READINGS FOR
17 January 2021 The Second Sunday
in Ordinary Time
1st Reading: I Samuel III:3b-10,19
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 40
2nd Reading: I Cor. VI: 13c-15a,17-20
Gospel: Saint John I: 35-42
SCRIPTURE REFLECTION “On coming up out of the water He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon Him. And a Voice came from the heavens, ‘You are My beloved Son; with You I am well pleased’” (See Saint Mark 1:7-11). Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. We could also say that we are
celebrating the Feast of our Union with Christ, because by virtue of our Baptism, we have been united with Christ and by virtue of that union we become everything that He is. He is the Son of God and the Son of Mary; we also become children of God and children of Mary, members of God’s Great Family of Faith, His Church. This in turn, places a great responsibility upon all of us. We need to act as children of God. We need to look at others and treat them as what they are—children of God and children of Mary, our brothers and sisters. This may not be easy. Some people will persecute us, others will mistreat us and even betray us, but we need to continue seeing ourselves as members of God’s great family and continue treating them as our brothers and sisters.
JUST IN CASE YOU DO NOT GET TO THE GOOD NEWS IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES
While a spirit of fear (conceived over these past ten months by incessant, dark, “gloom and
doom” COVID19/Coronavirus headlines, stories, and daily news briefings) has resulted (as of
this writing) in a financial loss at Our Holy Redeemer of nearly $225,000, there is reason to
believe that Baptized Catholics amongst us are beginning to dispel that darkness of fear – not
with vaccines – but by the light of faith. Thank you! Let’s keep that Christmas Spirit alive
throughout the New Year!
Now that we have entered into 2021, a look back at 2020 and beyond as Our Holy Redeemer’s
tenth Pastor continues to reveal how the Almighty has done great things for us through the
time, talent, and treasure offered by parishioners and friends to the Church in Freeport! In
addition to what “that Spirit of Generosity” has surfaced in the midst of the pandemic of fear
that continues to affect the lives of many, many, people, that same Spirit has sent our
Christmas 2020 financial offering ($46,326.17) beyond the total offering for Christmas 2019
($38,441.50): a total that as in years past, will continue to increase throughout the Christmas
Season. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Let’s keep that Christmas Spirit alive
throughout 2021!
A look back at the great things the Almighty has done for us over the past twelve years (2008 –
2020) prompts me to ask parishioners and friends of Our Holy Redeemer to consider making a
very small (yet with very BIG results) New Year’s Resolution to increase their/your/our financial
offering to Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport by the 25 Cents More a Week that helped (by God’s
grace) to bring about all of those great things and more!
And Just In Case You Are Not On Twitter (@VeniDomum) “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!" He got into the boat with them and the wind died
down” (Saint Mark VI:50).
In order to get the prevailing winds to die down, Catholics must take courage and be not afraid
to let Jesus into the boat. There is no other way to successfully reach our destination which is
not the Oval Office of the President or any Seat of Government, nor is our goal an Oscar, a
Superbowl ring, or a Grammy. No! Our destination/goal is Heaven.
What does it profit a man to gain all these things and suffer the loss of Heaven? (cf. Saint Mark
VIII:36). Saint Thomas More, pray for us.

