LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England — Brandt Snedeker plays fast and talks even faster, and he was on a roll Friday in the British Open. He raced up the leaderboard with fi ve birdies in a seven-hole stretch, tied the 36-hole record for a ma-jor championship and looked like he was bent on running away from the fi eld at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

Not so fast.Along came Adam Scott, play-

ing cautiously and picking his spots for three birdies on the back nine to pull within one shot. Not far behind was Tiger Woods, sticking to a conservative game plan and delivering a dramatic fi nish by holing out from the bun-ker to set off a wild cheer from 6,000 spectators crammed into the bleachers.

As the second round ended, this Open was just getting started.

On another benign day when the only concern was pools form-ing in the bottom of pot bunkers from overnight rain, Snedeker became the latest player to match the course record at Royal Lytham with a 6-under 64 that gave him a one-shot lead.

He has yet to make a bogey over 36 holes, the fi rst player to go bo-gey-free in the opening two rounds of a major since Woods won at St. Andrews in 2000. Snedeker’s 10-under 130 tied the 36-hole record set by Nick Faldo in 1992 when he won the Open at Muir-fi eld, and it broke by four shots the 36-hole record at Lytham.

Even more amazing? Snedeker hasn’t hit into any of the 206 bun-kers in two days.

“No bogeys around here is get-ting some good breaks and play-ing some pretty good golf,” Sne-deker said. “My mantra all week has been to get the ball on the greens as fast as possible. Once I’m on there, I have a pretty good hand for the speed of the greens. Just going to try and keep doing

LONDON — With the fl ame comes the games.

After years of preparation and months of buildup, London’s Olympic moment fi nally arrived Friday night.

Royal Marine Martyn Williams carried the Olympic torch as he rappelled down from a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter into the Tower of London on the shore of the River Thames. The com-mando’s grand entrance plunged the symbol of the games into the city’s historic heart, bringing Olympic pageantry to the British capital that last held the event in 1948.

Crowds lined the city’s famed river banks to see the torch arrive,

while Yeoman warders — the cer-emonial Tower guards popularly known as Beefeaters — looked on from inside the landmark’s grounds.

For Londoners, the arrival of the torch ignites a time of excite-ment — as well as four weeks of extreme crowds and transport strains.

Organizers have tried to smooth the way. London Un-derground subway lines are fes-tooned with large magenta and pink signs pointing routes to the Olympic venues. Cartoony ads with wide-eyed horses and beefy musclemen warn commuters to remember that Olympic compe-titions are taking place and to re-think their daily journeys. Barri-ers are being erected to mark the

special traffi c lanes for Olympic vehicles — disparagingly dubbed “Zil lanes,” after the limousines granted exclusive use of special lanes on Soviet-era highways.

Londoners who already strug-gle to get to work on any given weekday aren’t convinced all will be well — and haven’t been shy about saying so. The atmosphere of gloom has been segmented by the never-ending rain and a con-stant stream of headlines about the failure of security contractor G4S to provide enough guards.

The mayor has a message for the naysayers: “Put a sock in it.”

Speaking at a ceremony at the Tower of London, Boris Johnson said the arrival of the torch would “dispel any last remaining clouds of dampness and anxiety.”

“It will spread the crackling bushfi re of Olympic enthusi-asm throughout this city and the country,” he said, as Kelly Hol-mes, a British double gold medal winner in 2004, toured the ram-parts of the landmark, with the torch held aloft.

Ready or not, the games are a reality. Olympic banners in hot pink, acid yellow and lime green have painted London in neon. The tubby Cyclops-like mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville, are dancing around central London tourist attractions in a desper-ate bid to be huggable. Dempster allowed four runs in six innings while under heavy scrutiny from several teams looking to make a deal before the trade deadline. The

streak was the majors’ longest since the Phillies’ Cliff Lee had a 34-inning run last year, and it was the Cubs’ longest since Ken Holtzman also had a 33-inning streak in 1969.

Seven straight Cardinals were retired before Holliday’s one-out clout in the third that soared past Big Mac Land in

left fi eld and traveled 4 feet longer than Albert Pujols’ drive over the bleachers behind the visitor’s bullpen in left against the Rockies’ Esmil Rogers last Aug. 14.

