WORSHIP ATTENDANCE JULY 8, 2018

When I was serving in Tennessee there was a student in my youth group named Kris. Kris was a big kid. When I met him he was 14 and well over six feet tall. Believe it or not, Kris played football and he was really good. By the time he graduated he was 6’8”, 300lbs, and wore size 17 shoes; he was a tank. He played on the offensive and defensive line and would keep track of how many people he could push right on their back every game. Everybody thought he was going to become a great college player. However, when he got to college he realized he was no longer the biggest guy on the team. In fact, he was smaller than most of the other guys on the team who played his position. Not only were they bigger than him but they were also faster and more skilled. Kris had coasted through high school football on his size alone and in college it wasn’t enough to just be big, you also had to be fast. What Kris lacked was discipline. He spent most of his free time playing video games instead of training to get better at football. He found out that what was enough to get him through high school wasn’t enough when he moved up to the next level.

Recently I have been going through a book called Disciplines of a Godly Man by R. Kent Hughes. Hughes begins his book talking about the importance of discipline in every area of life, especially in our spiritual life. He talks about what he calls “spiritual sweat” meaning, the hard work and discipline necessary for our faith to grow stronger.

I had never thought of the spiritual disciplines in these terms before, but the Apostle Paul had, he writes to Timothy, “train yourself for godli-ness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:7b-8). The word “train” that Paul uses is the root word for our word gymnasium. It carries with it the idea of exercise. We all know that physical exercise is important, especially if we want to get stronger, but do we place the same emphasis on our spiritual training? If we want our faith to grow stronger it is going to take training and disci-pline; spiritual sweat. We can coast through most of life with a moderate amount of faith and it will be enough. We can go to church, pray before meals, be a part

of a small group, and feel like we are doing alright. But what if tragedy strikes? What if a friend or family member begins to question what we believe? What if our faith is tested? Will it be strong enough to bear the weight and remain intact? The only way for our faith to grow stronger is if we are willing to practice disciplines. Reading God’s Word, prayer, fasting, fellowship, memorization, worship, etc. These are the practices that train us and strengthen our faith so that when we face difficulty, our faith is up to the test. Don ’t allow your faith to coast and become stagnate. Put in the sweat now so that your faith will continue to grow stronger. It’s time to hit the gym.

Grace and Peace, Adam

On Sunday morning July 29th, there will be a special get together for the congregation to review the architectural

proposal that McKnight Engineering has developed in response to our ministry needs. We will be suspending our adult

classes that morning and we are asking for everyone to meet in the Connection Café at 9:00 am to hear about the

process that was used to develop the proposal and to see the plans and 3D images of the proposal. Come enjoy a

cup of coffee as we view the possibilities for remodeling our building!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS

CHILD

It’s summertime, time to start thinking

about back to school and Christmas.

Seriously, school supplies are showing

up on store shelves and the sales will

soon start. We will be purchasing sup-

plies throughout the summer and plan-

ning our packing party for October.

This year for Operation Christmas

Child we would like to give you the op-

portunity to donate funds for purchas-

ing supplies rather than buying them

yourselves. Buying in bulk will give us

a price advantage and eliminate collec-

tion baskets in the foyers as well as

making it easier for you to give. Of

course you can still donate supplies if

you prefer and boxes will be available

in the fall for family packing.

Our goal this year is to pack 300 shoe-

boxes which will require about

$2,500.00 for supplies and an addition-

al $2,100.00 in shipping fees and Great-

est Journey lesson materials which

follow the shoebox distribution. I know

this seems like a lot, but if everybody

helps out we can do it!

Starting in July we will have collection

boxes in the foyers for donations or you

can personally give them to Marsha

Williams or Sharon Yochum. If you

have any questions or concerns, we’re

the gals to see.

We look forward to seeing how God will

accomplish great things through this

project and you get to be an important

partner through it all.

SHOEBOXES

Marsha Williams is looking for shoe-

boxes for Operation Christmas Child,

If you have any you would like to do-

nate please drop them off at the Wel-

come Center or by the Church office.

Thanks!

Mike and Tessa Gaines had their baby girl July 5, 2018. Abigail Lee Gaines, she weighed 7 lbs. 11 oz. All are doing well!
