Comparative Studies in Society and CultureThe Comparative Culture course provides students with a rich opportunity to specialize in Asian or Occidental societies and cultures through the fields of language, literature, history, and thought.Course studies include research regarding one, two, or more countries from various perspectives.
Psychology and Health Studies The goal of Psychology and Health Studies is to prepare students in becoming capable of responding to society’s health problems through a multidimensional approach. This course offers classes focused on psychology and sports sciences. In psychology-related classes, focus is placed on mental operations and the dynamics of human relationships at levels of individual, group and society. Sport science classes are offered to provide a better understanding of health and physical fitness from the viewpoint of basic physiology and sociology.
The Faculty searches for effective solutions of contemporary issues by analyzing natural and social phenomena from various per-spectives not restricting itself to traditional disciplinary divisions of human, social and natural sciences. Needed for that search is not a mere collection of frag-mentary pieces of knowledge but the concentration and integra-tion of knowledge from relevant fields. The educational program of the Faculty emphasizes the necessity
of comprehensiveness through-faculty- or department-common subjects and, as the academic years progress, introduces ana-lytical methods of specialties by providing students with courses of specialties to choose from in the second year. This deepening of specialties in broad perspec-tives will equip students with both comprehensiveness and specialty in their disciplines.
Department of Civil and Environment Studies
Public Policy StudiesThis course has four divisions of social sciences: Legal Science, Politics, Economics, and Business Administration. Students are expected to learn basic knowl-edge of these disciplines and to improve their abilities of consid-ering policy-oriented solutions regarding a variety of socilal problems from the international dimension to local dimension.
Faculty of Integrated Arts and SciencesCommunitical and Regional StudiesRegional communities are now facing vari-ous p rob lems in the g loba l i zed age : hollowing-out of domestic industry; widen-ing of economic disparities; rapid aging of the population resulting from the decline in the birthrate; transubstantiated communi-ties; and problems in the information tech-nology age.The aim of Communitical and Regional Stud-ies Course is cultivating students who try to improve and resolve these serious problems with creative ideas and accurate judgments. We consider that the integrated academic knowledge of Humanities and Sciences including information technology skills is indispensable for accomplishing our goals - community renovation and regional devel-opment.
Symbiotic Environmental StudiesOnly by living in harmony with the natural environment in a give and take relation, it is possible for human beings to develop their own life. In the 21st century, society requires talented persons who have a multiple knowl-edge of the earth ecosystems. The course offers basic training in wide areas of biology and chemistry from molecules to systematic levels, allowing the students to have their knowledge and ability in major of biological and environmental sciences.
Department of Mathematical and Material Sciences

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Tokushima was founded in 1922 originally as the Department of Pharmaceuti-cal Technochemistry of the Tokushima Higher Technical School originated. Dr. Nagayoshi Nagai, a native of Tokushima who is world-famous for the discovery of “Ephedrine”, said that one of the directions that pharmaceutical sciences in Japan should take is “innovative creation of new drugs.” in an inauguration address as the first president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan. In order to achieve this objective, Dr. Nagai helped to found Dainippon Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (now Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd.), as a pharmaceutical company for implementation of national policy, and the Department of Pharmaceutical Technochem-istry of the Tokushima Higher Technical School as a suitable educational institution.
With such a history, the Faculty of Pharma-ceutical Sciences has pursued education and research from the special perspective of drug discovery based on a tradition as Japan's only national university pharmaceutical sciences department originating with an engineering background, and boasts a large roster of alumni who have distinguished themselves in industry, academia, and government. This tradition continues to this day with the establishment in 1992 of the Institute for Medicinal Research attached to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. And our department including the Institute for Medicinal Research, Medicinal Herb Garden and Naruto Marine Research Station have continued to perform unique research and education activities for drug discovery.