According to ESPN Home Run Tracker, Holliday’s homer is tied for the fi fth-longest in the majors this year.

The Cardinals worked Demp-ster for 32 pitches in the third, including a nine-pitch walk by David Freese to load the bases, but came up empty when Ra-fael Furcal broke his bat on a liner to second.

The Cubs lost for the 11th time in their last 15 games in St. Louis.

the cut in three previous trips to the British Open, though this brand of golf is nothing new. As a rookie on the PGA Tour in 2007, he was 10 under through 10 holes on the North Course at Torrey Pines before hav-ing to settle for a 61. He picked up his third win there this year by rallying from a seven-shot defi cit on the last day.

“Brandt is a momentum-type guy, once he gets going and starting making putts and hitting shots,” said Mark Calcavecchia, another player who doesn’t waste time. “He plays quick and he’s got the quick tempo and he putts quick. And they go in quick. That’s awesome golf.”

What does that get him?“A whole lot of nothing,”

Snedeker said. “We’ve got 36 more holes to go. A lot can happen.”

And that was before Scott,

the 32-year-old Australian, began making his steady move up the leaderboard. He bogeyed the third hole for the second straight day, and then turned it around by smashing a 3-wood that bounced off a hillock to the right of the green on the par-5 seventh hole and set up a two-putt birdie. Scott opened the back nine with back-to-back birdies, and then hit two beautiful shots to 8 feet for another birdie on the 18th and a 67.

Thursday, has never been in such good shape at a major going into the weekend.

“Why I’ve played good this week is kind of a cul-mination of everything I’ve done over the last couple of years,” Scott said. “I feel like this is the path I’ve been go-ing down, and just happens to have happened here that I’ve put myself in good posi-tion after two days at a ma-jor.”

Much like Snedeker, though, he didn’t reach much more into it.

“I think you look at the names that are fi ve and six shots back, and it means even less,” he said.

The biggest name was Woods.

Woods mapped out a strategy for navigating the bunkers of Royal Lytham, and not even a change in the weather — only a breath of wind — will take him away from that. He has hit driver only three times this week. On the par-5 11th, where several players hit driver for a chance to go for the green

in two, Woods laid back with an iron. He pulled it into the rough, and it cost him. Woods had to get up-and-down from behind the green for a bogey.

That was his lone mis-take, however. He holed an 18-foot birdie on the 16th hole, and then fooled by what little wind there was on the 18th, recovered by holing out from the green-side bunker with a shot that rolled into the cup for his second straight 67 and a 6-under 134.

Mud daubers, adobe masons of the insect world, bug us with their construction.

Figuratively, it can be a pain when their nests of dried mud show up around and on our homes and outbuildings. Yet they almost never infl ict real pain on us, though they could.

Mud daubers — or dirt daubers in regional vernacular — are soli-tary wasps. That sets them apart in lifestyle from social wasps like the common paper wasps that live clustered in nest colonies.

The multiple species of mud daubers have common features. While they generally resemble other related wasp species, the daubers all have an ultra-skinny, thread-like abdomen tube that holds the front and back of the bug together.

In fl ight, it’s a little diffi cult to tell, but if that needle-thin con-nector in the middle of the bug can be identifi ed, rest assured that it is a dirt dauber species and not some social wasp.

Being able to confi rm a bug as a dirt dauber is assuring. A social wasp well might sting you in a human-bug confrontation. A dirt dauber also packs a stinger, but it is not aggressive toward hu-mans. It can sting, but apparently it won’t unless it is caught and held in hand or it somehow gets trapped in one’s clothing.

Really, you can swat them all day with a bare hand and you sim-ply won’t get stung. You can med-dle with a dirt dauber nest and no dauber will defend the nest nor administer stinging punishment for your transgression.

Three main groups of mud daubers make up the most of their numbers.

Organpipe mud daubers are about three-quarters of an inch long, black with rusty or smoky colored translucent wings. Like their name suggests, they build nests that look a little like organ-pipes, side-by-side tubes up to about eight inches long.

