1) Let go of your fear• Natural to fear the unknown• Comfort extends to frequented ponds• Fish are more afraid of you than you are of them• Finding a swimming partner catalysts comfort
2) Safety• Never tread over another swimmer• Never swim alone• Swim in 9°C+, any colder risks your health• Learn competency in a supervised area (ex/ lifeguard)• If unsure, swim parallel to the shoreline• Review all standard swimming safety protocols
3) Materials• Swimming Goggles• Swimming cap• Wetsuit
o Legs are more buoyanto Back is effortlessly arcedo Upper body activityo Slower stronger arm entry/higher arm attack angle
4) Sighting• Sighting gives visual confirmation that you’re on
the right track• Use the largest object visible and mark your
target from that• Safety precaution• Typically every 3-5 strokes
• Insert sighting video
5) Turning• The fastest way to make a tight turn in swimming
is a corkscrew turn• Rotate your body as if spinning and maintain a
frontcrawl stroke with crossover• Allows swimmer to take a 90+ degree bend
without sacrificing speed
• INSERT TURNING VIDEO
6) Racing• Excluding triathlons there are 5 open water swim
races in Newfoundland (see appendix)• Drafting increases speed and saves energy but
sacrifices position
Safety Review
7) Conclusion• Let go of your fear• Safety• Materials• Sighting• Turning