BAPTISMS AT OUR HOLY REDEEMER IN FREEPORT Baptisms in English: Second and Fourth Sundays of the Month at 3:00 P.M.
Baptisms in Spanish: Second and Fourth Saturdays of the Month at 12:00 P.M.
NOTES TO BE CONSIDERED ABOUT BAPTISM In the Sacraments of Christian Initiation we are freed from the power of
darkness and joined to Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.
Baptism, the door to Life and to the Kingdom of God, is the first Sacrament of the New Law, which Christ offered to all, that they might have Eternal Life (cf. Saint John III:5).
As for the time of Baptism, the first consideration is the welfare of the child, in that he/she may not be deprived of the benefit of the Sacrament; then the health of the mother must be considered, so that, if at all possible, she too may be present.
If the child is in danger of death, he/she is to be Baptized without delay; this is permitted even when the parents are opposed and even when the infant is the child of non-Catholic parents.
So that proper preparation may be made for the celebration of the Sacrament, as soon as possible, if need be even before the child is born, the parents should be in touch with the Pastor concerning the Baptism.
An infant should be Baptized within the first weeks after birth.
Please call the Parish Pastoral Associate, Mr. Braulio Cacao at (516) 378-0665
to arrange a Baptism.
FAITH AND EDUCATION
NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
We virtually returned from Christmas break on Monday, 04 January the feast day of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Patron Saint of Catholic Schools. A most appropriate day to begin a new school semester. Students will return to the building this week with fifth and seventh grade on Monday and Wednesday and sixth and eighth grade on Tuesday and Thursday. Mid-year exams will begin this week with teachers this year finding creative projects and alternative
avenues for students to demonstrate the knowledge they have secured during the first half of the year. The goal is to determine the students’ power of recall and ability to connect ideas as well as their ability to present their thoughts in a coherent manner. Please keep these young men in your prayers and good luck to our young scholars!
We have begun our recruiting process for next year. Once again we would like to give the parishioners of Our Holy Redeemer the first opportunity to apply. Applications for admission to our fifth-grade in September are available by contacting Mr. Gault at the school by phone (516) 379-8660, via e-mail, [email protected] or by stopping by the office between 7:30 A.M. and 3:45 P.M. on any school day (our entrance is by the flag pole in the parking lot). Our upper grades are full; however, we do anticipate some openings in the sixth-grade class. We usually have waiting lists for seats in our fifth-grade, therefore those interested in applying for membership in our Class of 2025 are encouraged to do so very quickly. The De La Salle School is for young men whose families would like the option of a Catholic school education but cannot afford the choice. If you know of a young man entering fifth or sixth-grade who is interested and would qualify for our school, please have him contact us for an application. Thank you.

CUMULATIVE SHORTFALL: March 2020 through First Week of January 2021
THAT SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY
25 CENTS (AND) MORE A WEEK ..………. IS BACK! 25 Cents More A Week is the financial stewardship endeavour that began in celebration of my one year anniversary as the 10th Pastor of Our Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church in Freeport; which occurred on 25 June 2009. That endeavour, helped to take our parish boldly where very few people at the time, thought we could go!
The Spirit of Generosity that I recognized upon my arrival dwelling within the Mass-goers at the 5:00 P.M. Mass on Saturday, 28 June 2008, whom Michael Crouse told me could really sing, helped us reach our Catholic Ministries Appeal goal for twelve consecutive years.
That Spirit of Generosity has helped us in the last six years repay over $250,000 of the $500,000.00 debt that met me when I arrived on 25 June 2008.
That Spirit of Generosity helped replace both the roof and windows of the Parish Rectory.
That Spirit of Generosity helped replace the windows in the De La School portion of the Our Holy Redeemer School building.
That Spirit of Generosity helped to replace 3/5 of Our Holy Redeemer School building roof.
That Spirit of Generosity helped us replace 95% of the cement sidewalks along Pine Street and South Ocean Avenue.
That Spirit of Generosity helped replace the outdoor lift that takes the elderly and handicapped to the lower church.
That Spirit of Generosity helped install security cameras inside and outside both the Our Holy Redeemer School building and the church, and coupled with an updated and expanded church audio system, helps the sick and homebound and in fact anyone anywhere in the world.
That Spirit of Generosity helped install automatic door openers at the handicapped entrance to the church.
That Spirit of Generosity is helping to build “Our Holy Redeemer School” in Samreboi, Ghana, Africa.
And as we speak, that Spirit of Generosity is helping to pay for the essential work of repair, restoration, replacement, and reopening that has been a sign of hope for people both inside and outside the Church/church in Freeport!
Yes, by the grace of God, 25 Cents (and) More a Week in the Sunday Offertory basket helped to make all of that (and more) happen! So, as you prepare yourself for the coming again of Christmas, and the coming again of Christ, please reacquaint yourself with that Spirit of Generosity, offer 25 Cents (and) More a Week and be assured: the best is yet to come!

¡No!

DONALD J. TRUMP

HUMBLING ONESELF
IS GOD PLEASED
WITH YOU? This is what John the Baptist
proclaimed: “One mightier than
I is coming after me. I am not
worthy to stoop and loosen the
thongs of His sandals. I have
Baptized you with water; He will
Baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
It happened in those days that
Jesus came from Nazareth of
Galilee and was Baptized in the
Jordan by John. On coming up
out of the water He saw the
heavens being torn open and the
Spirit, like a dove, descending
upon Him. And a Voice came from
the heavens, “You are My beloved
Son; with You I am well pleased.”
