the pleasure of presenting a video on what Delivering Extraordinary Experiences means to both our guests and employees. Keynote Speaker Ka‘ala Souza wowed the audience by challenging everyone to “Think Nui” (Nui means great, big and abundant.) Think Nui, or thinking about how to do things bigger and better, is a great concept to move our company forward over the next 20 years. Some of the other highlights from his keynote address were: • Think Different: The problems of today won’t be fixed by

the solutions of yesterday. We have to recognize and accept that here in Hawai‘i we already think differently than the rest of the world and that is a good thing.

• Think Back: Stay connected to our deep values and history.• Think Ahead: Clarify and communicate the vision.• Think Service: Identify and meet the needs of those around us.

Sean Dee then shared the direction for the new Outrigger Resorts brand which is to establish Outrigger as the premiere beachfront resort brand in the world. He also shared updates from Global Marketing including the renaming of our condominium/timeshare collection to Hawaii Vacation Condos by Outrigger®. Sales and Marketing’s John Limper, Richard Oshiro and Tom Wakita provided an overview of Leisure Sales, the Group Sales Center and Business Transient PBC Sales and the OTA Segment Business Plan. Danny Ojiri provided us with an international update followed by the Revenue team of Elizabeth Cambra, Ian Milley and Jordan Joanou who enlightened us with revenue management “Insight versus Instinct.” Global Distribution was top notch as Dan Wacksman illustrated his team’s digital delivery to our customers with a panel that included Anita Travis, Lisa Tojo, Sheila Bernardo and Sun Wong on-hand to answer any questions. Up-to-date information was provided by Lisa Tojo and Marisa Guerrero on Social Media, and Charlene Goo had everyone intrigued with property stats from Revinate and Market Metrix. The first full day concluded with Bitsy Kelley sharing internal and external Corporate Communications and then getting everyone jazzed about sustainability and getting in the O-zone. On the second day, the franchise properties, represented by Bob Berges, Janice Ng, Misha Maletta, Natalie Caceres, Windy Seguancia and Bob Yeoman, presented their insights on brand standards. They shared with the audience what it takes to Deliver Extraordinary Experiences when marrying the Outrigger brand with their franchise brands. Barbara Campbell then shared some very interesting facts and figures from the Waikīkī Retail portfolio. Charlene Goo, Chuck Shishido and Jasmine Tso got everyone’s attention as they shared the importance of having brand standards and how they will be implemented. Alan Naito and Simon Miranda presented a portion of IHG’s China Ready training followed by a short presentation on the expectations of our Japanese and other international guests by Danny Ojiri. Kaipo Ho engaged our managers asking them to reflect on how our values that were developed 20 years ago are relevant and applicable to Outrigger’s current business strategy. We were then exposed to the upcoming Asia market and how it will impact the islands. Alan Naito, Danny Ojiri and Simeon Miranda shared this message. Kaipo Ho reinforced Our Values: A New Journey, A New Generation on Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a, and Peter Skinner shared beautiful pictures and colors of the new design concepts for our properties. The conference concluded with Delivering Extraordinary Experiences by “paying it forward.” Attendees were split into 20 teams with each team responsible for building a child’s bike, decorating a helmet and creating a personalized card for the bike recipient. Friendly competition ensued as each team tried to outdo their neighbor in quickly building their bike and creating a one-of-a-kind card for their keiki (child). The teams were then