Black-and-yellow mud daub-ers grow to a bit over 1 inch long, although some are half that. They are mostly black of body with smoky wings, but they have bright yellow on their legs. They build nests with shorter tubes, but they plaster over the whole thing with an outside layer of mud that con-ceals the individual tubes. It can look like just a blob of dried dirt.

Blue mud daubers are shiny,

metallic dark blue with blue-black wings. The bugs are about one-half to three-fourths inch long. They don’t initiate their own nests, but rather they take over the nests of black-and-yellow mud daubers. The blues do, however, undertake a bit of remodeling work when necessary to fi nish a pirated nest to their tastes.

Dirt dauber species all visit puddles or the shores of ponds or stream banks — anywhere with moist soil — and gather mud. It is packed back as tiny mud balls, held in the bug’s mandibles and front legs. It goes to a site some-where out of the rain where the mud can be shaped into a nest that will dry hard like virtual ado-be and endure for months.

All the daubers build or occu-py/remodel nests with individual

chambers, each of which gets an egg for a new offspring to hatch and grow in it. A few generations of youngsters are grown each spring-to-fall season. Larva inside the dirt nests at the onset of cold weather actually overwinter in the tubes, then pupate and emerge as new adults in the spring.

Now, while a dirt dauber’s nest might not be especially welcome in your garage, shed or under the eave of your roof, the dauber itself could be an ally. It’s because the enemy of your enemy is a friend.

A female mud dauber lays an egg in a nest tube, but before seal-ing it, she stows food away inside so the youngster that hatches will have nourishment waiting. For food, she fl ies off and catches a spider, paralyzes it with a sting, then brings it back and stores it

alive in the nursery cell.A dauber typically provisions

each nest cell with a few live, paralyzed spiders before sealing it up with the fi nal layer of mud. The spiders aren’t killed because they stay fresher for the coming youngsters by being in a live but dysfunctional state.

Entomologists say black widow spiders commonly are among the arachnids that are stashed as zombie-like, living-dead snacks. Blue mud daubers in particular are said to provision their nests mostly with black widows.

Active dirt dauber nests con-taining eggs or young in some stage of development remain sealed with no openings. A nest with visible holes in it is apt to be an older one from which newly developed adult daubers have emerged.

It’s just remnant dirt stuck on your wall.

If you’re curious about what’s going on inside an active nest — provided you don’t mind sacrifi c-ing a few young daubers — check inside. Use a putty knife and you might get it off largely intact. Break it open, but be prepared for a handful of paralyzed spiders as well as a developing dirt dauber from each chamber.

Having dirt daubers build nests on your stuff may be disagreeable. However, most people fi gure that they’re welcome to all the spiders they can stash.

Bradley Farmer turned in the best pro score during Friday’s play in the Pepsi/Super Valu Irvin Cobb Championships Pro-Am at the Paxton Park Golf Course.

Farmer finished well ahead of the professional field with a 61. Rick Co-chran, Ben Fuqua, Bobby Pavelonis and Kyle Ramey tied for second with 66s. Lucas Cromeenes tied for sixth at 67 with Mark Faulkner, Kyle Hosick, Danny Lewis and John Riegger.

In the Cobb team competition, Cam-eron Carrico’s team won with a 58 while the squads of professionals Farmer, Riegger and Jon Stanley all finished with 59s. The teams of Cochran, Cro-meenes, Fuqua, John Mellendore and Duane Withrow all ended up with 60, which tied for fifth. The groups led by Faulkner, Lewis, Pavelonis, Hunter Ford and Jamie Frazier shot 61s.

Wiggins gets closer to Tour title; teammate Cavendish wins stage

BRIVE-LA-GAILLARDE, France — Brad-ley Wiggins moved closer to a Tour de France victory, keeping the yellow jersey on a day teammate and British coun-tryman Mark Cavendish won the 18th stage.

Wiggins and Cavendish exchanged a long hug after the finish Friday.

Cavendish, largely overshadowed by his Sky teammate, won a stage for the second time on this Tour. He has 22 stage victories for his career — the same number as seven-time champion Lance Armstrong.

