•  The PDC is in charge of the validation, calibration, processing of the PLATO observations.

•  The PDC delivers the final PLATO science Data Products to the SOC. •  PSPM provides the scientific specification of algorithms that run at the PDC.

Data Levels •  Telemetry baseline: 109 Gb/day (8.7 Mb/s during daily 3.5hr window)

•  Level 0: Depacketized light curves and centroid curves plus selected imagettes; for each telescope (32 NT@25s + 2 [email protected]). +House keeping data (temps, instrument status, pointing angles)

•  Level 1: Calibrated light curves and centroid curves for each star (science-ready). Instrumental corrections, such as CCD gain corrections and jitter correction. Analysis of imagettes to validate and optimize performance of on-board treatment. FT are used for fine guidance and navigation.

•  Level 2: PLATO science Data Products, processed by the PDC using algorithms specified by the PSPM

Data Policy (baseline from 2011)

•  L1 data will be publicly available by the SOC once they are validated by the SOC, following a procedure to be defined by the PST (days to a few months)

•  L2 data (depend on additional observations) will be made publicly available by the SOC in a timely manner, and no later than the acceptance for publication of the first refereed papers based on them.

•  Baseline: Following a call for proposals, a small number of targets will be exclusively available to the PLATO-involved scientists (i.e. members of the PMC, the PST, and ESA scientists) for a period of one year after the corresponding L1 data have been validated and made available to them by the SOC

•  Issue to be worked out: data policy wrt follow-up observations

Two main PDC processing cycles: Two-weekly cycle. Triggers downlink of the imagettes of cand ida te p lane ts and triggers ground-based follow-up of objects of interest. A full update of the science data products will be made available every three months.

•  Telemetry: 109 Gb per day (3.5 hr per day, each day, 8.7 Mb/S) –  Light curves and centroid curves for all 32 NT and 2 FT –  Imagettes: 6x6 pixels for NT (several 1000) and 9x9 pixels for FT (40) –  House keeping (e.g. temperatures and voltages)

•  Smearing (trailing) – board •  Background (sky background, scatter light) – board •  Confusion (pollution due to the contaminants) – board (masks) •  PSF modeling across the field (using imagettes) – ground •  Differential aberration - board & ground (relativistic effect on star line of sight) •  Outliers (glitches, proton impacts) - board & ground •  Satellite Jitter – ground •  Flux calibration – ground (gain of the electronic chains, quantum efficiency of CDDs)

Data Processing Development Support: WP33 Coordinator is Laurent Gizon (MPSSR)

In collaboration with ESAC (Larry O’Rourke), WP33 turns algorithms from WP32 into core-processing software that will run at the SOC. •  Requires a good understanding of system interfaces with SOC

and operational procedures •  Compliant with ECSS standards for development, product

assurance, management and all the compliant standards

Simulations ? Gaia concept -- 3 kinds of simulators are needed:

One simulating image level data, i.e. raw samples, including detailed instrumental effects and user-defined astrophysical inputs (cf. PLATOSim) à useful to investigate specific issues and validate algorithms on a small scale (i.e. with limited-in-size but quite realistic data)

One simulating telemetry as downloaded from the satellite, with simplified instrumental effects and astrophysical inputs à useful to generate large-volume datasets to be used in end-to-end tests, involving all systems

one simulating intermediate data products as produced by different systems (e.g. PDPCs) or different steps in the data processing. à  Useful for downstream systems, which ended up not participating to the end-to-end tests (due to

the simulated data being too simplistic to trigger them or to delays in the testing schedule).

Calibration of the scientific data, based on the calibration procedure and calibration data provided by the instrument team, for implementation into the L1 processing pipeline Definition of algorithms and support to the implementation of modules to monitor the scientific integrity and health of the observations Definition of algorithms and implementation of modules in the data analysis system for the removal of instrumental effects and generation of L1 data. Previous PDC meetings and telecons: (some notable points)

•  PLATO Algo meeting in Paris (5-6 Nov) (every 3 months in future) •  on-board algorithms to be evaluated early •  discussed interfaces with instrument/payload teams and PSPM •  use of an extended download bandwidth was studied (K band) •  noise budget critically depends on fields chosen (contaminants!)

•  PIC meeting in Padova (21 Nov) •  WP 36/11 meeting in Cambridge (24-25 Nov):

•  Study of stellar activity: How to share the work? •  Overall concept for simulations needed •  Gaia experience is very useful for developing the processing systems •  central repository for all documentation will be needed