told that their bikes were going to be donated to Keiki O Ka ‘Āina (KOKA), a longtime recipient of Outrigger support. KOKA is a statewide non-profit agency serving more than 4,000 children and parents at more than 40 different sites on O‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i, Moloka‘i and Hawai‘i Island. As each team proudly took pictures in front of their bike, they were surprised by the arrival of 20 special-needs children from Keiki O Ka ‘Āina - the bike recipients. Words are simply inadequate to describe the expressions on the keiki as they discovered that there was a bike with their name on it, just for them. Tears freely flowed as hugs were exchanged—a perfect ending to a perfect conference. The Hawai‘i/Guam Regional Conference would not have been a success without the help of our committee and volunteers. A big Mahalo to: Committee: Barry Wallace, Bob Berges, Chuck Shishido, Danette Bolosan, Debbie Murakami, Kaipo Ho, Kathy Hansberry, Leigh Bulseco, Mari Sawamukai, Nurhan Enustun, Pila Hanson, Reid Yoshida, Robert Ishihara, Ruthann Yamanaka, Shae Gallardo, Sheryl Tsugawa and Will Bethel. The opening of the Islander Hotel in late 1947 was not something that happened overnight. Roy and Estelle, my parents, had been developing and renting apartment units in Waikīkī for over a decade before that. They probably started around 1933 with the rental of a small room in our family home, which was located at the corner of Seaside and Kūhiō avenues in the heart of a then very quiet, sleepy and largely residential neighborhood. Not long afterward, perhaps in 1934 or 1935, they built some two-story, wood-framed units called the Monterey Apartments next door on property leased from Queen Emma Estate. That marked the beginning of the Kelley family tradition of providing “clean, comfortable and affordable accommodations.” (Today, the property formerly occupied by our family home and the Monterey Apartments is incorporated into the Waikiki Trade Center complex and abuts a separate strip known as Duke’s Lane, which is filled with shopping kiosks for almost the entire distance between Kūhiō and Kalākaua avenues.) In 1936, Roy and Estelle completed a 20-unit apartment building called the Town House, located at the corner of Royal Hawaiian and Kūhiō avenues. It was three stories tall, which made it a high-rise in those days. World War II put a halt to all civilian construction. In addition, Roy had lost his eyesight because of cataracts (thanks to the doctors at the Mayo Clinic, he later partially recovered his sight in one eye), and in 1942, our family and many others were evacuated to the West Coast because of the belief that an invasion of the Hawaiian Islands was likely. We returned to Hawai‘i in 1944, and Roy and Estelle almost immediately began building single-story apartment units on another piece of property on Seaside Avenue. Material and labor were hard to find, but with the help of some off-duty Navy Seabees and students from Kamehameha Schools’ manual arts class, several units were completed and the foundation for a larger building next door was laid. As materials and labor became more available, more cottages were completed and a five-story hotel began to rise on the waiting foundation. My colleague Nancy Daniels was able to locate a copy of a bulletin from the Hawaii Visitors Bureau dated October 1947 that said, “The Islander, newest Honolulu hotel, opened last month. Located in the tourist center of Waikiki, the handsome, modern building has 40 rooms and a penthouse. Operated on the European Plan, the hotel, however, offers a snack bar for its guests.” (The “snack bar,” a small kitchen and a couple of tables with chairs, was located in one of the adjacent Islander cottage apartment units.) The December 1947 issue of Paradise of the Pacific, predecessor to HONOLULU Magazine, said, “Manager of the Islander hotel . . . is Gwynne Austin, an experienced hotel man, well-known to thousands of visitors who have come to the islands. Rates (European Plan) are: Guest room for one person: $5 per day and up. Guest room for two persons: $6 per day and up. A ‘budget vacation’ is the specialty of the Islander.” While Roy and Estelle may have rented some of their apartment units out on a daily basis before 1947, I consider the Islander Hotel with its front desk, telephone switchboard, snack bar, hotel brochure and nothing but daily rates as Roy and Estelle’s first stand-alone hotel. Its opening in late September 1947 marked the birth of the company known today as Outrigger Enterprises Group.

I am sure Roy and Estelle would agree, because in an interview for the book Kelleys of the Outrigger, and at other times, Roy always enthusiastically referred to the Islander Hotel as “our first.” So, that brings up the next question I am usually asked, “Do you know the exact date the Islander Hotel opened in 1947?” My answer is, “Roy and Estelle never had an official opening date or opening party that I can remember. During the go-go years from 1950 through the early 1990s, they almost always had a hotel under construction – if not a brand new one, then a major renovation of a property acquired from someone else or a renovation and upgrade of one of our own. Particularly after Hawai‘i became a state in 1959, and the nearly simultaneous advent of jet aircraft and group tours, the demand for hotel rooms grew exponentially. When a guest room in a hotel under construction was “adequately completed” for occupancy, it was usually rented out. “Adequately completed” in the minds of Roy and Estelle, and others of that era, was when the room had electricity, running water and a bed. Doors had usually been installed, but not always. I recall sheets taped to the doorframe in at least one property. Arriving guests often walked through a lobby still under construction, with workmen almost everywhere. I specifically recall that being the case at the Outrigger Waikiki in 1967. Having a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) in hand from the Honolulu Building Department was often overlooked in that era. Later on, the Building Department sometimes gave a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO) on a floor-by-floor basis, which allowed the gradual occupancy of a hotel still under construction. Opening Day Parties, if any, were usually scheduled for several months after the first guests checked in. I don’t remember the details of the opening of the Islander Hotel in 1947. However, I am all but certain it was on a rent-as-rooms-are-available basis. I was 14 years old at the time and would almost certainly remember an “opening party” – at which I would surely have been pressed into service – if there had been one. The establishment of Sept. 29 as our company’s official Founders’ Day is a great idea, and I look forward to honoring Roy and Estelle and the Outrigger legacy they established for many years to come!