The mostly flat ride along four small hills covered 138 miles from Blagnac to Brive-la-Gaillarde, a transitional stage before Saturday’s time trial. The three-

week race ends Sunday in Paris.Wiggins, Cavendish and the Sky team

made it look easy with an almost text-book sprint setup. With less than a mile to go, Wiggins took the head of the pack and chased down six breakaway riders, then peeled away.

The Sky train motored ahead and Cavendish — showing he’s perhaps the world’s most explosive rider — whirred around the remaining escapees in the last several hundred yards and won by a couple of bike lengths.

Luis Leon Sanchez, seeing Cavendish speed by, appeared to sigh with resigna-tion. Cavendish was followed by runner-up Matt Goss of Australia and Peter Sagan of Slovakia in third place.

Titans’ Britt charged with DUIat Fort Campbell Army post

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Officials at Fort Campbell say Tennessee Titan wide re-ceiver Kenny Britt was charged with driv-ing under the influence as he attempted to pass through a security gate at the Army installation on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line.

A statement from the installation’s public affairs office said Britt was taken into custody at about 3:30 a.m. on Friday and later released. Team spokesman Robbie Bohren said in an emailed state-ment that the Titans were aware of the situation and were gathering more facts.

This is Britt’s eighth run-in with police since he was drafted in 2009. He met in August with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who chose not to suspend him over repeated police incidents that oc-curred during the NFL lockout.

Britt injured his knee and played just three games for the Titans last season.

WASHINGTON — Serena Williams is going to rest her back for the Olympics.

Williams won her fi fth Wimbledon title this month and eight days later cap-tured the Bank of the West Classic in California. Olym-pic tennis begins July 28 at Wimbledon.

She said Friday she was pulling out of a World Team Tennis match for the Wash-ington Kastles on Sunday. She’ll be replaced by sister Venus.

Exxon Mobil’s 2QOil giant Exxon

The company produced less oil and natural gas between January and March, a decline that is nearly double what Exxon predicted for all of this year. And it sold natural gas for 31 percent less than a year earlier, a consequence of falling natural gas prices.

behemoth profits for Apple.Sales of the smartphone

accounted for nearly 60 percent of the consumer electronics company’s revenue in the first three months of the year. Three years ago, iPhones made up just 27 percent of Apple’s revenue.

Demand in Asia has been driving much of the growth in iPhone sales over the past year. Wall Street finds out on Tuesday whether the trend continued in the April-June quarter.

Corn’s all-time high

Farm equipment makers: Even with the smaller-than-expected harvests, higher prices will help farmers earn as much as 6 percent more than in 2011, a record year, says Citi financial analyst Timothy Thein. That could fuel more sales for Deere (DE) and others. But JPMorgan’s Ann Duignan is cautious, noting that the drought could hurt farmers’ confidence and lead to fewer purchases.

Fertilizer companies: The high price of corn encourages farmers to squeeze as much as possible from their land. Agrium (AGU), a maker of crop nutrients, has jumped 26 percent since June 1 on expectations for stronger demand — quadruple the S&P 500’s gain.

Meat producers: Companies that sell corn-fed beef, chicken or pork face higher costs. Some producers lock in what they will pay for corn in a process called hedging. But the latest price jump has been so abrupt that it’s likely some are not well protected. That’s why

Janney analyst Jonathan Feeney cut his earnings forecast for Hormel (HRL), the maker of Spam.

Ethanol companies: Ethanol is made from corn and then mixed with gasoline. The industry is already struggling with weaker demand because of the listless economy. Ethanol producer Green Plains Renewable Energy (GPRE) has dropped 40 percent since April.

The price of corn is popping. It hit an all-time high this week, which means far-reaching effects for consumers and investors alike.

Farmers raised hopes for a bountiful harvest by planting 96 million acres of corn this spring, the highest number of acres since 1937. But the worst drought in 25 years has forced the Department of Agriculture to lower its prediction for this year’s harvest — a total 146 bushels per acre, down 12 percent from its forecast just a month earlier.

To be sure, the government doesn’t expect there to be a collapse in supply. This year’s harvest is still expected to be larger than last year’s crop.
